I ALWAYS use the railings but in Europe on huge staircases the railings are not helpful. Get an aide to walk with you, Nancy. It will only make you safer even if it does show you are no longer young and nimble.

Also, a fractured hip often starts the final decline for older people. It’s not like a hip replacement can fix it. A fractured acetabulum has to be pieced back together. I watch my dad deteriorate very quickly after his fall. Be careful, people. Falls can be deadly.

I have seen what happens to older women who break hips several of my clients over the years have had this happen its down hill after that. She should retire.
Curious … what’s up with our “healthcare” system that we can’t do better than this? Why should an otherwise healthy (I’m not talking Pelosi, here) older person be on the road to death after a fall? Seems there should be a whole lot of mitigating care steps in place.
I think its that they need to be immobilised, asvin in bed, forca long timevin order for the hip to heal, and old people do very poorly when confined to a bed for very long, for any reason.
Our bodies were meant to be up and walking, it effects digestion, circulation, muscle mass and bone formation, etc.
Very easy to get pneumonia, for example.
My wife, at 53 fell and broke her hip, they ‘pinned’ it, and she recovered fine, after rehab.
But they had her up and walking within 24 hrs of the surgery. Only a couple of steps, but a start.
I fell off the steps of my front porch last year at 68. Broke my right heal, but miraculously, it wasn’t a bad break. Before I had the x-rays at urgent care to see that it was, indeed, broken, I knew I’d not be able to walk for a bit. Into the urgent care waiting room rides a young teenage boy on a “knee scooter.” I had one ordered from Amazon before the dust settled back at home that evening. Spent 6 weeks on it, in an upstairs condo, but I moved around quite a bit on that thing! Tried a little rehab once I was fully weight bearing again, but it didn’t seem to help. So, I went back to the gym and carefully returned to my usual routine. Today, it’s like it never happened.

With an undergrad in pathology and having spent years in autopsies and medical records, it never ceases to fascinate me.
A lot depends on the patient’s history, demographics, type/ location of fracture, etc., but the fracture of the hip is often the kiss of death for the elderly.
it differs from fractures in say, the arm, because of the mobility issue. The lack of mobility (with hip) is what plays a major role in the cascade effect.

Truly. There are interventions – weight training, OsteoStrong machines. Low carb or carnivore diet, But doctors and pharma and the whole big medical establishment cannot make fortunes from that.

But. You guessed it there are $$$$ pharmaceutical drugs that have been developed that come with terrible side effects.
I just told the story (right above) of my heal fracture last year. I more or less did my own medical intervention! I’ve been on HRT since my mid-30’s after a hysterectomy, but was started on the dreaded Premarin and was on it for years. About 20 years ago, I was introduced to bioidentical hormone replacement therapy. I’ve never looked back.
Maybe at 125 years old Nancy Pelosi should retire.
