Good stuff, Betsy….I would differ with her apparent generalization that (all?) Americans think “death is optional”. I was fortunate to be born into and grow up in a large family, all branches of which made their early and mid-20th century living on simple dirt farms. Death was a part of living where the crops, the farmers, and the animals were concerned. We lived it. It wasn’t denied or thought to be something that could be evaded.
The old Danish Lutherans taught and believed the truth about Jesus, the Christ (John 5:24) and everything we were surrounded by reinforced an acknowledgement of our very basic need for God. That was very good stuff, too!
I understand. Yes, it was a generalization, the contrast of cultures between countries with only the English language in common.
My family on my father’s side were Swedish Lutherans….also farmers. I am unsure whether there would be differences between the Danish and Swedish Lutheranism, but would imagine if there are any they would be minimal.
I was reared in the Episcopal Church before it (my words) fell from Grace. My surgeon father grew up on a farm, served in the Korean war, saw much death, was devout, and served in our beautiful small church as a vestryman for decades.
I often wonder what those who have no belief in a redeeming Christ do when life rounds on them in ways they neither expect or see coming, natural or otherwise as too often occurs.
I think the late Professor Sir Roger Scruton had it right when he said, “Once we came before God’s presence with a song; now we come before His absence with a sigh.”
What we’ve lost as a nation by forces who wish to dismiss His presence as our cornerstone…and who have been tragically successful in great part for too many.
I am hoping with all that I am that we will be able to turn this around. I am praying God’s exceeding patience with us as we can see what we’ve become without Him.

Early on I heard Dave Steward’s (I think that’s his name) audio of the conversation with the (state?) Police after FBI had seized his phone and they had hemmed him in at a convenient store at 10 pm.
