If you wish to be a public persuader rather than a person who writes obscure books on historical figures, consider asking yourself if leaving out just a small sentence or reference might make you more successful in your endeavor.
Don’t get me wrong. I feel it’s a perfectly good question to ask questions about historical figures, King included. I respect historians who wish to get at truth, academic scholarship.
I don’t think it wise to inject historical questions about a revered figure who is still a contemporary of millions into a season of political unrest and conflict if what you wish to accomplish is to influence a large segment of the American people to a totally new point of view. They might be on the edge of agreeing with you on nine points but because they reject strenuously the tenth point, feel absolutely offended by that point, you lose the whole argument.
I’d also add, if you’re white, you are not having the same emotional reaction to the same degree that you’d have if you were black.
Imagine that you were listening to a man telling you to reject, to tear down, stomp on, spit on a statue of Thomas Jefferson….or Donald Trump.

The large Star Spangled Banner flag that flew defiantly at Fort McHenry during bombardment of 1812. British exhausted their ammunition trying unsuccessfully to destroy the American defenders and were repulsed from landing in Baltimore Harbor.
I visited Fort McHenry not long ago and that Battle was on my mind every minute.
There was nothing so aggravating to the British directing the bombardment as to why this flag still stood despite direct hits. They even switched the focus of all their guns from everything else just to take down that symbol in an attempt to crush the spirits of Americans.

We saw the movie REAGAN yesterday. I highly recommend it. It is historically accurate. The amazing thing to me was how what was going on in Reagan’s day (which I am old enough to remember the events), are SO SIMILAR to what is happening today. Communism. That was what Reagan was fighting and that is what we are fighting. We could learn some lessons from that time. Trump is certainly not perfect, but I think he is God’s man for this time in history, just the way Reagan was years ago. I could always be wrong. No matter how the election turns out, God is always in control, nothing surprises him, … but yes… we are in a FIGHT AGAINST EVIL and we must stand up against it no matter where we are on any given day.

Emancipation Proclamation did not free all the slaves but only those where Lincoln had no power to free any. Example Delaware was enabled to keep their slaves and Lincoln could have enforced such a law. Maryland too
The point was that the Dems could have freed the slaves any time they wanted to before the Emancipation Proclamation, but they fought against abolition for more than 80 years after the Constitution was written, because they were the party of slavery. Lincoln did not actually free the slaves, but his Party did all of the work to try to give equality to black people in the last half of the 19th Century.
Some of them had Noble intentions, but the Northern politicians were trying to stick it to the South and make an example of them for daring to try to secede from the Union and exercise what were their Tenth Amendment rights as States.
The 10th Amendment was amended again in 1875 just to nail that door shut.
It was all about power and money on the politicians part.
And kentucky. Fact is that Lincoln didn’t start talking about freeing the slaves until the second year of the war for southern Independence.
The reason the South has been smeared and smeared and smeared ever since is not because of slavery — but because of Secession.
Only 2% of Southerners own slaves in 1860 according to the US Census of 1860. 2%. 98% of Southerners did not own any freaking slaves. But yes the war was all about slavery. And all those men went to war to fight for the rich planters. Right.

I don’t know why this Trump ad doesn’t get more run. I listen to it at least once per week. It goes perfectly with what you’ve just written, Sundance. My young son loves this message from Trump and uses it all the time.
