Suddenly an urge to pray came over me, a prayer of gratitude for these surreal last couple of days.

I watched “Hillbilly Elegy” tonight, to get a sense of who this guy was. I mean, a movie about a Republican directed by Ron Howard and starring Glenn Close kinda of raises red flags, but let’s see.
I’ll say that, this movie doesn’t really represent my people at all. The Appalachians. There was no mention of God at all. There was nothing about faith. God and faith are everything to us. Even amid an epidemic of drug use and a lot of the things you see in the movie, which are completely true, there was no mention of church or God. Which makes no sense to me.
In my experience, which is close enough to his and we’re close to the same age and had some of the same family members near enough even though mine were a little further south, the idea of a mawmaw that cusses constantly, a momma that ain’t no count, nobody goes to church, and this theme of JD has to honor family above all yet leaves his strung out mama in a motel so he can go to an interview?
Man, none of that movie made sense. And it’s his book. There was no “moral to the story”. There was no redeeming of anyone, including JD. He basically turned his back on “the rednecks” and went and got a political career. I mean, good for him getting up out of Kentucky or Southern Ohio and not being yet another drug casualty there as so many are, but that movie was basically garbage. Like a lovefest for hating appalachians for the left.
Nothing in it made me like JD Vance. Sure I felt bad for the kid version of him. But the whole thing was a condemnation for what politicians have done to the Appalachian people. And yet they never said that or even hinted to it.

I’m literally included in all of that. But faith is and has always been a major part of life for all of us. We have constantly been pounded with the Hammer of Life™ every single step. But we always have kept God in our lives and I didn’t see any of that in the movie made based on JD’s book. I didn’t even see an allusion to that or any kind of positive message other than “woe is me I had a bad upbringing”.
I’m just kind of left with…this entire move was just whining. I hope his book was better than that, but I dunno. If I told a story of my life, which would be boring, I’d at least point to God for my successes, few as they have been. I don’t get his deal after watching it.

She sees the church as holding people back, but the point is, she confirms how powerful the church is in these people’s lives.
I have not seen the film (Vance’s) but I did read the book some time ago, and there was part of it that gave me misgivings about him, but I can’t remember exactly what it was.
It had something to do with his experiences in the Ivy League, and his feelings about them, and by that time they were well on their way to commie wokeness. I had concerns about his positivity towards that milieu.

Why would I read the book when the movie was that bad?
I’d seen the book pushed by the usual “high society book clubs” as some sort of “lens into the lives of the poo-oor in Appalachia”. Emphasis on the pronunciation of “poo-ooer”.
These bastards have no shame. They don’t care how badly they destroy lives in them mountains. They never cared 100 years ago, they don’t care now. They see this movie like some sort of “cleansing” moment for their constant boot on our necks.
We hate them. We will continue to hate them. JD escaped and he never felt a moment of regret about it because he believes he is better than his own family.
This isn’t “tall poppy syndrome” speaking. He literally went to Ohio to get away from his own people. He didn’t become a champion of his own or anything. He ran.
His demeaning of his own mother does not sit well with me. She may be/was struggling, but for your own character, “Honor thy father and thy mother” It’s one of the ten commandments from God. Release yourself from judging others. Final Judgement

Exactly. He broke a commandment, and after he converted to Catholicism. I’m not like my parents who think Catholics are basically Satan’s church or something, but the guy abandoned his Protestant roots and his family at the same time because his own future meant more than anything else. He didn’t even come back to Kentucky to protect his own. He went to Ohio. He flagrantly chose his own success over his soul. Over his own momma. And we’re supposed to accept this guy? He’ll backstab Trump first chance he gets. The guy was a neverTrumper not long ago.
Many people from Appalachia will disagree with you. I have also heard many blacks equate his story to that of “the hood”. It’s a story about family struggles in very poor areas and how one can overcome. The book was a best seller, way before a movie.

It is another broad scope and view. And where do you live in appalachia? I am in the western end of Maryland bordering all appalachia.
Obviously you got an ax to grind. I read the book and watched the movie. My takeaway is completely different than yours. I just was talking to a friend this morning whose democrat mother told him he should read the book. This guy is a republican and thought his backstory was wonderful. Sorry that you didn’t see it that way. Of course, every time I see your name I think contrarian, whether that is true or not.

The country isn’t polarized enough. The muddle in the middle need to recognize what the left is doing and start conserving America. The 30% on the left are not included in unity. The other 70% should be unified, but unfortunately the middle 40% or so are out to lunch and have been for decades.
That 40% is not an accident. It is the intended target and long-term result of over 60 years of Marxist Critical Theory having displaced legitimate journalism, academics and the so-called liberal arts in the public square.
