I knew that no matter what, if I was in trouble, MY Navy and Marines would be in there to get me out. I wouldn’t be imprisoned, used as a pawn in some geopolitical game. I damn well wouldn’t be murdered.
That was because my President was named Reagan, it was HIS signature on my commissioning papers, it was under HIS orders that I moved, and that meant something. We had a competent military, with loyal men (and yes, some women) running it, loyal, I should add, to their oaths to support and defend the Constitution of the United States. I wasn’t spit on, but I was ostracized as an officer cadet in a North Eastern city (one of the first classes required to be in uniform, on liberty, post Vietnam, in then over ten years). Yes, the word “baby killer” passed lips. But those were a small minority. The country WAS united under Reagan.
I have never much felt that way, since.
