After putting the context in its correct, horrific and evil place, Mr. Oliver asks the right question, repeatedly, “why now?” Why is this conversation taking place at this specific moment?
Neil knows that when attention is being focused on such a capacity that it makes those who do not want to pay attention, pay attention; it is at that moment when we need to stand back and look around. Whose interests are being served within the “now” question.
Elon Musk could have focused attention on the 500,000 missing, presumed exploited, children in the USA; or he could have drawn attention to the scale and scope of North American human trafficking that dwarfs, only in scale – not depravity, the British rape gangs. However, those American domestic horrors are not the attention-grabbing focus of Musk, why not? Why the ‘look over here’ aspect to the attention. WATCH:

Personally, I always find Oliver’s big picture questions and discussions to be very pertinent. In the subtext to his narration, Oliver alludes to something even more problematic from the world of politics. Something so much more consequential inside the question.
The “why now” is almost certainly because those who want the distraction, needs a story of such consequence (‘child rape gang’) in order to provide cover for the issue advancing, but not being discussed. (1) The total takeover of liberty by an elite group under the guise of digital identity; (2) Artificial Intelligence driven control and surveillance facilitated by the tech industrialists; and (3) the need for war against Iran.

A relative of mine has been saying for years now that he thinks Trump is controlled opposition. I’m beginning to wonder whether that may be true. His call to annex Canada and Greenland is disconcerting, especially since he never mentioned that during his campaign and would not say that he wouldn’t use military force to accomplish those goals. He says it’s necessary for security, but does not explain why. The only reason I can come up with to explain this completely unexpected policy is because he has intelligence that indicates China has concrete plans to take over these countries in order to subjugate the US or something to that effect.

I submit, re Sundance’s commentary on Neil Oliver’s program on the current British child rapes brouhaha, that timing is always one of the questions to be addressed in any serious analysis. And any serious analysis, which usually requires a time line, must admit that there are always more than one possible or even probable reason for the timing of an event (e.g., Musk’s recent intervention on the British child rapes issues). Likewise, one needs an overall framework of analysis that can include a theoretical component. But to mechanically link the Iran problem as Sundance (and many others do) to other issues (e.g., the surveillance state, the use of wars for purposes having nothing to do with their ostensible justification), is what I challenge. Does Sundance deny that the extreme Shi’ite islamist regime in Iran and its clear ambition to acquire nuclear weapons–and the probability that they would use them both for genocide against Israel and against any other perceived enemy of their regime–is a real problem? Is it less of a problem because of the clear drive for a surveillance state both in the USA and Western Europe? The danger of theory and ideology in analysis is that it forces you to edit what you perceive and to fit what you see into their Procrustean bed.

I have an account but left it unused for years after deciding I had had enough noise in my life. Well, something of a rush! Back in the IT milieu after several years. My attention quickly turned to the endless lists of posts that typify that environment. A lotta posts populated my page because over my post-military career I made hundreds of contacts in the IT, specifically cybersecurity, industry; some as a GS, most as a contractor for a major company that provides the “brainpower” for gov’t. I started seeing names I worked with in the 90s, 2000s, 2010s. Very bright people, but not geniuses. All with strengths and failings. All who had moved on to very well paid, upper tier jobs in gov’t; or, more often, started their own businesses and succeeded impressively. All STILL in the IT/CS business after 30 years.
Synthesis/summary of career engagement in one segment of the IT/Cybersecurity (CS) industry of which AI is only one thread:
One. THE IT/CS ECOSYSTEM IS HUGE. Government offices that fund, manage, operate (e.g., CISA, CYBERCOM, NSA, Service CS commands, COCOMS, DISA, various CERTS, literally hundreds, maybe thousands, of others); all the gov’t and Service labs; contractors that perform much off the gov’t program work (e.g., BAH, Leidos, RAND, etc.); contractors that provide infrastructure (e.g., CISCO, Fortinet, Microsoft, Cloudstrike, PAN); contractors that have to integrate IT/CS into their products (e.g., Boeing, Lockheed, Northrup Grumman); the billion and one small support businesses one sees growing like weeds around every military base; the retired gov’t, military, top tier business executives who bring connections and experience to all the Boards of Directors; the service contracts (e.g., communications – a sizable mix of it runs encrypted over public infrastructure); the various media orgs that hire people to establish contacts and report on gov’t IT/CS as dedicated roles; the data colossus that includes many of the Cloud providers (e.g., AWS, Azure and others less well known); the immense subindustry of IT/CS education general (e.g., IP principles), specialized (e.g., hacking embedded software, Cloud security) and certificate oriented (e.g., CISSP); the cross gov’t support teams (e.g., FBI, CIA).
A HUGE, HUGE AMOUNT OF MONEY FUNDING ALL OF THIS. The resistance to anything that attacks the money flow will be immense.
Two. FAMILIAR CAREER PATHS. I ran into hundreds of exceptionally bright people. Geniuses? Far fewer. That’s inevitable as one moves solidly into the bell curve. I can recall working for a period at one major contractor whose 10+ story building had an outer ring on each floor one could walk to relieve stresses from sitting in a seat all day. There were similar buildings in the complex. Two people in every office, on every floor, churning out recommended strategies, crunching numbers, drafting/reviewing proposed CS policies, building complex diagrams to visualize information, writing test plans, etc. An overwhelming generation of product one could make reasonable half-life predictions for given that prevailing IT/CS paradigms changed about once every 6-7 years. Like most large work environments the labor force (while discounting material incentives in private conversations) worked vigorously to promote. Political alliances formed early. A common CS career path was a junior military IT/CS person separating from service or an industrious person in a non-aligned field (e.g., a nurse) acquiring an IT/CS certificate, gaining initial employment and then hopscotching from one IT/CS job to another in the space of 3-4 years achieving very healthy pay increases each step of the way. Many of these folks now run major gov’t CS programs at DHS, NSA , wearing civil service hats. The teaming/political alliance part of this I also witnessed lead to senior gov’t leadership partnering with mid-grade yet savvy CS folks to create new tech companies that then leveraged senior leadership alliances into lucrative sed money for growing their businesses.
A HUGE, HUGE AMOUNT OF POWER AND INCOME IS AT STAKE.
RESISTANCE TO CHANGING THE WEALTH/INCOME DRIVEN SCAFFOLDING IS BUILT VERTICALLY AND HORIZONTALLY INTO THE ENTIRE ECOSYSTEM. THIS RESISTANCE WILL BE FIERCE. THIS RESISTANCE IS GROUND ZERO. IT’S IMPLICIT in THE CLAIM THAT THE HOUSECLEANING WILL REACH ACROSS ENTIRE DEPARTMENTS/AGENCIES NOT JUST SENIOR LEADERSHIP. IT IS ALSO A PRIME MOTIVATOR THAT PROPELS INVESTMENT IN AREAS LIKE AI. IT’S NOT A TECH BROS DRIVEN OUTCOME. IT’S A SYMBIOTIC RELATIONSHIP.
Three. PDJT UNDERSTANDS MOST OF THIS AT A GUT LEVEL ON HIS SECOND RIDE AROUND THE PRESIDENTIAL MERRY-GO-ROUND. Is he going to destabilize the IT/CS ecosystem when his immediate priorities clearly fall into Border Security and Economic Growth (to include wage increases)? I don’t think so. Partly because of cross-cutting interests (employment/unemployment); partly because IT/CS factors in visible/tangible and important ways into day to day gov’t, military and national security operations; partly because he doesn’t have the time and resources. I believe there is a long-term plan in play, one that will adapt as it meets resistance from entrenched interests/resistance. A plan that will focus broadly on Federal civil service across the board at the outset. One that will factor into the initial DOGE efficiency/necessity budget trimming. One that will work top down in terms of leadership appointments and bottom up from hiring/promotion criteria and numbers. Whether or not he wants to place political capital at risk by directly interacting with Congress to advance AI restrictive policies/regulations is open-ended in my mind.
IMO, no one in authority is going to step forward and state “Yup, we’ve heard the clarion call, no AI for America!”.
A viable strategy is going to have to reduce the structures/center-of-gravity that promote internal resistance, intelligently manage the money trough the ecosystem feeds at, control and expedite solutions for the immediate priorities (Border Security, etc.).
I think Sundance’s core fear vis surveillance has merit. The preparatory steps to whatever AI regulatory/policy control (my opinion on how this eventually plays out) will have to perform the difficult weighting our Constitutional gov’t expects when balancing security/safety against privacy and individual rights. Pieces of the policy part are already in place with various data/privacy law and regs – much like border security these need to be expanded and enforced.
Surveillance relies upon monitoring. I frankly do not see, ever, the monitoring piece being reduced – the threat spectrum is just too pervasive and the value of protected assets too high; it’s integral to the whole system (monitor, detect, enforce/respond, restore). I do think multiple guardrails are needed to include privacy aspects of data security, identity (and therefore authentication and access control to data/information ) aspects Sundance focuses on, and independent oversight controls.
The solution is long-term. Performing the stage setting while attending to immediate priorities is where I think PDJT is headed. I would counsel not over-reading into the daily crisis theatre. “We” voted for the man. Let’s figure out first what his gameplan really is before becoming part of the problem.

As I understand it (not a theologian re: Islam): the Pakistani’s are Sunni (not Shiite). Charles has been studying the Koran for years (he was just gifted a quaran stand from the Emir of Qatar, gave the emir a prayer mat, and the king recited verses from the quaran at the state dinner). Qatar and Saudi Arabia are Salafi Islam states. There are some weird undercurrents that Charles is somehow a foreshadowing of the near-arrival of the Mahdi and Jesus.
