Was sitting out on our small ‘platform deck’ an hour ago, soaking up a bit of rare sunshine, when I looked up to see a Doe 15 feet away, watching ME… ten minutes later, she and another were lying in the snow (40-ft. away), chewing their cuds. My wife has been throwing apples under a large fir tree nearby for them, and they are gradually losing some of their fear of these two old mountain goats.

Its time to abolish Social Security. People need to be responsible for, and in control of their own futures.
Can’t say I agree with this. Social Security is something that is paid into by those working to have a future after they leave the workplace. It is not a freebie by any means except when its giving to those who has never paid into it. However, I do agree that certain individuals should not be allow such as the rich. There should be a cap and American only.
The way it was set up, eas flawed from day one, and what has been done since, is criminal mismsnagement.
There ARE better systems, and sevrral counties, starting with a SS type system like ours, have smoothly transitioned to a better system that does not pit the old against the young, or provide a way for their Governments to raid the fund like corporations do with their pensions..
And of coarse imflation is a major factotmr, as well.
Nobody talks about hoe you put less inflated $, but 30 years later you take out greatly inflated $’s, that the artificially manipulated COLA does not come close to compensating for.
You would have to live, on average to 140 y.o., in order to collect out the $ you put in, and that doesn’t account for the $ devaluation caused by inflation.

Please explain to me how someone was earning a yearly income in the mid $20,000 range in the 1980s and the mid $30,000 range is supposed to save enough money to live on the value of TODAY’S dollar. Today, making $70,000 a year is not enough money to afford a median priced home in most cities ($400,000).
Even if someone saved HALF of their yearly income there is still not enough money to live after what our government has done to wreck our economy and all of the inflation that they have caused. One half of one’s income is unrealistic.
How could anyone know that they needed to save at least a half of a million dollars, have their home paid off, and have no medical issues? How does a person save when the government is doing everything that it can to make it nearly impossible to thrive economically?
Allowing 50 million+ illegals into this country keeps wages down. But it increases competition for jobs, increases home prices, increases food prices, increases medical care, and increases insurance prices. How does an American overcome these obstacles that their own government is putting in their way.
This is why Income Tax should be abolished. If SS is abolished then that saves the earner another 7.65% of their income. Then people might have had a chance at saving some money. But when the government takes 22% plus another 7.65% on a person’s income then they have already left many, many people with very little ability to save for retirement.
Putting illegals onto Social Security has decimated the program. Remember the “Social Security Lockbox”? All of that money has been squandered a thousand times over.

This is a guest post by Mike Hulme, Professor of Human geography at Cambridge University. Mike is one of the world’s most accomplished climate scientists. Hulme participated in the IPCC second and third assessments, was part of the Climatic Research Unit at the University of East Anglia, where he subsequently founded the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research at UEA. He has been at Cambridge University since 2017.
Since first immersing myself in the topic in the 1980s, and subsequently being part of the scientific and public story of climate change in the 1990s and 2000s , I was easily convinced that the growing human influence on the world’s climate would be a reality that all nations would increasingly need to confront, a reality to which their interests would necessarily be subservient and that would be decisive for shaping their development pathways. For more than half of these 40 or so years, it seemed to me self-evident that relations between nations would forcibly be re-shaped by the exigencies of a changing climate.
But now, in the mid-2020s, I can see that I got this the wrong way round. And I can also see why this was so. Rather than geopolitics having to bend to the realities of a changing climate, the opposite has happened. The unyielding force of political realism—the pursuit of the changing and unpredictable interests of nations and great powers—means that the framing, significance, and responses to climate change need continually to adapt to shifting geopolitical realities. Except that too often they haven’t. Whilst the world’s climate has undoubtedly changed over these 40 years, the geopolitics, demography, and culture of the world has changed even more. Too often the language, rhetoric, and campaigning around climate change remains wedded to a world that no longer exists.
Yet by 2007, the illusion under which I had been working—that geopolitics would bend to the force of concern over climate change—was already ending. The Kyoto Protocol, signed in 1997, ratified in 2004, had yielded next to nothing in terms of emissions reductions. Also running out of steam was Tony Blair’s campaign of international climate diplomacy conducted during the years 2003-2005, a self-conscious attempt to harness the moral high ground following the geopolitical disaster of the British Government’s support for the 2003 Iraq war. More significantly, the Global Financial Crisis of 2008 was the prelude to this disillusionment, and the failure of the Waxman-Markey cap-and-trade Bill to pass in the US Senate in the summer of 2009 the main act. And the denouement came in December 2009 at COP15, billed as ‘the most important meeting in human history’. During a few days in a wintery Copenhagen, China’s growing political and economic muscle was firmly exercised, the impotence of the EU’s climate diplomacy revealed, and the limits of late twentieth century internationalism exposed.

How many IQ points do you need to look out over the city and county you were hired to manage and observe lots of combustible materials in places where a truck cannot easily get — or get to at all?
Apparently none of these people also had the IQ points between them to figure out that a public campaign demanding that fire mains not connected to the domestic supply lines and sequential pumping stations to reservoirs up on top of the hills be installed — even where they could be quite cheaply, such as right on the Pacific Coast highway and beach!
Further, none of those three nor anyone else in LA’s alleged “engineering” or public safety departments believed that getting the fuel off the forest floor or forcing the electric company, which enjoys rights of way granted them by said government to remove all trees that could contact power lines, clear the ground under said lines of all combustible material and invest in replacement of aging poles and attachments so when there is a windstorm (1) the lines don’t come down and (2) if that fails there is nothing to ignite.
So now in addition to not having any resources to fight said fires the same public works people refused to mitigate human ignition of fire which is the cause of basically all (>90%) of wildfires in that part of the country! The reason is simple: Dry lightning, which is the natural cause of fire, is extremely rare in that area.
