My son works for the Veterans Affairs Department. He probably won’t be too happy to see this chart. (Now I know why they have difficulty finding people to work for them).

According to my DuckDuckGo search engine, there are 18.3 million living veterans in the US today.
So, if the Veterans Affairs Department has 486,522 employees, that means that there is a federal worker for every 37 veterans.
That seems excessive to me.
Even with that ratio try submitting a VA Disability claim and see how fast that process is just for that issue alone. Don’t hold your breath.
And I’m sure the Veterans will wonder where the heck all these workers are- since they are treated so poorly.

So, a reasonable annual fee for each incoming worker on a visa should be at least $50,000, with half going to the state of the business and half to the federal government. Such high minimums would guarantee that work visas only welcome in the truly talented stars that will bring big advances to American society. Instead of a worker replacement program that undercuts Americans, this new system would bring in a very small but super-talented pool of outperformers – and it should replace the entirety of current, confusing worker visa programs.
If these foreign workers are actually essential, then U.S. firms will willingly pay the high fees and salaries!

Notice how all suggestions for reform of H1b, from the article quoted above to Musk, focus on the disparity of $, but the problems inherent in the program are much deeper and more fundamental than than simply a matter of $, can not be solved by increasing the costs of H1b workers, which is why the program must be scrapped, and can not be reformed.
It is the CONDITIONS, specifically that the VISA holder can NOT leave the employer to work for their competition, or if fired seek such employment, but rather has 24 hours to leave the country, that effectively makes them slave laborers who will NOT complain if subjected to unsafe or hostile work environments, demands to work overtime, etc.
H1b must be ended because Lincoln freed the slaves, to put it simply.
IF these workers were really SO essential, ..WHY the prohibition on them changing employers,…?

Simply not true. We are some 100,000 short of engineers as well as physicians and many other areas.
Those who recruit highly qualified employees pay ver high wages with additional fees etc. for permits and legal representation.
Having worked under a similar regime as a US citizen working in Canada the fees and hurdles were quite high and it cost an employer between $25k and $50k for each employee. Likewise now hiring back on this side of the border it is neither easy nor cost efficient to hire an expat vs. a citizen.

I have a family friend who has their MD. Passed the boards and all testing. Did well.
He cannot get into a residency and therefore cannot complete his education. He went back to school to become a PA to work. He also tutors others in medical school so they pass their exams.
We have professors like the one in Berkeley stating 4.0 students have no job offers.
How many don’t bother after hearing stories like these. These are not isolated incidents
People do not understand that unless you complete a Residency you cannot practice medicine. These spots are limited and most are going to Foreign Medical Grads. It is ruining patient care.
Not to mention the medical field is saturated with PA’S and NP’s. I want to see board certified physicians at my appointments. I was done a disservice by a NP masquerading as a doctor.
I can’t tell you how many people I’ve met in my life that have gone back to college later in life, then the field they went into dries up, gets moved to China, things don’t pan out.
They go back to college, get another degree trying to salvage what they can and yet move in another direction and then that doesn’t work out either. Now they are getting older, age and health issues arise, they owe a pile of money and now they can’t get jobs because they are over qualified.
I met a man from Manhattan once sitting on a park bench over in Vermont, we were watching our kids play. He told me he worked in TV in Manhattan, same story. He’s got two degrees and he wound up moving to Vermont, becoming a stay home dad because her career could support them BUT sheesh.. what a depressing story he had. You’d think they’d be doing well and they were barely getting by.
There was no work at all in his field in NYC.

People in their 70s are still paying off college loans on careers that they never even could have..
My aunt has two masters in the medical field and had to spend her entire career traveling to make the money she needed for all that education, now she’s in her 70s and never got to put down roots anywhere.

The purported “driver shortage” has been used by the ATA (American Trucking Association, the lobbying arm of the major carriers) for years, for the sole purpose of ramping up H1B visa numbers.
The truth of the matter is there are literally millions of CDL/A holders who no longer are in the industry, for varying reasons such as low pay, nanny state monitoring of the driver (inward facing cameras in the trucks being the big one) and not being able to get home when they have notified their company requesting the time off.
I’m in the final year or two of my career, and with the state of this industry as as a whole, ill be glad to call it quits. 4,000,000 accident free miles (to date) is about enough.

I once got in an Uber in RSW / Ft Myers, for those in Loma Linda/ it was a minute or two before I realized the driver did not speak English. Thank god my son who was with me spoke Spanish and was able to talk the driver thru getting us to the airport. Very unnerving experience!
Awhile back I took a trip to Key West. We used Uber everywhere we went. We would always ask the driver where they were from. We counted 10 different drivers from 10 different countries. Astounding!
In Northern California a delivery driver told me that he was making $40 an hour several years ago.
Then the company brought in 30 experienced drivers from Columbia, and hus earnings dropped to $30 hour – less gas and car expenses.
Local Door Dash doesn’t even accept applications in local affluent areas – all slots taken. Many drivers only speak Spanish.
The same has happened in nursing…all the good ones are leaving…so stay healthy and out of hospitals if possible.

What is the status of Canada/Mexican truckers being allowed to deliver point to point in the US? In former times they could deliver from foreign to US, but not pick up in US for delivery in US? The Association wanted this changed, did they get their way?

Guess how many of them do and how many of them do not.
I have seen so many trucks here with Mexican plates driving on our roads that were so ramshakle I could not believe they still worked.
Mexico does not obey or care about our laws.
They have never been made to by our progressive elected officials.
They believe America is ripe for their pickings and they are right so far.

The drivers in Canada were friendly as can be and all spoke virtually perfect English.

Interesting point. A few years back I took a job during the holidays driving a truck. Once a week they would seek me out to deliver to Federal facilities where they gave me a security colonoscopy.
Most of the drivers seemed like good guys, but it’s a different culture.
A young, sexy, big woman was brought in to run the warehouse. Loud nails, pretty hair, perfume. Within a few months there was drama as multiple Latino truckers were going to her house for footsies. Not dating. Most of these men were married. (Most Latino men don’t care about size. They’ll chase anything that moves.)

The “shortages” declared by many company owners here in America is nothing new at all.
Fifty years ago some farmers screamed that they were going to goout of business if they were not allowed to employ illegal Mexicans to pick the crops.

Thirty some odd years ago, on an interstate close to me…there was a horrendous accident where a semi truck overturned onto a mini van…I forget the details but it was horrific…a family was decimated. In an unimaginable manner.
At the time, there was some sort of ‘program’ for Eastern European truck drivers to come here in America…and drive trucks…this accident brought to light, the fraud and abuse with that program and how many of those ‘drivers’ were not properly trained or licensed for our American roadways….as I recall, it was mostly Polish and Romanian men.
What was also awful….this was an interstate in a then minimally developed area with light traffic. The info revealed that many of those brought here to drive those big trucks…many were never trained in the CDL type trucking. As was the case of the driver and the accident I speak of…

Australia is a warning to the world on immigration: fixing illegal immigration simply isn’t enough.
Back in 2013, under heavy public pressure, the government brought in ‘Operation Sovereign Borders’, a plan to stop the boats. It was hugely successful and we effectively ended illegal migrant maritime arrivals. The only problem was that while this was happening, the government was also heavily ramping up legal immigration without telling anyone.
Since then, our immigration numbers have exploded out of control.
Last year we brought in 737,000 migrants. 1 in 22 people in the country right now arrived in just the last 3 years.
Today nearly one third of the country is foreign born. Our major cities are nearly 50% foreign born. Towns and cities are changing rapidly. Schools and hospitals overcrowded, traffic is increasingly horrendous.
And legal immigration isn’t just from ’skilled immigration’. Last year, only 13% of migrants were on skilled visas, with ‘skilled’ meaning everything from dancers to hairdressers. The system is farcical.
The rest? Family visas, temporary workers and international students.
Roughly 1 in 27 people (1.1 million) in the country right now is an international student. This has decimated rents and housing costs – hurting the living standards of the young and working class the most.
Out of those 1.1 million, over 400,000 study at ‘training colleges’, which are, in effect, just legal human traffic institutions. Giving work access and pathways to residency to migrants for as low as $12,000 for courses in ‘business administration.’
It’s worth noting here how broken the student system is: foreign students can buy Australian houses.
In many ways, Australia didn’t end illegal immigration, we just made it legal.
And we’re paying for it.
Today, Australian real wages are at 2009 levels, we have some of the most expensive house prices in the world, rents are astronomically high, our fertility rate is plummeting, and families are sleeping in cars. These are all linked.
The ‘lucky country’ we grew up in no longer exists.
If you speak out about it, the state-funded national broadcaster will come after you. Business councils and property lobbyists pour exorbitant amounts of money into pro-immigration propaganda and think tanks. Our major news platform own extensive real estate interests. This is the oligarchy in action.
Even our right leaning political parties fear alienating legal migrant votes, and so do not speak out about it. Our ‘nationalist’ party has elements within it that are pro-mass migration. Nevertheless, research shows that new migrants disproportionately vote left.
In many ways our situation is better than other countries. In other ways, it’s much worse. Mass deportations doesn’t really work when it comes to legal migration.
The Australian people can come back from this, but it’s going to be a multi-decade fight to fix the mess that governments, businesses, and other special interest groups have created.
Right now Australia is at breaking point.
Take this as a warning: don’t just fix illegal immigration and ignore legal immigration. Legal immigration can be just as destructive, if not more so. Trust us.
