NEW YORK (AP) — In a string of visits, dinners, calls, monetary pledges and social media overtures, big tech chiefs — including Apple’s Tim Cook, OpenAI’s Sam Altman, Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg, SoftBank’s Masayoshi Son and Amazon’s Jeff Bezos — have joined a parade of business and world leaders in trying to improve their standing with President-elect Donald Trump before he takes office in January.
“The first term, everybody was fighting me,” Trump said in remarks at Mar-a-Lago. “In this term, everybody wants to be my friend.”
Tech companies and leaders have now poured millions into his inauguration fund, a sharp increase — in most cases — from past pledges to incoming presidents. But what does the tech industry expect to gain out of their renewed relationships with Trump?
During an interview Tuesday, Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff said the incoming Trump administration seems more interested in hearing about issues that are important to the industry than the Biden administration.
“Put all the politics aside, everybody wants to reboot some things,” said Benioff, who stressed he strives to stay nonpartisan because he also owns Time magazine. ”We are just at a very exciting moment, it’s a new chapter for America. I think we should all have our best intentions going forward. I think a lot of people realize there is a lot of incredible people like Elon Musk in the tech industry and in the business community. If you tap the power and expertise of the best in America to make the best of America, that’s a great vision.”
Clearing the way for AI development
A clue to what the industry is looking for came just days before the election when Microsoft executives — who’ve largely tried to show a neutral or bipartisan stance — joined with a close Trump ally, venture capitalist Marc Andreessen, to publish a blog post outlining their approach to artificial intelligence policy.
“Regulation should be implemented only if its benefits outweigh its costs,” said the document signed by Andreessen, his business partner Ben Horowitz, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and the company’s president, Brad Smith.
They also urged the government to back off on any attempt to strengthen copyright laws that would make it harder for companies to use publicly available data to train their AI systems. And they said, “the government should examine its procurement practices to enable more startups to sell technology to the government.”
Trump has pledged to rescind President Joe Biden’s sweeping AI executive order, which sought to protect people’s rights and safety without stifling innovation. He hasn’t specified what he would do in its place, but his campaign said AI development should be “rooted in Free Speech and Human Flourishing.”
Easier energy for data centers
Trump’s choice to head the Interior Department, North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, has spoken openly about the need to boost electricity production to meet increased demand from data centers and artificial intelligence.
“The AI battle affects everything from defense to healthcare to education to productivity as a country,″ Burgum said on Nov. 15, referring to artificial intelligence. “And the AI that’s coming in the next 18 months is going to be revolutionary. So there’s just a sense of urgency and a sense of understanding in the Trump administration″ to address it.
Changing the antitrust discussion
“Maybe Big Tech should buy a copy of ‘The Art of The Deal’ to figure out how to best negotiate with this administration,” suggested Paul Swanson, an antitrust attorney for the law firm Holland & Hart. “I won’t be surprised if they find ways to reach some accommodations and we end up seeing more negotiated resolutions and consent decrees.”
Although federal regulators began cracking down on Google and Facebook during Trump’s first term as president — and flourished under Biden — most experts expect his second administration to ease up on antitrust enforcement and be more receptive to business mergers.
Google may benefit from Trump’s return after he made comments on the campaign trail suggesting a breakup of the company isn’t in the U.S. national interest, after a judge declared its search engine an illegal monopoly. But recent nominations put forward by his transition team have favored those who have been critical of Big Tech companies, suggesting Google won’t be entirely off the hook.
Making amends?
Altman, Amazon and Meta all pledged to donate $1 million each to Trump’s inaugural fund.
Salesforce’s Benioff said Tuesday that he won’t be donating money to the inauguration because of his ties to Time, which named Trump as its “Person of The Year” — a decision that landed picture of the president elect on the magazine’s cover. “I think we just donated that photo,” Benioff said as he chuckled. “He can use the Time magazine cover for free.”
During his first term, Trump criticized Amazon and railed against the political coverage at The Washington Post, which billionaire Bezos owns. Meanwhile, Bezos had criticized some of Trump’s past rhetoric. In 2019, Amazon also argued in a court case that Trump’s bias against the company harmed its chances of winning a $10 billion Pentagon contract.
More recently, Bezos has struck a more conciliatory tone. He recently said at The New York Times’ DealBook Summit in New York that he was “optimistic” about Trump’s second term, while also endorsing president-elect’s plans to cut regulations.
The donation from Meta came just weeks after Zuckerberg met with Trump privately at Mar-a-Lago.
During the 2024 campaign, Zuckerberg did not endorse a candidate for president, but voiced a more positive stance toward Trump. Earlier this year, he praised Trump’s response to his first assassination attempt. Still, Trump in recent months had continued to attack Zuckerberg publicly.

In my opinion: tech is running up against some severe investment roadblocks. Silicon semiconductors are at a nano size limit, and the public has lost its “upgrade now” drive for better desktop computers. Most consumers want mobile, low power, networked devices for casual use, and the iPhone Du Jour upgrades are also losing interest. Cloud turned out to be really expensive for businesses, and many are migrating back to on-prem for cost control. Bitcoin/Ether/Blockchain are fake currencies with no intrinsic value (sorry coinbros), and the coin “markets” are already cornered by big banks who need to recoup their electricity costs (and early coin miners who need to cash out via YOUR cash).
Without AI, there’s no next capital investment driver for these large established companies. And an AI Large Learning Model (LLM) has to be trained on large datasets to work, which exposes the tech cos to legal risk over inclusion of PII and copyrighted material. So the AI proponents NEED the Trump admin to relax these regulations, or AI is going to become 100x harder to train. We already see pushback from the creative community (actors, artists and musicians) on IP rights, and they’re not wrong.
TLDR: the tech companies are only interested in preserving their dominance via relaxations of regulations. We’ve watched this movie before.
Without AI, there’s no next capital investment driver for these large established companies.

The Taliban have banned windows in residential buildings to stop women from being seen while they are at home in Afghanistan.
Hibatullah Akhundzada, the leader of the Taliban, ordered that buildings should not have windows looking into places where a woman could be sitting or standing.
The order applies to both new buildings and existing ones, according to a four-clause decree posted on social media site X (formerly Twitter) late on Saturday.
The decree, posted by government spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid on X, states that new buildings should not have windows where you can see “the courtyard, kitchen, neighbour’s well and other places usually used by women”, AFP reports.
“Seeing women working in kitchens, in courtyards or collecting water from wells can lead to obscene acts.”
Within a month of claiming Kabul, the Taliban’s education ministry banned girls and women from schools. The Taliban leaders also announced that the girls were barred from studying beyond the sixth grade – with the ban extended to colleges and universities in December 2022.

MAGA hardliners may be apoplectic, but President-elect Donald Trump got it spot on when he embraced the kind of visa program used to bring highly skilled technology workers to this country — an article of faith for the “tech bros” who supported Trump during his campaign.
Trump has throughout his years in government been firmly on both sides of the skilled immigration issue as represented by his stand on H-1B visas — the type that allow companies to bring skilled technical workers, including engineers, to this country for six-year stints. In fact, the type of visa once held by billionaire Elon Musk, a South African émigré, who became a US citizen in 2002.
Expanding the program, which is currently capped at a piddling 85,000 (65,000 plus another 20,000 reserved for those who graduate from US universities with a master’s degree or higher), is critical to the kind of economic growth and competitiveness that Trump supported all through his campaign. But for populists among his supporters — the ones who see every job that goes to someone not born on these shores as a loss — there is no middle ground. There is only “them” vs. “us.”
The current brouhaha over the visas began during Christmas week when MAGA activist Laura Loomer criticized Trump’s choice of tech entrepreneur Sriram Krishnan, who was born in India, to be a senior policy adviser on artificial intelligence, because of his previous stance on immigration. Then she drifted into a racist rant on X that included this gem: “You know, it was white Europeans who created the American Dream, and we didn’t create it so that it could be exploited by pro open border techies.”
Never shy about expressing his own views, Musk shot back on the social media site he bought in 2022 for $44 billion, “The number of people who are super talented engineers AND super motivated in the USA is far too low. If you want your TEAM to win the championship, you need to recruit top talent wherever they may be.”
And then he went off in a more obscene direction.
That spurred Trump adviser Stephen Bannon to fire back, saying of Musk, “Someone please notify ‘Child Protective Services’ — need to do a ‘wellness check’ on this toddler.”
Trump, who temporarily froze H-1B visas during his first administration in a misguided effort to stem pandemic-related job losses, attempted to put an end to the internecine warfare, telling the New York Post Saturday, “I have many H-1B visas on my properties. I’ve been a believer in H-1B. I have used it many times. It’s a great program.”
Well, in fact, Trump may have confused the program that brings tech workers into the country with the H-2B program, used to bring unskilled workers in as gardeners or housekeepers, and the H-2A program for agricultural workers. In fact, the Trump Organization properties make widespread use of both of those programs.
And frankly there’s nothing wrong with that either.
Tech companies like Amazon, Google, Meta, and Musk’s Tesla lead the pack in acquiring thousands of visas for their companies, according to a report by the National Foundation for American Policy. The foundation estimates that at least 300,000 potential employees were blocked from obtaining the visas by the cap. It’s also a system that rewards those companies that know how to work it and that have the resources to deal with the inevitable government red tape.
If Musk and his codirector on Trump’s effort to cut government waste, Vivek Ramaswamy, do nothing beyond convincing the incoming administration to cut that red tape, reach out beyond this nation’s borders, and invite in those with the talent and the drive to help build this nation, they will have done a great service.
There is also nothing contradictory about supporting a well-organized visa program that helps deliver the workforce America needs and still provides the secure border which Trump has also promised to deliver — Loomer’s ugly rantings notwithstanding.
Giving the United States access to the world’s best and brightest — who have throughout history contributed to its wealth and its culture — is essential to its future. Trump, by listening to those who know and operate in the real world, can help assure that future.

Sorry, I am not willing to agree with the Boston Globe that tells me that we cannot find the best and the brightest within our nation.
I understand that truly brilliant, one-in-a-million type of a person exists and perhaps, should be given a Visa to work in the USA on behalf of American Citizens. But most of the H1B foreign workers they import into America are not special and not the best and the brightest.
Perhaps, if for the last 40 years our government did not flood our nation with illegals and their families who have worsened our schools systems with “No Child Left Behind” and dumbed down our curriculum then we might have a larger pool of American from which to draw.
But I will not allow our government to create a problem of their doing and then “fix” the problem that just makes it worse for Americans.
That is what government does. Create problems and then fix them to the detriment of US Citizens.

But this cruel trick is used across the West. You had the misfortune to be born white, working-class and female; your objections to being captured and treated as a sex slave are an impediment to the multicultural project.

I pray often about Elon. It’s personal for me. I made an investment on his future. and it’s not money involved. I think he can change, but it will require him to profess his salvation in public, which is what God instructs everyone to to do.
tell everyone WHY you are doing go things…And point to the reasons and the origin of this purpose.
otherwise, just state the obvious and continue to spew lies after lies that even a child can register.
Elon is a child and this is tragic. and a shakespeareean comedy classic that he does not recognize the truth about his success.
I pray for him because he is weak….as much as I go full gusto about the neighbor in the street who does not know who to do.
