In my belief and experience, anyone that seeks God in earnest in their heart and asks for his guidance, will be guided by God. But it requires one to unharden their heart – allow it to happen. God has given us our own volition and ability to reason. Some reason their way away from God and some use their volition to surrender to God.

I’ve read this comment thread, the responses, and your replies. I hear you about that inner voice. But how do you know who is speaking?
There IS a way to know, and that is to listen directly to the voices that spoke 2,000 years ago. I also hear you about people using the Word as a weapon, and indeed there is much of that. My suggestion, therefore, is this, and it’s not terribly difficult or time consuming. Hey, three day weekend. Something better to do?
First, get ahold of a New Testament, printed or online. You can check one out of the library. Read Jesus’ own words in Matthew 5-7, the sermon on the mount. You can evaluate EVERYTHING you read or hear, whether from a person, or a religious denomination, or a speech, by those 3 chapters. Anything that is counter to anything contained there has strayed from Christ’s message.
Next, approach the New Testament selectively. I suggest reading these books first, in this order: Matthew, Mark, Luke, Acts, Romans. Read these books through like you would a novel. Then go back to the start and go through them again. This time, deep dive them considering a chapter at a time, or even a verse at a time. Then read John. I save John for last, because John is a dive into the deep end, a twelve course meal best savored slowly, deep diving John verse by verse, word by word.
Once you have done the above, it won’t really matter what ANYONE else says or thinks about what you say. At that point the only question will be not a question at all, but a challenge, best stated as “choose, sir.”
Happy reading. I know it will be. And uplifting too. The world will open up to you in all the splendor and beauty of God’s creation, and you will understand why Catholics like to talk about truth, beauty, and goodness. Enjoy.

I started all that in my teens after reading all the Norse and Greek myths – one led to the other, and so on…
I guess what I’ve noticed is that it seems difficult for believers in whatever religion or ideology they follow to accept (or even consider) that others simply don’t believe the things they accept as true.
It’s not because they’re uninformed or stupid or bad (or bitter), it’s just that they don’t accept the information provided as being plausible.
I felt a connection to God long before I read any religious texts, and I still feel that connection.
It may satisfy Christians to either write me off as a heathen or identify the God I know as the God from the Bible, but it’s simply not so.

If you’re a public employee ( except military, Coast Guard, cop, firefighter, EMT )… you lose one vote.
