Over 20 yrs ago was on one of the feds driver training tracks. When exiting one of the training cars in a cutout, which was against a fenced, hilly, forested area, saw the flash of a long gun and briefly saw the shooter up on a hill obscured by trees.
Initially thought it was some part of the training until I heard the
instructor ‘s radio screaming “shots fired, evacuate the track area etc”. The instructor started screaming at me to get back in the car and scoot out of there. Once back in the staging area maybe a 1/4 mile away, heard the massive response of multiple law enforcement agencies including a helo. Turns out, I was the only one who saw the location of the shooter. The swat teams requested I respond to their command post back over on the training track. When I got back to the track, I found a bunch of heavily armed LE officers setup with their backs against the hill the shooter had been on. They were facing away from the threat. Once I pointed out where the shot came from, they handed me a vest & had me follow maybe 4 or 5 officers who were climbing the hill the shooter had been on. When I got to the top of the hill, I saw a hole in the fence and the officers holding a guy who was about 80 yrs old on the ground with guns pointed at his head. The poor old guy had a single shot 22 he’d been using to hunt wild turkeys. According to what I heard him say, He hadn’t breached the hole in the fence and was shooting at a turkey. He claimed he had no idea what the cars were doing down at the bottom of the hill and wasn’t shooting at anything but a turkey. The poor old guy had peed himself. They eventually let him go. They’ll be more to this AK guy today in Florida

we scraped off some into powder and left it heaped up at the cut
then lit it with a lighter
the little heap started burning brightly and eventually ingnited the rest of the solid core
by this time we were several blocks away watching it from a concealed perch up in the dunes
it ended up lighting up the beach and dunes and beach houses like daylight for blocks to either side of the burning flare
eventually police showed up and watched til it burned down and went out, they didn’t call out a fire engine
good fun when you’re 15
good thing it wasn’t an explosive munition or we’d have been toast, but I think we were reassured enough by the printing to be confident it was a flare and had heard of and had a vague understanding of what phosphorus was
