The New York Times is admitting something they previously pretended did not exist, Mitch McConnell is ready to fight Donald Trump. You guys have watched this battle before, and you guys know that John Thune is the exact same ideological construct as his mentor, Mitch McConnell. We do not need to pretend here.
An additional aspect to watch closely. We know the Intelligence Community, the “Six Ways from Sunday” group, are going to do whatever is needed in order to protect their equity interests from the return of President Trump. Again, no pretending is needed.
Currently, as Senate Majority Leader, John Thune elevates to the intelligence “oversight” group known as the Gang of Eight. Four members of the Gang of Eight (Go8) come out of the Senate, and four from the House.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, SSCI Vice-Chairman Mark Warner, and Senate Majority Leader John Thune are three of the four from the Senate. However, we still do not know who will join Thune from the GOP side. Who will be the Republican SSCI Chairman?
Internally, Susan Collins is now Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee. Mitch McConnell is now Chairman of the Senate Rules Committee, a specifically taken position to retain control of Senate rules (think Cloture, Filibuster and importantly, Recess Appointments via Senate schedule).
With Thune on the Gang of Eight, Collins as Appropriations (spending), and McConnell in charge of ‘rules’, who joins Thune on the Gang of Eight?
The three most likely SSCI members who could be given the role are: Tom Cotton, James Lankford or John Cornyn. My suspicion based on the DeceptiCon playbook, and his skeptical statements about Trump intelligence nominations, would be to watch out for Senator James Lankford.
Cornyn who challenged Thune for leadership, is not currently in any of the leadership roles. Perhaps he will be given the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chair; who knows. Senator Cotton, a Sea Island participant, would be another stealth move.
We need to watch closely who John Thune (with McConnell directing) puts into the role of SSCI Chairman. That’s part of the Intelligence Community weapon against the risk presented by a return of President Donald Trump.

Mr. McConnell, whose current term ends in 2027 and who has not said whether he will seek another, has said he plans to focus intently during the next two years on advancing his interventionist strain of foreign policy, which flies in the face of the president-elect’s “America First” approach. He also wants to concentrate on preserving the Senate’s institutional independence at a time when Mr. Trump, who will have a governing trifecta in January, has made clear that he means to bend the chamber to his will. Constitutionally, Congress has to declare war. President Trump can work his priorities until they vote to declare war on Russia, and I don’t think they want to get exposed like that.

McConnell does lead a separate but equal branch of the government from Trump. They are both on a level playing field.
That was the point of our system of government – separation of powers – co-equal branches of government though McConnell’s share to the legislative branch is only 50% of the total 100%.

A suggestion would be to expand the authority of the “Counsel of Office of the President” to inclue the investigation and prosecution of the employees of the Justice Department and FBI (And Congress, but that would never get passed…) for treason, sedition, violations of civil rights under color of law, and unauthorized disclosure (‘leaks’) of classified information.
Our system of protection of civil rights is defective for improper FISA surveillance. It is not the proper role for aa court to act as advocate for the 4th Amendment. The role of our courts is to ‘decide’. So nother suggestion is to also add the authority to review FISA actions to the lawyers of the Ofice of the President. Improper FISA applications and motions could be opposed (without notice to the ‘defendants’ being spied upon) , and the Office of the President could seek sanctions from the FISA Court against DoJ attorneys who fib or misrepresent. The FISA Appeal statute would also need revision to permit denial of an improper or unsupported “motion to surveil”.
IIRC, the FBI has to go through the National Security Division at the DOJ and then to the AG or DAG for approval before they can take their FISA warrant applications to the FISA court. Todd Blanche is set to become the DAG. He is no stranger to lawfare from the DOJ and FBI.
I’ve heard that the DOJ’s National Security Division is indeed subject to investigations by an Inspector General, but not Horowitz at the DOJ. Apparently, the DOJ NSD is covered by the IC IG Thomas Monheim. He works at ODNI in the same position previously occupied by Michael Atkinson.
Well, wait a second. ICIG Monheim and the the CIA IG both have announced that they are retiring before Trump takes office. The new ICIG will need to be nominated by the president and confirmed by the senate. I suppose the new CIA IG would too. Both of those nominations likely would need to go through the SSCI.

Then there is the issue of security clearances–if Trump says so, who loses theirs? McT is going to earn a legacy he doesn’t want.
The way I understand it, our federal legislators do not go through the security clearance process. That is why Kevin McCarthy pulled Ilhan Omar off the House Foreign Affairs committee. He did not trust her with the classified information that passed through that committee.
