UPDATE: We will continue bumping this thread to keep the communication lines available.
...”I live in the Western part of the US; reading these comments is like listening in on a (telephone) party line. This is the first I’ve heard firsthand live reports from the people directly affected. For the first time there is no canned, approved spoon fed mis-information delivered by the faceless and unaffected paid to be there.”….
Which is exactly the reason we keep this thread going!
As the areas in Eastern Tennessee, Western North Carolina and the Western gulf coast of Florida continue recovery operations from Hurricanes Helene and Milton, our thoughts are with those who are still impacted and dealing with the long-term recovery process.
If you have stability and the ability to communicate, we are wondering how you guys are doing.

Working with several ground groups, we have sent toolboxes and resources into the area for the arduous tasks that remain. There are many who feel overwhelmed; just know our thoughts and deepest prayers remain with you. It will get a little better every day.
Resourceful teams (mostly electrical restoration experts) who learned quickly after they helped the Puerto Rico Mountain areas in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria are doing amazing work reaching some of the more isolated areas. These are good friends with a git-r-done approach.
Eastern Tennessee power has mostly returned; however, approximately 23,500 of the 1.5 million customers that lost power, just in the Western North Carolina area still lack electricity as of today, according to Poweroutage.us. Additionally, there are still about 365,000 Floridians without power.
The power restoration in the dense mountain forests of WNC is slow going, some roads and bridges are completely washed away. According to the Associated Press report, “The crews aren’t doing what they typically do, which is a repair effort. They’re rebuilding from the ground up,” said Kristie Aldridge, vice president of communications at North Carolina Electric Cooperatives {link}.
There are widespread rumors and disparate reports of the overall death toll, at last count was well over 200. Anecdotal reports from people in the WNC region put the death toll much higher but are difficult to confirm. We do not want to spread rumors, yet we simultaneously accept this close to the election there is an unfortunate incentive for both federal and state emergency management officials to keep the death toll numbers hidden.
The bottom line is a concern for everyone in the impact areas. Therefore, ground reports are the most valuable. How are y’all doing?
Dear God of grace and strength, in the midst of uncertainty, fear and change we turn to You for stability and strength. Please grant us the wisdom and fortitude to navigate the unknown, the courage to face challenges, and the faith to trust Your divine plan.
Heavenly Father, let Your unwavering presence be our anchor in the aftermath of these storms. Grant us the resilience to face the challenges of recovery with grace and hearts filled with purpose. May we continue to find, patience, stability and fellowship in Your eternal love.
Thank You for guiding us through these uncertain times. In Jesus blessed and loving name we pray. ~ Amen.

Avery County Airfield, Spruce Pine. Just sent two pairs work boots from their Amazon immediate needs list. Thanks to Harrison on Oct. 31st for posting their info with link. I talked to a coordinator for them over the phone many days ago before they got super organized and set up a website. They were one of the first doing chopper rescues from the small airstrip. There is also a Walmart needs list. Says they are making deliveries to folks with no roads. Setting up for the long haul of winter and beyond. Rebuilding lives and structures.

Thank you, CC. I’ve flagged this site for future use.
So glad . . . Some of those immediate needs items are so simple, like aluminum foil, canned foods, paper plates. It was hard to choose. We decided as a family to purchase work boots as our first donation. I’m trying to organize a group here in my small local world to choose one high-ticket item and find a way to make it happen. Because I know so many horse, mule and livestock people, I’m thinking I can be creative and persuasive to gather enough money to buy the livestock fencing and metal posts that are on the needs list. It will be a project . . . wish me luck.
After Hurricane Helene, an aerial assessment by N.C. Forest Service personnel estimates 822,000 acres of timberland damaged, totaling approximately $214 million in losses across North Carolina.
To put this in perspective, the damaged area is about 620 times the size of Central Park in New York City.
Damage by Ownership:
78% Private (individuals, corporations, other private ownerships)
21% Public (U.S. Forest Service, other public lands)
1% Reserved (parks and conservation areas)
The hardest-hit region spans six counties, with Buncombe and McDowell counties at the center.
Horse and mule family here. This post makes my heart sing.
Another touch of humor…he thought he was ready.

Here, there, and everywhere. Keep on sharing CC! 😀

Sometimes we focus so much on the big things, that we miss important smaller ones. In one case a monster camper for a family – in the other the ability for hundreds to stay warm.
I keep circling back to pick up news and, most especially, places to help. Just added WNCHeatFairy to my list of charities and sent a small donation. I have bids going on an eBay item so will have more funds to send to this enterprising gentleman by end of this week. Have to smile that, somehow, HHRE (Hurricane Helene Relief Efforts) has become my raison d’être🙂
Funny you use the term raison d’être. A personal note . . . many times in the last weeks/months I have prayed to God to direct me, to give me another purpose, other than the current needs of my family. All of a sudden, I find myself here. Hmmmnnn . . .
The cleanup effort is a tremendous task in many areas. Here is an example:
Just like that, they can help more people!
Don’t have FB access, but if nothing else it shows help comes in all sizes and shapes.
Not unexpectedly, the opinions about FeMa run deep and strong…
No words. I do believe that President Trump will fix it if he gets in. He has mentioned FEMA (not in a good way) in some of the recent rallies.
Watching his NC rally this morning and President Trump is spending considerable time talking about the failure of FEMA for the state (all states).
How volunteering time can save families in need money they can’t afford.
New website connecting volunteers with people needing help. It’s for both sides of the ridge – WNC and ET.
An example of the difference even the little things can mean to the people in the areas severely effected by Helene – a sense of hope and knowing one isn’t abandoned. This is a set of messages between one of the organizers and a crew member.
God’s people over the government any day of the week and twice on Sundays.
The pace is high and any help would be appreciated. Winter approaches and families are in need.

I just sent one dollar for every year of Jesus’ life. Somehow that seemed appropriate.

Harrison, are these the guys who rescued the Mom and her 11-day-old baby? (FEMA tried to take the credit, but my recollection is, it was really Savage Freedoms?)
Think so.
Savage Ops is on my list. I need a side-hustle to earn some extra money in order to donate to more places.
Hah, we are like-minded and like-hearted!
As I keep reminding, this one will be a long road back measured in months. Pace yourselves.

To those still coming here for updates and ideas of ways to help.
I just called and spoke with Andy, owner of AA Pet Taxi & Transport, thanks to post by Harrison, this thread, October 29th. We exchanged contact info and established text comms.
WOW! He is working so very hard to help victims in the mountains who have lost most everything. He gave me a quick rundown of the way his relief effort began, which is that folks called him to try to help find their pets after the hurricane. It quickly became so much more. Now he is also working with other groups. Andy has a Facebook page. He said there is an Amazon needs list link. I’m not on FB, haven’t yet looked at it. He was interviewed recently on a WBT (radio?) broadcast. Sent me the link but I haven’t had time to check it.
But here’s the thing. Andy takes his truck into the mountains to personally deliver goods to those with no transportation. He told me of FEMA trying to “turn him around” and not allow him on certain mountain roads. He knows his way, so he goes anyway. (Andy is very polite, but I can imagine this scenario as F you, FEMA.) I told him of a couple of things that I might be able to donate if he knows anyone with the particular need. Would be expensive to ship, so need to know. He said he would check with families and other groups during his outings. If so, he offered to take photos of delivery of said donation(s) and send to me–totally not necessary, but secretly . . . Yup! Would like.
I will make a donation, in some form, no matter.
His name is Andy Alligood. Here is the number as well as an address for shipping:

Well I think this is the actual FB link with the Amazon list. The other is probably the interview.

Okay, President-Elect Trump…Appalachia showed America that we had your back. Now…effective January 20…do you have ours?
Agree. I was thinking of you during the election returns for those states.
Cardi B: I have two words for you, and they are NOT ‘Merry Christmas’!
I have three words . . .
Still here. And will continue to be. eBay bids are up to $56 on an item, auction ends tomorrow. That’s two winter coats for kids or a helluva lot of aluminum foil:) Will probably go with the coats, although both would keep people warm.
I share your (perceived) frustration about not being able to do more. And then something hit me out of nowhere — what if it is our intent that makes a difference? I can’t buy an entire Amish cabin, but I can donate to buy part of one. When I did that, I envisioned the completed cabin warmed by the softest, most gentle white light, surrounding the cabin and its inhabitants. I guess one might call that a form of prayer?
Just put up a new series of posts with info – but they all went to moderation…
Dear moderators, hand here please and thanks? 🙂
Harrison, I just this minute had trouble with a post also. My last sentence before my edit was:
I wonder . . . . Where is Harrison? LOL
As if in answer to your thought, posting up a string of information on this very page 😉
I’d stick them on the Presidential Thread. “Now that President Trump has been re-elected, let’s hope he can find time to turn his attention back to…” Just to appease the hall monitors…
The Prez Thread is so busy right now, it’s hard to scan through all the comments to find this subject. Guess I can search each page by all of your names. Slow process.
I am definitely keeping this bookmarked though. So many references here.
I just got a text from one of the relief workers on the ground today. They need waterproof boots, men’s and women’s. I am spreading the word and will send what I can tomorrow. Will look for a sale!
Oh my gosh. I don’t know what I did wrong. Did I just blow the margins?
Moderators, I just tried to delete a post because it looked like I had somehow accidentally blown the margins. Have no idea what happened. It was just text. Then it said I could not edit. Feel free to delete it if it is in the bin. Will try again later.
Going to try this again now that the election is over. What is 100% for sure, the recovery from Helene’s devastation is far from over.
This video is about the spirit of the people in Appalachia, their determination, and a bit on their needs. It’s from a couple of weeks ago, but the core of its message still rings loudly and true.

One of the differences between FeMa and the people. This doesn’t count all the tiny homes that the Amish are building for people.
One of the comments to the video – Bethel Wesleyan Church is one that is getting supplies deep into the mountains. The request is for protection from some areas. There are now criminals operating in various areas, stealing from the people.
Is OB going to call the Pastor, Tim Clark, at Bethel Wesleyan Church? He has a guy Bud that’s been delivering goods into the mountains…but needs saw teams for some folks.
Well, Red Cross is there. I don’t donate to them, but at least they have a presence.
Unfortunately don’t expect more than strongly worded letters and sound bites – but the House is opening an investigation into the discrimination show by the government towards PDJT likely voters, such as that by the now fired coordinator that told her teams not to provide support to them in Florida…
Jamie Raskin. Sure thing. He’ll get right on it.
