Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced that his platforms of Facebook, Instagram and Treads are going to change policies to permit free speech to reemerge on the social media networks.
According to the announcement, Zuckerberg admits his tech platforms have gone too far in their effort to control content, and censorship has been the outcome. While providing no apology for the intentional control mechanisms that have created censorship, Zuckerberg notes he has met with Donald Trump and sees a “new opportunity” to reset his social media control to allow free speech to return. Simultaneous to this announcement, Zuckerberg has offered Dana White a position on the board of directors. Apparently, White has accepted. Dana White is a strong supporter of President Trump and the position by Zuckerberg is clearly an effort to open a channel of communication with the Trump administration.

I got off KGBook four years ago, almost to the day, and I doubt I’ll ever be back on. I think we need scorched earth or these people will never learn. I haven’t mentioned Google yet because they’re so tight with the blob, it’s hard to tell where it ends and they begin. I’ve said for a while, relying on Google is like joining a cult – you don’t realize how much they own you until you’re deep.
It’s a really difficult place to be for the average person. There’s so much of society that’s moved to social media that it can be hard to function on some circles, but I think it’s worth the cost to just say no to all of them (Meta, Google, scAmazon, Reddit, etc.). For the average person, abandoning all of big tech will almost immediately make their life better. You don’t have to completely abandon online interaction: you have independent sites, from TCH to traditional webforums on just about any topic, where you tend to find a lot more genuine and uncontrolled interactions with like-minded people than you do on the social media giants – even interacting with strangers versus people you’ve actually met.
So ultimately, while I suppose this is good news, it’s not enough. People like Suckerberg would have to come out like flaming carnivore conservatives before I’d even consider using their platform again, and I think the pent-up distrust combined with the years the blob has had to extend tentacles into their operation is enough that it’s unlikely I ever come back. The internet was better when it was the wild west, even if it was a lot more fragmented; all the giants have done is make life difficult for entrepreneurs and given an over-grown bureaucratic state one-stop shopping to control the flow of information. Why play along?

All promises and commitments of our the Tech Oligarchs to open uncensored communication are hollow deceptions until all the social media companies agree to true open interfaces, governed by a true open, royalty free interchange standard (e.g. OASIS) open to any and all.
If I use the Truth app, a Twitter user would easily be able to subscribe to my posts. If I use Telegram app, I could follow a Twitter thread. etc etc. An app that applies censorship will not then survive in the marketplace.
The standard must also allow portability of data allowing for example a Twitter user to bring their histories and followers over to a new app.
They now collude with government to maintain a fixed set of monopolies. With an industry based on standard open interfaces, apps would have to compete for users based on feature and function, not holding users’ data and their access hostage.
Would you use ATT if it did not let you call a Verizon customer? Would you stay with TMobile if it censored your phone conversations with whoever it chose? Would you keep your email provider if it blocked your emails based on the contents?
Why do we accept it for social media? (Maybe because it’s “free?). Free is not Freedom – free apps and phones worth thousands of dollars might just be making their money elsewhere.
