Hurricane Milton’s unpredicted shift/wobble southward closer to Yucatan Peninsula now puts Milton on a more traditional East-NorthEast track as it heads toward the Southwest Florida Coast. [Latest NHC Update Here].
A large evacuation program is underway as people leave the west coastal Florida areas. However, the exact path of Milton is still unknown. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis holds a press conference to discuss, among other things, the urgent distribution of fuel to assist in keeping fuel flowing to the gas stations on the evacuation routes.
Additionally, debris removal from the areas impacted by Hurricane Helene will continue through today on a 24 hour operation; which will continue until conditions deteriorate and it is no longer safe. A massive assembly of state resources for search, rescue and recovery operations continue being staged. Due to the needs in Eastern Tennessee and Western NC, an additional 36,000 linemen and power recovery operations are flowing toward Florida from far west.

As many of you are aware, my homebase is directly in the path. I will provide updates as soon as possible and share plans for communication and ongoing CTH site operation (tonight). We will pre-schedule the daily open threads so that discussion of all important topics can continue uninterrupted.
My message…. Despite the chaos around us in the deep south, for those outside the impact region, we need to keep pushing information for voter registrations (and ballot challenges) ahead of election deadlines and stay focused on the longer-term mission of MAGA 2024. For those in the impact region – focus on your immediate needs, follow prior advice on planning and preparation, evacuate if needed. Don’t forget to pause, breathe and PRAY. Love to all y’all. /SD
I have a son in Naples. He’s staying put. Said he waited 40 minutes to fill his tank at Costco- lines out to the street. Mandatory evacuations closer to the coast-west of 41. He’s further inland, concrete apartment building. His first hurricane-was out of town for Helene.
Will be a wild experience, but east and north of hwy 41 should avoid the storm surge.
Also know people in same area who are staying put. They were there for Helene, also.
No flooding. And their place is pretty sealed up with hurricane shutters, etc.

You’re ok, I.M. Sundance is a wise and experienced man who will make best decisions for himself. Even knowing that about him, my heart is yanked into concern for him as well. He is a man who is willing to stand in his place and pay a price for standing. So I will wait with concern to hear from him after the storm passes.
I remember what it felt like when the first astronauts to circle the moon went into that radio-silence time. I don’t remember the exact minutes–it was sort of extensive. So the entre nation, me included (I was in my late 20s or thereabouts), waited with our hearts beating hard….waiting….waiting….waiting…. listening to silence and static on the radios. Waiting for the sound of their voices as they came out of radio silence–back into an area where they were not blocked from communicating with earth. We waited. And then with super-GLAD, we heard their voices again.
I will definitely be waiting to hear from Sundance after the storm passes. Yes.
I don’t like these storms but, I’m not leaving Florida this is the best place I’ve either lived or worked.

Speaking of Kentucky, I saw a posting elsewhere today of a small church that was cut off from getting supplies and electricity, so they asked for a generator, gas and supplies to be coptered in.
When the copter arrived there was a makeshift cloth sign hanging on what was left of the porch railing:

The front porch was gone. The back of the church was open to the rising mountain behind it and the roof was missing in several places, but church is on Sunday at 2 PM.

I live on the central Gulf Coast…..born,raised and retired here to home. Although, I lived many places across our great country during my working years.
I have run from many a storm….but wouldn’t trade home for anywhere else.

If this storm takes our shingles, I think we will go the metal roof route.

As of 7pm, all access to the barrier islands will be blocked. People can leave, but not return.

The problem as I see it Bet is the first few million to evacuate from the Tampa St.Pete Metro have drunk the gas and diesel like locusts and holed up in all available open spaces from Ocala going North.
There aren’t millions of hotel rooms, Air BnB or VRBO properties to rent and hardened shelters are full of mobile home people and their pets already.
I can barely cross the northbound lane at the highway coming out of my neighborhood to get across the street to buy a maple bear claw and a bag of ice at 7 am.
If I do get there, the gas pumps are a nightmare with rude Liberal Coastal Florida Elites who sneer at the local Country folk.

Cautionary note: do not do this if you haven’t actually run your dishwasher in a while. Haven’t used mine since buying my house six years ago. That’s because the rubber parts and pipes got dried up and cracked. Didn’t have money to replace or repair, so the interior is used as “closet” space. Point being, the interior might not be water-tight if the seal is damaged.
New dishwashers are hot garbage unless you have the money for a Bosch or the like.
There’s only me, so I do dishes by hand. Be safe!
This may not be a great idea. Water can enter from the drain. Depending on infrastructure in your area lift stations without electric power fill up, and backup into homes. It’s hideous.

Young couple on wife’s side of the family who are expecting their first child in a couple months left Tampa area with two small dogs expecting to find a place to stay up in St. Augustine in far northeast FL. They made it. Everything was full. Then they secured an expensive AirBnB (any port in a storm) but shortly later were told it was highly likely the power was going to go out. My sister-in-law in the Midwest called every hotel in the area until she scored the last Holiday Inn room. Halleluiah. There was prayer involved.

I found this link full of videos of Ian’s aftermath in Daytona. From what I’m reading & researching (extensively!) is that when this storm hits this area, it will be much worse that Ian. Dang, doesn’t look good for this side of FL. Funny thing is that my other choice to move to was Clearwater.
