In following much of this on X today, I am shocked at the contrast to how this is being reacted to, and how the hurricanes were being reacted to.
A lot of the DEI/leftist incompetence was pointed out on the other thread.
What shocked me was Biden announcing he was ordering the military to deploy and do all they could to assist in the fire. Fine. Their nitwit politicians in CA need bailing out. But it took weeks for the military to deploy in WNC, and it still appeared leaderless after deployment.
The second shocking thing that I didn’t see in the other thread was Biden announcing FEMA grants of $25,000 to those in CA. It is just so disgusting to see him jump so high for his donors there, while those in WNC are being told they need to leave temporary housing, cannot rebuild, still living in tents or vehicles, power is still out in many areas, etc.
Oh, and they were offered $750.
People there are still trying to reach FEMA on the phone, and they refuse to pick up.

Exactly. My family know a local church group that every month has been asking for clothing and other household donations for the people in Western North Carolina. We have given clothes, gift cards et al. The California fires are devastating but FEMA jumping through hoops to help their fellow communist government in Sacramento is revolting given how they basically hung WNC out to dry. And to make matters worse people in WNC whose homes were totally destroyed are getting property tax bills from their local government since it is the first of the year.
Unfortunately, those taxes now due are based on the assessed and taxed valuation as of 1/1/2024….

They can provide additional manpower and equipment. They can drive water tankers and operate heavy equipment and bring in other supporting logistics as needed. All so that firefighters can put more of their efforts in combating the fires.

Also, good thing that there aren’t dedicated ratings for fire fighting – say on military bases. That is the main issue. Integration with local organizations. Yes the Military can support local fire control. But sending a solder out driving a tanker to the corner of Maple and Ash street with nothing to guide him, or communicate, holding nothing but a cell phone and google map is neither a good way to fight a fire or at all safe.
Without integrated communications and training. The military can do nothing but some basic logistics.
It takes time to coordinate, set up communication, and get operating. Without situational awareness, what would happen is ” I’m from the government I’m here to help.”

We had a fire on our property a few years ago. The fire dept had to literally stay there for 2 days because the fire was burning underground and kept igniting again.
Sounds like the underground aquifer had some toxic/flammable material in it. The aquifer near Simi Valley CA contained material from the time Rocketdyne had open burn pits of radioactive materials. Men sloshed around in those pits unprotected and many died from liver cancer. Funny how it was kept very quiet! When the winds in the hills above Simi blew it away, the material went underground and stayed there. I know because I researched it completely when my 39 year old daughter in law died from a monster disease they couldn’t diagnose! Even the very smart doctors at one of LA’s largest research hospitals were stymied.
I can’t help but think of the massive fire in Hollywood as something from the Old Testament. We are watching, in real time, the burning down of Hollywood and all human efforts seem unable to stop it.

A lot of California forests are in National Parks and National Forests. Trump can order them to do forest management. Yosemite and Sequoia-Kings Canyon burn every year because they are stubborn and won’t fix the problem.
The Bureau of Reclamation can build more reservoirs and take the snow melt to fill them up. He can reverse the Fish and Wildlife Service ruling on the fish thing.
He could take away the exemption for windmill farms that allow them to kill thousands of birds every year.
He can take away the Federal exemption that let’s California set it’s own rules on gasoline blends and stuff like that.
He can require all windmills, solar farms, and EV pay up front for the cost of recycling.

Did anyone else catch the brief phone interview on the live TV link I think it was FOX or the ABC affiliate.
The guy said he knows exactly where it started as saw it from afar. He explained it was the size of a Christmas tree then blew and spread very quickly He also said it looked intentionally started as there is no reason for anyone to be in that specific area.
I did not see or listen to that phone interview…but if that eyewitness account is true, and if “the guy” did not see anyone running away from there or moving around or driving away from there, could it have been ignited at that “Christmas tree” spot by a drone ?

I wish that I could say that this is the first time such a disaster has happened to the desert City of Los Angeles. But, it isn’t.
Unfortunately, the State and County will bear part of the blame because of their [lack of …] forest management practices. You need to go into those forests regularly, remove dead trees and deadwood, thin over-crowded sections for usable wood, and conduct periodic controlled burns. This failed to happen because of “environmental reasons.” Well, this is that “environment” talking back, as it naturally(!) will do from time to time. Ferocious fires wipe out everything. Then, it grows back.
Other disasters have also happened. For example, after heavy rains, mud-slides can occur in those mountains which can literally wash a house away. Some are built with concrete dams on the uphill side in an effort to deflect them, but sometimes even those are wiped out.
In places like Palisades, “you get a beautiful view of the City.” But, it comes at a price. You’d better have a packed suitcase in your front hall . . .
“Jim, you and your family made it out.” That’s what matters now. The rest of it is just sticks.
