One of the Bidenary impacts to economic analysis and/or economic outcome review has been the inability of any government statistical data to make any sense.
Quite frankly, almost every financial pundit in mainstream media pretends the data from the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA), the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) or the Dept of Commerce is accurate. It’s not, and we all know it.
Just like every other institution in Washington DC, the systems of economic tracking have lost all their credibility.
That said, even with all the pretending intended to prop-up the Biden administration, eventually the results on Main Street are so obvious the data manipulators have to quietly attempt to smooth the disconnect. This story below is about one small part of that operation.

With prices rising faster than earnings, the average worker’s weekly paycheck buys 4.4% less today than when President Biden took office. Homeownership affordability has plummeted because the monthly mortgage payment on a median-price home has more than doubled. Three-quarters of Americans now view fast food as a luxury they can’t afford. Gasoline prices are up 46%.
And now, even the job numbers have lost their luster, especially when you consider that millions of those added jobs are from double counting. Whenever someone who is already employed has to get a second — or even a third — job just to help make ends meet, that increases the number of payrolls, without increasing the number of people employed. 1974, after the first oil shock. The economy was disjointed. 1970 was better. We left the gold standard in 1971 and government stealing increased.

I was working during that era, actually started as a kid in the 60’s, and paid cash for college with a summer job in the 70’s. Didn’t have to work during the school year. Had enough left over to save for a house, go racing and start buying equipment for my business.
What was the job? Pounding nails and blowing tarps off in the hot sun at a cottonseed plant as an apprentice carpenter. After that, started as an apprentice machinist at an oil and gas shop. Had three vehicles and a house by the time I was 25.
Who was president when I was in college and doing all that stuff? Carter. I did buy the house after Reagan got in and survived getting shot. IIRC, I had a 12% ARM on it for a mortgage. 🙂
The late 60’s and early 70’s were tough. Plenty of violence and people where I lived were tight with their money. Most were single income like my family was. If I wanted spending money, well I had to work for it. Mow lawns, throw papers, pick grapes, fix engines, you name it. Normal stuff for kids back then. I was doing most of that before I was ten. It was called life.
Yep my first job was part time throwing baled hay on a wagon in 1966 or 67 at the age of 11. I remember getting my pay in an envelope with 6 dollars and 2 quarters 😆
My next job was at the farmers market in the summer of 70 making 75 cents an hour. That summer I saved enough to buy my first motorcycle a Yamaha 60cc for 125.00.

Interesting you should say that. Back in ’72 my Dad was renting a house in Huntington Beach. The landlord told him he was putting it up for sale, and offered him first chance at it. Dad turned him down because he thought it was “overpriced”. The landlord was asking 48k. He moved inland about a mile and got one for 29k. Allres of his life he regretted that decision. Of course none of us knew real estate prices would be so insane in just a few decades.

When Au/Ag ratio gets back below 49:1, then gold is good buy. He prefers 40:1 ratio as most realistic based on known available reserves.

In 1966 I turned 16 years old. I was allowed to go to work. Minimum wage I believe was around $1.26 per hour. I started my work life as a soda jerk at $.65 cents per hour. Our monetary system was then based on the price of silver. Remember silver certificates on our bills? Nixon took us off the silver scale in 1968 if I remember correctly. Previously we were taken off the gold standard by the roaring twenties! (Wilson?) Would be nice to get back on one of those standards again.

A while back, an investigative reporter found out they put the temperature sensors on the exhaust port side of window AC units so they were having hot air blown at them all day.
Putting the CO2 and other gas collectors downwind of active volcanoes and hot springs is another classic scam.
We don’t need temperature sensors to understand that vegetation and animal bones buried under 20 feet of permafrost says permafrost is not so permanent. It also proves that before the last ice age, which no greeniac can explain how it ended, the earth was warmer than it is today.
So if it was warmer than it is today, who the hell do these people think they are dictating today’s temperature is the norm over the previous warmer temps?

I think you may be right, especially if President Trump is re-elected. And I think the “crashers” of the economy will be Blackrock, Vanguard and State Street. These three companies own 28% of the S & P 500. Virtually all stocks are selling off except for the “Magnificent 7” companies.
If a Democrat is elected President, he/she will continue to flood the economy by printing cash. The Green New Deal is keeping the economy afloat but, causing inflation.
If Trump is elected, I think he can solve some of this by radically downsizing government, lowering the cost of fuel, and lowering taxes.

My job is a corporate recruiter so I pretty much live the employment experience every day. When I read about the “job numbers” I am incensed. Anyone that spends 10 minutes on LinkedIn and reads the feed can see the absolute desperation of white collar workers. Daily and numerous posts of people who are literally at the end…about to go bankrupt, about to lose their home and marriages. People who have been out of a job a year+, unemployment run out and savings gone…people who 2 years ago would have had many job offers, people who are in the professional class and find themselves completely despondent. Reading these posts makes me want to cry every day….I see it with my own eyes Dept. of Labor so don’t pee on me and tell me it is raining…. What is happening in our country and its natural born workers is horrible and so so unnecessary…..
All the new jobs around my area have been going to immigrants from the south. Never before seen this in my area, not only that, but most are Govt’ related contract work…. seems Treasonous to me.

Totally agree about good employment in the trades. I live in a blue collar town. Employers are desperately looking for people with experience in the various trades. These are good jobs that pay 70K plus a year.

My husband has been unemployed for 6 months and he is IT Management. I have been doing this type of work for 25 years and I know the white collar job market extremely well. Believe me when I tell you I have never seen anything like this…including when I got out of school in the 80’s and couldn’t find an entry level job myself. It wasn’t this bad during the Obama market or Covid…this is actually frightening to me. These are extremely qualified people who are being pushed out of the market by both AI and international Visa candidates who are desperate to come here and get a Visa then Green Card….DJT limited that HUGELY and made way for a boom for professionals….OBiden has pushed this so far back I pray that DJT has a great game plan to make the economy boom…and quickly

In the college department that I teach in we went for a dozen years not hiring a white male. The odd thing is, the women and black professors come and go, able to move up to dean or some other position within the bureaucracy. Many women have come and gone. Who is steady, reliable, hard-working, and a delight to work with? Men! White men are, in my experience, even tempered, tolerant, punctual, never need to have their classes covered by another. My 30 years in this field have opened my eyes. I cannot deny what I see.

I am a UCF dropout who went into the nightclub/bar/construction rackets.
Unless a person does well enough in the trades to eventually sell and retire or pass the business to their kids, they run the risk of catastrophic injury.
If a person is self employed there are really no safety nets when these injuries occur.
No one really seems to care when you have become no longer economically viable in your chosen path. Now, I am studying to get a substance abuse counseling degree.

One thing a college degree helped with was engineering and finance. Big help. Created my own safety devices and survived nearly 50 years in heavy industry completely intact. My shop’s specialty was hydraulics and those can be powerful devices to save labor and do heavy work safely. Same with overhead cranes. Made heavy fab/machine work easy. Same with cranes on service trucks.
I probably do more physical labor now being retired. Forex, I’ll leave the tractor sitting and do stuff manually now; grab a shovel or push a wheelbarrow or dig that post hole by hand.
Yes, the trades can be tough on one. I worked in nearly all of them over the decades, starting as a carpenter during college. However, if one works smart and stays true to one’s own standards and mission in life, it’s possible to do well and stay healthy.
My dad was a white collar guy who worked for the government and was sick most of my life and died in his 60’s, so no superior genes there. Of course, I wasn’t a WW2 combat veteran either. I can’t imagine the hell he went through over there.

I recruit in manufacturing as a 3rd party. I concur, it is brutal out there. My business is having difficulty. Clients are either not using people like me and maintaining recruiting in house or simply not hiring. It is tight and the numbers have not been real in 4 years.

I saw this happening way back in ithe early 2000s here in SoCal. Back then companies were getting nice tax breaks for taking lazy queens off the welfare rolls, which pretty much pushed out housewives, seniors and students who needed money. I was talking to my boss today asking him about the price of the high tech grinding machines we use to regrind tooling used in the manufacturing of engines. Nearly half a million per machine. But these things are necessary and more than pay for themselves. Without the properly ground tooling, you cannot manufacture engines.
He told me he just met yesterday with a salesman for these machines.
In this economy they cannot give them away.
When heavy industries start pulling back…….everything else does too.

We old timers have been through a few of these cycles. I remember when quarter million dollar CNC machines were selling for 15-20 grand at auction, this back in the early 80’s. In fact I picked up much of the machinery for my business during that period, after the Carter debacle. Bankruptcy auctions everywhere. I sold all my equipment when closing the business in 2020. I was done with the merry go round.
However, I think I’ll pick up a nice small prototyping CNC machining center for the house. I still like to tinker and have 5-10 tons of raw materials left over. The village needs a blacksmith. I’d never do it as a job again though. For free or barter, sure. 🙂
Interesting insight from your boss. Reminds me, I ought to keep an eye out for old tooling and machines that could be refurbished and setup in a decent sized garage for projects. It would be useful to cultivate and build other skill sets beyond what I already work with. If only just as a hobby at least.
