Giving an update from Steinhatchee, Florida, Governor Ron DeSantis was asked about communication from Joe Biden. Governor DeSantis pointed out that he has not spoken with Biden; however, he would recommend that all available FEMA and Federal recovery efforts be directed immediately to the Western North Carolina region.

Just last night, I was finally able to make contact with one who is just west of Asheville. Grateful to know he is safe, but he said the destruction was overwhelming. And this from a native Floridian who has experienced many disasters.
We were vacationing at Lake Lure last week and saw the damage first hand. It is terrible. I feel so bad for all those people in need of food, potable water, transportation, communication, and health assistance.
I have a home in the NC mountains and have a lot of Florida neighbors who come for the summer and go home in early October.
So glad to see DeSantis bring his not inconsiderable expertise to these catastrophes in a neighbouring state. Much needed.

WNC has been a summer vacation spot for Floridians as well as yankees for over 100 years and a permanent retirement location for many of those after visiting. The area has four distinct seasons, which are usually mild; uncrowded due to lack of major business segments and employers; low cost of living (historically); and beautiful natural setting with numerous outdoor activities available. And, of course, native southern hospitality. What’s not to like?
They will recover but the population will decline. Buying opportunities will be abundant.

I saw a video posted by a local where he talked about all of the vandalism and looting that’s been going on. Police are posted at a local grocery store to prevent looting. The police and residents have zero tolerance for looters and criminals after a disaster. Everything goes pitch black at night and it gets scary as hell, life and death scenarios.
I understand west NC and eastern TN are bad off, but parts of Florida have been slapped around pretty hard. Is he saying Florida has such a strong handle on their most serious areas that they can easily make up for any shift of federal resources to another state.

Helene was physically huge as hurricanes go so its impact was spread over an unusually wide area. Western coastal Florida is a disaster. Like many, probably hundreds, my brother in law’s sister in Pinellas County completely lost her family’s house due to the storm surge, even though the center of the storm itself passed by well away from the immediate coast. There is 5 feet of ocean sand covering the road in areas like Johns Pass and Madeira Beach. Bulldozers have to be brought in to clear the roads. This is common. I think DeSantis’ point is that the difference is that at least the people in FL can be accessed and are not cut off like the folks in TN/NC.

Knowing that many Floridians are smart enough to have shelters on higher ground gives me an improved view of them. I’ve long cited frequent hurricanes as the reason I wouldn’t recommend living in Florida. It just happens over and over and over.
But if there’s a large population of Floridians who have shelter in regions typically outside of the hurricane zone? That’s a model I could appreciate. It’s more expensive than most could afford though…
