Govt has run on Continuing Resolutions (CR) for 16 years.
So a $100M program started in 2008 to monitor and report the hypothetical “production and monitoring of Wii Fits sales” for Health and Human Services w 3% annual increases is now costing taxpayers $165M.
Even tho Wii Fits are no longer being produced – the program has completed or fulfilled its mission, the program continues being funded bec budget committees have not reviewed the program for 16 years. And even if they did review the program, Congress can’t end it bec we’ve had no actual budget to end it.
Actual budgets are long overdue and DOGE finding these money-pits are critical.

The companies cannot condemn properties in flood zones or refuse to issue building permits there. They dropped their flood insurance lines decades ago.
The government is not competing with the private sector.
The National Flood Insurance Program is under FEMA. Flood insurance policies do not include a “loss of use”/”additional living expense” coverage. FEMA has a program for disaster relief lodging that fills the same function for people who do not have basic LOU/ALE coverage under a homeowner policy. Since the flood insurance program does not cover LOU/ALE, those benefits are not priced into the policies.
