John Sauer, President Trump’s nominee to be solicitor general, has penned an amicus brief saying, “The power of a Western government to ban an entire social-media platform with more than 100 million users, at the very least, should be considered and exercised with the most extreme care—not reviewed on a ‘highly expedited basis.”
After initially supporting the ban on Tik Tok in 2020, President Trump changed his opinion and now contemplates whether a ban against the popular platform is in America’s best interest.
“Consistent with his commanding presence in this area, President Trump currently has 14.7 million followers on TikTok with whom he actively communicates, allowing him to evaluate TikTok’s importance as a unique medium for freedom of expression, including core political speech. Indeed, President Trump and his rival both used TikTok to connect with voters during the recent Presidential election campaign, with President Trump doing so much more effectively. As this Court instructs, the First Amendment’s ‘constitutional guarantee has its fullest and most urgent application precisely to the conduct of campaigns for political office.’” (source)
Many people have wondered what changed President Trump’s mind, with some pointing to President Trump’s meeting with TikTok CEO Shou Chew at Mar-a-Lago earlier this month. Additionally, Elon Musk and the Silicon Valley tech team, including JD Vance, are opposed to Tik Tok. However, the shift in Trump’s thinking since 2020 makes sense if you look at the timeline.
TikTok is a content and information platform that presents a significant issue from an American perspective. It is a Chinese platform available in the USA, but American platforms are banned in China. As a consequence, there is a particular conflict on geopolitical interests. Thus, in 2020 President Trump was against TikTok as an equity/fairness issue.
However, if most or all of the USA social media platforms are under the influence and control of government, which they are. And when President Trump became a victim from that influence and control, which he did. And when the only counterpoint for pushback against the Mis-Dis-Mal information scheme of the U.S. Govt., is to use an external platform to deliver information…. Then the relative issues in the platform discrimination argument take on a different context.
If you look at the timeline, after he was silenced by the U.S government’s influence in Big Tech, President Trump changed his position on Tik Tok.
If USG control the public conversation, and the overwhelming evidence is that they do; then you can argue the merit of allowing a foreign platform to exist as a domestic vehicle for information uncontrolled by the USG. This is also the essential argument that exists within communication platforms like Telegram; not coincidentally another platform targeted by the same USG.
TikTok may be garbage, I think it likely is. However, in the era where we have a documented history of our government controlling the content on social media platforms, I can make an argument that their lack of control within TikTok is really the bigger part of the USG opposition to it.
TikTok is also a target for the European Commission who recently blamed the platform for an election outcome in Romania that Brussels did not like.

Look at Intel going under as an example. About ten years ago the bean counters started laying off everyone over 50 to save on healthcare costs and got rid of decades of tribal knowledge. But all my friends did. Every brilliant person in my field was eventually retired out. I know because so many came to me looking for suggestions of where to apply. I switched fields when I took early retirement so I lost a lot of my contacts. My husband stayed in our field but went into little companies during the golden age and got bought out so, yes, we lucked out. And it was pure luck, not any inherent brilliance. I’m very grateful for my life and for the exceptionally wonderful people I’ve known. They range from computer scientists to factory workers but what makes each one of them great is that they’re hardworking, have great common sense, and are fundamentally good people. I live in a blue collar neighborhood by choice because the people around me are salt of the earth. They are what makes this world fertile and rich. And being among them richens me. I’ve watched children grow up from cribs in a hardware store and become just as good and productive as their parents, as good as the generation that they then produced. These are the people that make America glow.

Let me save you from reality. You do it ONLY when people recognize their own limitations and are ready to learn. You don’t let them bring down everyone else while you’re trying to save them. Tough love is tough. But you don’t destroy the industry of this country because you are too soft and sympathetic. When the kids are back to norm, THEN you bring them into the companies. The idea that a company has to hire someone who can’t read or write or think is verging on INSANE. It’s not the company’s job to fix the schools. It’s their job to do the work that makes our country progress. Lift those useless graduation certificates and force incompetents back into the school system until they can graduate realistically. And, in the meantime, hire immigrants who haven’t been wrecked by THEIR educational systems and who are the best of their societies. If we’re lucky, they will be seduced by our country and become part of our culture and not go back to improve their own, much as those countries hope they do.

In large urban school districts (e.g., Baltimore, Chicago, Detroit etc) , very few students graduate with the ability to read, write , and do math. Many graduate with abilities at the fifth grade level or lower. As a matter of fact, some school districts have changed their grading systems to grades of 1, 2, 3, or 4 with a 1 meaning “emerging.” This is done to enable all students to graduate regardless of their levels of achievement. A company cannot afford to hire students with such low academic levels.
Perhaps allow some very well vetted genuine intelligent people, with the caveat that they can’t bring their pregnant wife, and then bring in their entire extended family. This BS has been going on long enough. We the citizens never had a say in the matter of who is allowed to come/stay here. That is the issue.

The DS wants to destroy TikTok because they can’t control it! All we patriots have right now regarding global transparent platforms are X and TikTok. Without that transparency from those two platforms, Trump would not have been elected.
TikTok is an algorithmic social media platform. It controls who sees what on it. Therefore the speech of the content creators is largely irrelevant so long as the platform shows people what it wants them to see.
One could argue about whether or not a foreign entity has free speech in the USA but it is undeserving when the entity is controlled by a foreign government which absolutely forbids its own people from using the service in question. That alone should give anyone pause — will fight for others to access it but deny access to its own people?? Sounds like a weapon which is directed exclusively outward from its borders.
There’s barely a cell layer thick skin covering the truth of it all. Social media, especially in the form of TikTok is factually toxic to the minds of people and especially young people. While we argue about H1B and the harm it causes to our best and brightest here at home, we’re looking at an issue that is decreasing the production of the next generations of “best and brightest” among us.
A foreign government does not have free speech in the USA in my opinion and if it does, it shouldn’t for national security reasons. What do you call media controlled by a foreign power influencing the minds of people here? PROPAGANDA is the minimum description I would apply and brainwashing would be near the top. And based on what we already know? It’s espionage.
I’m unclear as to why Trump would be against it, but as the father of three sons, all of which have eventually discovered social media, I can tell you it does them no good.
And just for the purpose of saying so, TikTok is controlled by the Chinese government. Every business in China is controlled by the Chinese government. Let’s never pretend otherwise.
