This has been posted before, but it has become timely for a different reason, which is the fraud becoming more and more rife in our society, such as the H1B and F1 visa fraud, gotten away with by big corporations, because when it is uncovered nobody goes to jail.
The McDonalds ice cream machine conspiracy is actually a crazy true story of white collar crime.
Now, put that “conspiracy” in place in our government and “presto” you get power lines, gas lines, oil lines, telephone lines, plastic everything, cars made in America breaking constantly, high gas, high oil, high chlorine, high food, high car prices, housing out of control, taxes out of control, murders, jail, extortion, blackmail, invaders. Because corporations run our government now, and it’s a free for all grab and go with government as the strong arm to make us obey.
No jail time for anybody connected to government because they own the law enforcement. And not a single clean cop in all of them, not one. The idea is to join police and government to “get away” with crime.
Somebody please make a case why we don’t tear it all down. When our reach now is destroying countries for profit. How is that different from war to take over nations?
Can you imagine if a nation built an energy source that was free? We would destroy them in an instant. Corporations “will” destroy our world not if, and they will do it through our government. We now see Musk taking first stabs.
Our county is falling apart, people can’t afford homes, upkeep etc…. and places like China and Dubai are building whole modern cities. Our government taxing us to death and standing in the way of progress via redtape regulations, etc…. is the problem.
China might be building them, but no one is living in them.
Let’s extend that to where it really matters – health care. There the strategy is a little different – they guilt and pressure everyone into getting physicals and when a test comes in a little “off-spec” from their arbitrary and overly “conservative” benchmarks, the next thing you know you are on a lifetime regimen of pharmaceuticals, have an ill-advised operation, or are undergoing treatments that do more harm than good.

Had a similar experience with Kodak.
Long story short: I worked for my dad who manufactured a time control device for x-ray film processors for hospital applications.
Mainly for emergency rooms where the machines had to remain on at all times.
Kodak made the film processors. We made a small add-on time control device that saved money on electrical use, development fluid use and greatly reduced wear on processor parts.
We had a patent. Kodak decided to “incorporate” our device into their new processors, thereby cutting off our revenue stream. We fought it, however, they had a much bigger war chest and we decided to withdraw the suit.
We also developed silver recovery units to recycle silver from the film/fluid.
Our agreement with hospitals was that we would provide the recovery units for free, but we retained the right to collect all the recovered silver.
The x-ray techs would steal the silver, often by breaking into the locked recovery device.
Needless to say, I went back to college. Finished my engineering degree and never looked back.

Which is, of course, how the whole cloud PAAS/SASS/IAAS business works. Rent, don’t own, with the real advantages of scalability and centralized maintenance amongst others. If 370s had been connected to a modern Internet to timeshare cycles across many many customers, we’d still be writing COBOL.
Believe it or not, @Mouse, plenty of companies still do write, and maintain, COBOL! If you want very precise control and decimal arithmetic, and don’t mind writing “mountains of words” to express what you want the computer to do, then COBOL is very much still out there and still used. (And, the resulting programs are “splendidly fast!” Which you need when facing “mountains of data!”)
The “as a service” models, I think, are now beginning to once again be “on the decline.” If you don’t actually own “the iron,” you do not have full control over your data and who has access to it. Companies are now paying for well-positioned secure space in which to install their own(!) hardware. “AAS” is still out there, but I think that their client-mix is now changing.

You’ll lose your job in a 100B company if you try to go after something as measly as 100M. One of the ways to go after the large entrenched companies is to change the playing field. They always have huge investments in the older tech and large internal bureaucracies that champion them. Bonuses depend on that old tech. Only the very best of them push for internal competition and let the chips fall where they may.
Fortunately, long ago, “Tom Watson, Senior” was smart enough to realize that his son, “Junior,” might actually have been right about: “tabulators and punched cards.” . . . He himself believed that there wasn’t a market for this newfangled thing called: “a computer.” But he stepped back and let his son go with his idea.

McDonald’s sells franchises to entrepreneurs. Those entrepreneurs have to use the equipment and marketing of McDonald’s corporate. They are limited in some of the things they can do as a business owner. Since corporate forces them to use this machine, the franchises are forced to pay for repairs all the time during the tenure of their ownership.
What does that mean? Welllll…. When you own a franchise you have to kick up a decent portion of your profit. McDonald’s, if they have a back door deal with “Taylor” most likely is taking kick backs as the execs gain extra cash from the vendor that fixes the product.
Audit the execs of both companies; and Taylor as a whole, and you will find the kickbacks. Zero chance it’s a corporate reported income generator on Mcd books. This is a money grab by execs.

“Too Big to Care” and the Illusion of Choice

We’ve all heard of Too Big to Fail, a description of the consequences of consolidating capital and power in a few corporate entities, the net result of which is monopolies and cartels becoming so large that their collapse would send the entire economy into a crisis without easy solution, as the void left cannot be filled by competitors because there are no competitors.
Given the risks generated by this consolidation of capital and power in cartels, the federal government and central bank had to bail out these systemically critical corporations in 2008, regardless of the cost or political precedent being established.
One would be forgiven for reckoning that the first thing the federal government would do post-meltdown was break up the Too Big to Fail entities as an unacceptably dangerous source of systemic risk. But the Central State did nothing of the sort, and the dominant firms in every sector of the economy have continued consolidating by snapping up competitors and start-ups and merging with other giants.
Everywhere we look, a few firms dominate each sector–the perfection of state-cartel-capitalism in which the core dynamics of open markets–competition and transparency–have been suffocated as obstacles to expanding profits and power. Eliminating competition and transparency is the unstoppable logic of increasing profits by any means available, for eliminating competition and transparency are the lowest-risk ways to increase profits without bothering to increase productivity or quality.
This consolidation into quasi-monopolies and cartels has moved from too big to fail to too big to care: these companies now occupy the commanding heights of the economy and so they have no incentive to improve quality and durability or seek efficiencies that can be passed on to customers. Rather, they have every incentive to reduce quality and durability to boost profits via planned obsolescence and disregard for customer service.

There is literally no bottom in the too big to care abyss. I’ll share one example from my own life to illustrate this; you will no doubt have your own. The electronics in our crumbling Samsung range (rusting “stainless steel,” etc.) finally failed after a few brief years of service, so we bought a new GE range from Home Depot, largely because this model was in stock.
GE shipped the new range with a defective thermostat that never worked. GE didn’t care, and neither did Home Depot, which carefully refuses any warranty responsibility for the appliances they sell. When we called GE to honor their warranty and send a repair tech, the process was pre-Soviet-collapse painful–hours squandered trying to get a response via phone, online chat, emailing, none of which produced any timely results. We finally reached a staffer who took our address and scheduled a tech visit.
The day of the service call arrived and the tech texted us that he’s on the way–to our address of ten years ago, 2,500 miles away in another state. After more wasted time, the customer service staffer we finally reached said their system was buggy and updating addresses generally failed.
In a functional economy with real competition and transparency, every one of these cartel-corporations would be driven out of business by their too big to care incompetence. Instead, we all move from one form of extortion and indentured shadow work to the next, regardless of sector or whether it is public or private.
We are numbers…not people. Metrics. To be used and abused.
If an investor could find schematics for Kenmore appliances from 1989-1990 and build them they would make more money than they could ever count.

The US Treasury is currently sitting on a $800 billion pile of cash, along with availability of a few hundred billion more owing to one-time intergovernmental borrowing and lending games. However, both of these sources of cash and borrowing to pay Uncle Sam’s bills will be drawn down toward zero at a rapid rate during the first half of 2024 as the UniParty politicians line up in a circle on the banks of the Potomac taking aim and each other and most especially the White House occupant.
And we do mean that what impends is a perilous game of political chicken in the face of a rapidly depleting hoard of cash. To wit, just in the first two months of FY 2025 through November, cumulative spending has come in at $1.253 trillion versus receipts of just $629 billion. The resulting $624 billion of red ink amounted to $10 billion of new borrowing each and every day—including weekends, holidays and adverse weather days.
That’s right. The US Treasury’s current cash burn rate is the real revenge of the UniParty. It insures that whatever the Trump Administration and its DOGE advisors might have had in mind on the fiscal front will be quickly overtaken by the Mother of All Debt Ceiling Crises within months and weeks of the inauguration.
We are about to go belly up. Good GOD.
Yes, the debt is insanely high – as is the interest payment on said debt.
That said, the scenario in that article is written on the assumption that the Treasury won’t be able to sell any more T-bills and that the spending rate will remain at the same level and that the income will do the same.
The bond market IS going nuts and pushing back.
That may be more Yellen (will be soooo glad when that anti-American witch is booted) and a bit of disbelief that PDJT will be able to reign in spending. Some are also waking up to the fact that inflation isn’t yet fully under control and if spending isn’t reigned in, may well take back off. There may also some Euro influence involved.
Did note Friday the rates were falling again with the 10 looking like it may go back under 4 1/2.
