Minus 4 here when I got up, Aggiegirl. I spend most of these very cold nights praying for anyone and everyone who may be out in the cold, no matter why they are out there.
11 years ago, and only a few days removed from this date, we were in a deep freeze. Our house was creaking and cracking due to the cold, and I spent many hours praying for people who might be outside, animals who might be outside and asking the Lord to protect them all — and us.
The next day the #1 news story was about a young college student who’d gone out drinking the night before, got drunk and was dropped off at home by friends. She lived on a busy street, so even though it was late at night, they did not — or could not — wait around until she got inside.
Sad thing is, she was dropped off in front of the house she was living in as a college student, but the house next door looked the same, so she went up to the wrong house. When she could not get inside she laid down on the front steps and fell asleep. She was three blocks away from where we lived at the time.
Early the next morning an older couple were out walking and they saw the terrible sight; a human being sleeping slumped over outside in subzero weather.
No one expected her to live.
No one.
I was aghast at how cruel many people were about how she had ‘done it to herself,’ almost as if she deserved to die for getting drunk. Right. A college kid who gets drunk? Never happens and I’m sure they never, ever touched alcohol. Right.
But thanks be to God, He spared her life.
Alyssa Jo lost fingers and toes and I believe part of a foot, but she is alive and thankful to be so.

Oh, he will jump on people we meet on the trail while harnessed up, much to my chagrin! We are still working on “rules , boundaries and limitations”..

Yes. I had a little 10 pound dachshund-llasa apso mix and she walked right next to me off leash. She never looked at another dog, human, or turned her head to sniff/react/say hi. She was the only dog that was allowed to be off leash. Everyone else had to be on a leash.
I really dislike people who let their dogs off leash and then allow them to run around, approach other people and other dogs, and behave uncontrolled.
Their mentality is along the lines of a huge man running towards little old me to ask for directions. I do not know that he has honest intentions. I have to assume that he has dangerous intentions and have me sense of safety invaded.
The same goes for a dog. YOU may know your dog but I do not know your dog and my and my dog’s safety is at risk.
DH and I were walking our 12 lb. Yorkie/Shih Tzu mix years ago. Here comes a young lady walking a huge dog. Dog took off, dragging her on her stomach for a way. She let the leash go and her dog came and grabbed our dog on the stomach in front of her hind legs. I was swinging my dog on her leash with the big dog attached to her. It was a frantic few minutes. She survived, but I am very wary of big dogs and especially ones loose. We took her to the emergency vet that day, vet said where the big dog grabbed her could have killed her.
My 6 year old 10 pound papillon/dachshaun?, thrown out at my house at 5 weeks old, did die when attacked by a big dog. He got her stomach area like your dog. I think that it was the same dog (pitbull) that attacked me 6 months later.

I carry a knife and a taser with me any time I go on hikes – urban or rural. In addition to unleashed domestic dogs, I have crossed paths with wild dogs/coyotes, too (here in Texas).
The taser works great, btw. As a potentially dangerous animal approaches, just a couple clicks of the taser, which emits a loud electric snap sound, is enough (so far) to scare the dog and they turn away immediately. I highly recommend it.
The taser will light up a homeless bushwhacking crackhead lying in wait as well.

Please don’t tell people they can run their dogs off leash on trails. Here you’re not allowed to do that and people do it all the time and it is not appreciated.
There are times and places and I’m more than courteous and capable enough to chose them. I don’t need others to make that decision for me.
Do they pick up their dog waste? They remind me of people that bring their dogs to parties without asking or people that bring their children to adult gatherings. I love dogs, cats and kids if that would even need to be mentioned.

We have layer chickens and when I collect eggs I give each dog an egg. I’ve been told that it’s what has made their coat healthy and shiny.
Beau and I spooked a huge (for Florida) buck today about 30 minutes ago. If he wasn’t harnessed I’d still be chasing them! If I raise a dog from birth I don’t need a leash.
The only real problem I have with rescues is they don’t have the recall that I have with dogs that have known me their whole lives.
Watching my dog run around the house with the neighbors pit bulls is hysterical.

They need to halt SS. Each individual should have a GOLD savings account that should be matched by their employee. No one should be allowed to touch the account. The owner of the account gets to decide when they retire, and the full responsibility of that decision should be born by the individual. Property tax should also be abolished. A new tax should be created to encompass schools/roads/emergency services etc It should not be attached to anyone’s property.

Eliminating illegals from the chicken processing industry will not only drive UP wages as the processors increase wages to attract legal workers, but it will actually drive DOWN chicken prices because we will no longer have illegals here eating chicken. Same supply, less demand, results in lower prices in competition for the consumer dollar.
Extrapolate that to the economy in general, and you get to the prediction that prices GENERALLY for all goods will DECREASE when consumption by illegals is removed from the economy. Fewer people spending fewer dollars but with the same amount of goods in the supply chain should result in increased competition for the same amount of product so, voila!, lower prices generally. AND – increased productivity.

Interesting point about decreased demand. It will be interesting. It’s a global market so they can sell outside us markets. With the EU, China and Canada devaluing their currency, it makes the chicken more expensive to sell to those markets also decreasing demand.
If illegals leave in large numbers, I think it will be like it was in America before there was a human trade pipeline of cheap labor. There middle class s will be able to raise a family, but a house, send their kids to safe schools and enjoy lifelong careers that don’t require a college degree. The federal government has undue influence upon the states due to entities like the Department of Education which was a Democrat pork project that Carter signed into existence.
During Obama when states objected to his agenda the actual threat of withholding federal dollars such as education dollars from the states was openly threatened.
If there is no federal Department of Education then how could the US Congress justify federal dollars for education? The states and local government both would and should fund their own education systems AND determine the curricula without the centralized public teachers union corrupting matters.
Do you understand the concept of federalism? Our federal government is a bloated monster because it usurped control and dollars from the individual states in too many areas. The US Constitution is very specific and the founders in their writings explained why.

As long as a dept. remains in existence it will always expand as different administrations come and go and monies are requested for this or that reason, along with bloated staffing. Eliminate this one and several others that can have their actual important duties consolidated into another area. I’m all in on this kind of actions if DOGE does them in a well thought out way.

In a speech yesterday Senator Kennedy showed a chart where the SS claimed there are over 6.5 million people in the US that were 112 (or over) years old. There’s no where near that in the entire world! (202o census said less than 90,000 people at 100 or older in the US)
He had a lot more information to show that SS is riddled with fraudulent claims and payments–Even to dead people “that somehow keep cashing those checks”.

Amen to that! Yes, there are lots of unnecessary departments and a lot of fat that could, and should, be cut, BUT there are also legitimate positions and when people take a job in which they are promised certain benefits, it doesn’t make them bad people and the unreasonable anger/envy of some is counterproductive, IMHO!
My husband spent 31 years as a firefighter/EMT, risking his life, and doing some pretty significant damage to his own body in the process…yes, he did have good health care and yes, he does have a guaranteed pension. However, he paid almost 9% of his salary into that pension system, and we lost all healthcare when he retired at age 59 (full retirement age for police/fire is usually between 53 and 58 but he held on as long as possible.) We now pay over 1/4 of our income for a high deductible plan and will have to do so until we are both Medicare age, but most people don’t know that and are shocked when I tell them that!
I had several friends over the years who would tell me how “lucky” we were that my husband had a guaranteed salary and good healthcare, but their husbands were in sales or insurance and were pulling down 250K per year, so I fail to see how we were the “lucky” ones. It was a calling, and a great job, that he loved doing, but most people (other than Pelosi, et al) don’t go into public service to get rich!

I know dozens of federal employees. They all make over 100k salaries – most over 150k. That’s just salary they get insane benefits and huge pensions that they can take in full in their 50s.
The government should stop offering pensions to all new hires as it is immoral to have 70 year old people waiting tables, stocking grocery shelves etc. in order to pay for people in their 50s to sit home making more in pension payments than those elderly workers could ever hope to earn.
As almost no private sector employees have pensions anymore, why should government workers? The feds should have their TSP (gov 401k) and live like everyone else.
The ones I know don’t make anything like that.

Allow me to say some specific things about the mania for the dangerous “weight-loss drugs.”
My father died at age 72: he was lucky to have lived that long, for at his death he weighed 475 pounds.
In the Marines, he had a 28 inch waist. I wore his uniform’s belt, when I was a teenager.
What happened to my father? He ate too much.
As the years went by, he…ATE TOO MUCH!
We needed a special casket for his burial, as my mother wanted no talk about cremation. Carrying the thing from the hearse into the burial site was an absolute nightmare.
The only way to lose weight properly: stop eating so much, and start moving your body more.
I know that this simple solution stares at a cycle which seems unbreakable:
“I cannot exercise very much because I weigh too much. But I weigh too much, because I cannot exercise enough.”
I understand the cycle: but it is broken first by stopping the intake. e.g. My brother-in-law, also obese at 300 pounds, lost 50 pounds by lying in bed with The Wuhan Flu for three weeks.
No exercise was involved!
The mania for a Magic Pill is part of our hedonistic atmosphere and our corrupt, modern pharmaceutical* industry and the tendency for too many modern Americans to be undisciplined, slothful, and willing victims of their own weaknesses, for which they refuse to take responsibility.
By pushing dangerous “weight-loss” pills to the obese, the pill-pushers feed the irresponsibility, encourage a lack of self-discipline, and fertilize the trend toward indolence among those already mired in the mud of inactivity.

Everything discussed here is important and informs me on a daily basis but this food and weight thing is really starting to worry me.

I have told the story before: in the 1980’s, when Prozac (“The Instant Happiness Pill”) first came out, a friend of mine, who is a doctor, saw a patient, who had arrived in a new BMW. The patient was a successful and fairly wealthy businessman.
When my friend asked him about the possible ailment bringing him into the office, the man sighed and said:
“I think I need a prescription for Prozac.”
“And why do you think you need Prozac?”
He sighed again and said: “I just don’t think that I am as happy as I deserve to be.”
My friend politely advised him to see a priest or minister, for no (ethical) psychiatrist would give him a prescription for Prozac.

as a patient who has had a total knee replacement complicated by a fall 3 months in that broke my femur. I’ve had 3 femur revision surgeries because my femur won’t heal. Every gas station and a large proportion of businesses owned by foreign nationals is selling addiction/lifestyle dysfunction. We need to do the research and tax the crap out of products that increase health care costs, and give tax breaks to people who are fit and productive.
Best way I know to start losing weight without exercise is to get your body into Ketosis by eating animal proteins and consuming less than 20 grams of carbs a day. You can find ketosis test strips at most pharmacies. It gets boring, but it works. After you lose enough weight, you can begin an exercise regime.
Atkins works. My hubby was diagnosed as diabetic at 257 lbs and I did Atkins for him…most of the stuff was actually frozen and he lost over 100 lbs and has kept it off to the point the dr now wants him to gain a few lbs for “fat”

And water…drink lots of water. I know people who were able to get off blood pressure medicine and type 2 diabetes meds…
I agree. Cut sugar and grain flour, refined carbs. Fasting also helps. Don’t start eating until noon. Stop eating at 6 p.m.
Retired Magistrate here: I walk every day. My right hip is pinned from breaking it, and my left his is replaced due to arthritis. Before this happened I walked every day and my surgeons told me the best thing to keep me mobile was to keep on walking and so I do.
It is amusing how many people stop and ask me if I want a ride, especially in the Winter. When I tell them no, they look at me like I am nuts. A couple of months ago a Highway Patrol Trooper stopped and asked me if everything was OK and if I wanted a ride. Told him no, everything is fine, just out enjoying the day and getting my exercise.
In addition, I work out with light weights three times a week; helps a lot with the arthritis. People ask me how I stay slender and I tell them I don’t eat a lot and I exercise. They are so disappointed because they want some magic pill where no effort is required.
No gym memberships are required or fancy work out equipment; just get off the couch and move.

Have a younger sister who is 5′ 4″ tall and at one time weighed 325 lbs.
She was forced to lose 30 lbs when the doctor told her he couldn’t remove her uterus until/unless she lost that much weight.
Don’t know if he just wanted her to lose weight or not, but my sister complied — very much against her will.
She stopped eating so much. She started drinking only water. She purposely chewed every bite of food 30 times, and she lost the 30 pounds.
She said losing weight was “easy.” She said she could keep losing weight once she reached 295 pounds. She also said she did not want to lose any more weight — she said she liked being a BBW (Big Beautiful Woman).
OK, so there’s that. But four years later she had to have one of her hips replaced due to the cartilage being gone and bones rubbing against bones.
I just don’t get it, but it is her life and she is the one who has to live it, BBW and all.

But in Reddit posts and to friends, Mangione painted a different picture, complaining of insomnia in 2018, irritable bowel syndrome in 2019, plus Lyme disease, even “brain fog.” He had a bad back too, bad enough to need surgery in 2023. Though it didn’t keep him from traveling, hiking, and carrying out a carefully planned murder.1
Mangione’s medical problems have received attention. They deserve more.
For the release of Mangione’s short “manifesto” on Tuesday shows his complaints about the health insurance industry to be essentially generic. They were unrelated to any specific denial of care or coverage that he faced or even claimed had hurt someone else.
In other words, Mangione could have as easily shot an executive at an oil company and blamed climate change, or killed a hedge fund manager over income inequality. Those are more obvious targets for a would-be domestic terrorist concerned about corporate greed, as Mangione claimed to be.
Instead, he focused his anger on health insurance, (allegedly) murdering Thompson, the chief executive of the largest American insurer, in cold blood.
His anger appears to stem not from he was treated but how he felt.

I blame the decline of student achievement on the consolidation of schools which I experienced as a high school student in the 60s. As a sophomore I had to leave a k-12 school populated with local kids from our small, rural village. I went from that to a school that put students from several villages into one big warehouse-type institution where rivalries were inevitable and where pride in achievement dissipated — what we see today.
As 16 I could see it was wrong. I thank God for the educational foundation and critical thinking skills training that I received at the little school in my hometown. Everybody knew you and knew your parents. Hardly any discipline problems. Of course, life in America was different in those days, too.

Police in Altoona have said that officers and locals involved in the arrest have received threats since Mangione’s arrest and the restaurant was flooded with negative reviews. Google removed a number of disparaging one-star reviews about the restaurant, many of which included mentions about “rats” in the kitchen.

I am willing to bet that a lot of those in the above post (those handing out negative reviews)…are also a lot of those “students” who protested Israel on college campuses…and may be vehemently, anti Semitic.
