There’s no comment or confirmation from President Trump, so take things with the proverbial grain of salt, however, what Reuters is reporting here does make a lot of sense.
According to Reuters ‘exclusive’ reporting, President Trump is considering former Acting DNI, former Ambassador to Germany, and former peace negotiator for Serbia/Kosovo, Ric Grenell for the position of Special Envoy to Ukraine. This would position Ric Grenell as the peacemaker in the center of something that is very strategically important to President Trump and the world.
Many people have wondered why we have not heard the name Ric Grenell before for any other position. If the report is accurate, this could indeed explain the void. Remember, Marco Rubio is nominated for State Dept, but Trump appears to be putting guardrails against the neocon tendencies of the Florida Senator and junior McCain.
President Trump has removed the mid-east from Rubio’s portfolio with the appointment of Steven C. Witkoff to be Special Envoy to the Middle East. That appointment stops Secretary Rubio from blocking a restart of the peace process via the Abraham Accords. If President Trump wanted to smartly keep Rubio out of the Ukraine dynamic, appointing Ric Grenell would be a solid option.
WASHINGTON, Nov 22 (Reuters) – President-elect Donald Trump is considering tapping Richard Grenell, his former intelligence chief, to be a special envoy for the Russia-Ukraine conflict, according to four sources familiar with the transition plans.
Grenell, who served as Trump’s ambassador to Germany and was acting director of national intelligence during Trump’s 2017-2021 term, would play a key role in Trump’s efforts to halt the war if he is ultimately selected for the post.
While there is currently no special envoy dedicated solely to resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict, Trump is considering creating the role, according to the four sources, who requested anonymity to discuss internal deliberations.
Trump could ultimately decide not to create a special envoy for the conflict in Ukraine, although he is strongly considering doing so, the sources said. If he does, he could ultimately select someone else for the role, and there is no guarantee Grenell would accept.

This would be a good opportunity for Grenell and come with very high worldwide visibility. A major-league powerful and important job, that would put Grenell at the center of the geopolitical universe for the first year of the Trump administration. President Trump does appear to trust Ric Grenell, and the trust aspect in the relationship would be extremely important.
All in all, while it is only a rumor right now, the Reuters story does make a lot of sense.
Personally, if true, I think it is a great idea.

I do appreciate SD pointing out guardrails for Rubio as has been a concern here. Rubio does seem to be passionate about China and on the same page as PDJT but the message would be clear- hands off Middle East and Ukraine. I suspect the guardrail for China would be POTUS himself! And it at least temporarily hobbles the corrupt SSCI as Rubio would be the incoming Chair to the corrupt Warner co-chair.

Does Grenell have any history with Putin? I mean during Trump’s first term did Grenell and Putin meet? I ask because while it’s crucial that Trump trusts Grenell, it would also be great if Putin does as well.
From what I’ve gathered, Putin appreciates an honest dialogue, and strength through PEACE. Not the usual backstabbing political nonsense that he can clearly see and that does us no good. I think Grenell would represent Trump well and not stab him in the back.
That’s my thoughts too. I remember when he and Obama had a little photo op at some big international event, and each said a few words to the media. Then Putin went off stage but Obama stayed and kept talking with the press, bragging on himself of course. This blog angered me because it illustrates the games PDJT has to play to staff his administration and make sure his policies are carried out. Specifically, having to appoint special envoys because he cannot fully trust his SoS nominee.

You might consider putting your anger aside since PDJT will need to continue to use strategies he has developed in order to hurdle the myriad obstacles that the corrupt Establishment in our federal government AND the corrupted media will keep throwing across his path. Think of it this way: Rubio is a figurehead since he won’t do anything useful anyway. You know Rubio is working for the IC, so you feed him what you want the IC to know. You appoint special envoys (an emissary) to critical positions so that part of the policy does not get screwed up. It is the hand we have, but we can use it…
First off, in any admin the SoS or any cabinet member works at the direction and pleasure of the POTUS, and any that try going rogue or pursueing their own agenda, get shown the door.
Secondly, in his first admin, PDJT acted as his own SoS, with his cabinet officer just a messenger boy (Tillerson,Pompeo) while PDJT did the heavy lifting, such as with Kim, and the ME.
I think that would be the way it is supposed to work, however you will burn through a lot of nominations and those can be slow walked to hamstring 47. There are a lot of ways to undermine an agenda, unfortunately.
I think the placing of those who can get quick confirmation, like Rubio, is a good strategy. Monitor Rubio’s behavior and if he goes rogue or works against 47, he’s fired. But Rubio is a politician and will ride the popular horse, he can speak well on his feet, so he has ability that can benefit MAGA. If he is loyal to MAGA and shows backbone, he could be good in the position. But he will need to be watched closely.
Dutch, it is a good point that PJDT did nearly all the heavy lifting himself in his first term. It is remarkable how much got done and what a spectacular success it was: energy independence, peace in the middle east, economic growth, zero new wars (!), to name a few. Imagine how much he could accomplish if he had had competent help and did not have to deal with vipers.
It is because of that success that the swamp struck with everything they had. He showed the American people that they had been lied to for so long and that the people in charge were completely incompetent fools. I think he has good people now and he will not have to do everything himself. That is my hope, anyway.

This potential Ric Grenell appointment makes sense, and reduces the deep state intelligence impact which RINO Rubio brings to the table. Grenell is a very capable man.
I haven’t liked Rubio’s appointment, but have reasoned there is more behind the scenes with these appointments than I can see. Trump is a master negotiator and we have to trust him.
I would love to see Grenell in that position. He’s a no nonsense guy.

Trump has to date given no sign of appreciating how much the world has changed since 2020. The fact is, the US has very little leverage over Russia. Russia is not desperate for a settlement, Russia will not accept a frozen conflict ala Korea, that allows Ukraine to rebuild and come at it again in twenty years. Russia is winning and always has been winning, and it has lost a lot of blood and treasure in defeating NATO’s aggression towards it, which can be traced right back to the early 90’s in the case of the US generally, and to the 2008 Munich Security Conference in respect of NATO in particular. NATO has ignored Russia’s repeated warnings not to encroach into its own backyard, which is the equivalent of Mexico for the US. And how would the US react if Russia overthrew the duly elected Mexican govt in 2014 and started arming, equipping and training the Mexican army which then started shelling Texan towns close to the Texas-Mexican border killing thousands of Texans over a ten year period. This is exactly precisely what NATO and the US have been doing in Ukraine.
So the Russians are most unlikely to want to accept anythng less than their three objectives Putin laid out at the start of the SMO: Ukraine can’t ever join NATO, Ukraine must be de-nazified, and Ukraine must be de-militarised. And why should it accept any compromise, given the history I outlined above?
So what bargaining chips does Grenell have? Russia is sanctions-immune. Ukraine doesn’t need cash, it needs weapons and manpower. And the West can’t provide those without completely disarming itself and it can’t produce them fast enough because its MIC is corrupt and bloated and inefficient relative to Russias, which is functioning like a well-oiled machine.
I’ll add removal of the bio labs as well. Putin reported it. Propaganda Press squashed it.

Russia doesn’t care, because the BRICS and global majority (i.e. the 7 billion people who don’t live in the West) will take everything Russia has, even if the West doesn’t want any of it. Russia would like to do business with the West but if the West doesn’t want to, Russia is not damaged, in any way. This is part of the changes since 2020 I was referring to in my original post.

You have a point, and even Putins stated objectives require GUARANTEES, and while Putin can and I believe DOES trust Trump, Putin knows he is term limited.

Russia effectively won the conflict in the first three hours. It has had complete air superiority ever since. So much for the Ghost of Kiev; he really is a ghost now.
It’s been a long, slow grind, in part, because Putin has not waged a fast-moving operation of annihilation, and is attempting to limit civilian casualties. This was never a lightning operation. His initial statement I believe honestly stated a deep historical kinship between the involved nations, and an effort to spare the civilian population.
Accepting Putin’s beliefs, this has been akin to a civil war for these two formerly close Soviet republics.
The other part for the slow progress is obviously a dump of Western weapons systems into the region to protract things. The current Ukrainian government is a zombified CIA creation that is disconnected from its people, and that will do anything to keep the conflict going. They are willing to kill every Ukrainian citizen to purportedly save them.
So when this war dies, so does the current Ukrainian puppet leadership.
But while the West gloats over their ‘progress’ in protracting this conflict, they look back and see that they have substantially depleted their own weapon reserves in doing so. The West is running out of conventional weapons systems that can stop the Russians. And they have depleted themselves to bare minimum home and NATO defense needs.
While the Russians have quickly built up a durable arsenal complex that can more than keep up.
The Western cabal now has no chance of winning this conflict conventionally.
So one other reason (besides Trump coming to end this) for the Western cabal attempting to escalate this to a strategic exchange is that they are simply running out of munitions and equipment to keep supporting a conventional conflict.
Putin wants peace, and will not take the latest missile bait, even from France. It is a thinly-veiled invitation to a strategic exchange and MAD. I think he will wait this last desperate step out until Trump comes and puts an end to it.
Whatever envoy PDJT selects will have a historical and successful mission, IMO. We all need peace now.

It would seem that as the person who “is” the executive branch of government, Trump can redefine, including expand or limit, the “job description” not only for the Secretary of State, but ANY of his cabinet appointees.
Although legislation grants these officials presumptive authority to act without the scope of their presumed spheres, nothing prohibits the president from expressly limiting their authority even to a mere (constitutional) advisory function, while assigning specific tasks to other officers.

I admit that I was getting a little antsy as the “cabinet is complete” but his name was still missing. Grenell is a seasoned diplomat and I feel certain a negotiated deal has or is being finalized/negotiated and the the backdoor channels are working as intended.
So I would fully support Grenell as the face of the shuttle diplomacy that will occur once POTUS has officially assumed office.
