We Spent a Billion Dollars Fighting the Houthis…and Lost-

Why does it seem the Pentagon is far better at spending money than actually putting together a successful operation?
It is reminiscent of a recollection by Col. Harry G. Summers of a discussion he had with North Vietnamese Army Col. Tu: “You know, you never defeated us on the battlefield,” said Summers. Tu paused for a moment, then replied, “That may be so. But it is also irrelevant.”
To great fanfare, last December the Pentagon announced the launch of Operation Prosperity Guardian, a joint US/UK military operation to halt the Yemeni Houthi disruption of Israel-linked commercial shipping through the Red Sea. The Houthis announced their policy in response to civilian deaths in Israel’s war on Gaza, but when the US and UK military became involved they announced they would target US and UK shipping as well.
The operation was supposed to be quick and easy. After all, the rag-tag Houthi militia was no match for the mighty US and UK navies. But it didn’t work out that way at all. Over the weekend the Wall Street Journal published a devastating article revealing that after spending more than one billion dollars on munitions alone, the operation had failed to deter the Houthis and failed to re-open commercial shipping in the Red Sea.
The Journal reported that Avril Haines, the director of national intelligence, recently told Congress that “the U.S.-led effort has been insufficient to deter the militant group’s targeting of ships and that the threat will ‘remain active for some time.’”
Meanwhile, the article informed us that a continued US effort to fight the Houthis over Red Sea shipping was “not sustainable.” Perhaps the most revealing part of the article comes from a Washington military expert, Emily Harding of CSIS: “Their supply of weapons from Iran is cheap and highly sustainable, but ours is expensive, our supply chains are crunched, and our logistics tails are long.”
Similarly, the US military spent a quarter of a billion dollars building a temporary floating pier to deliver aid to the starving Palestinians even though a land route already existed and would have been far cheaper to use. The project was doomed from the beginning, as days after opening stormy weather broke up the pier and washed part of it up on Israel’s shore. The US military managed to gather the pieces together again, but in total only a few aid trucks managed to use it before, over the weekend, the pier was again disassembled for fear of another weather-related break-up.

The whole “world is our oyster” strategy ends when the the Central Banking system is destroyed and debt financing and usury are eliminated as the primary mean for the banking class to cultivate and eat that oyster (you and a compassionate and moral humanity).

Seattle to use illegal migrants to reinforce depleted police force
Seattle has become the latest Dem-run city trying to replace an exodus of police officers with illegal migrants. Washington’s largest city has just 913 cops to serve its 750,000 people after losing 725 officers in the last five years. Now its police department has tweaked the rules to allow applications from migrants who crossed the border illegally as children and are registered on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), or ‘Dreamers’, program.
More than 500,000 people in the US registered under the Obama-era DACA program before it was rescinded by Donald Trump in 2017. While they are allowed to work in the US under a renewable two-year work permit, restrictions on carrying firearms had previously barred them from police work. But in a memo last year the Justice Department stated that ‘DACA recipients can possess duty firearms and possess ammunition as part of their official law enforcement officer duties’.

In my corporate life I learned to double the amount of the hourly wage and add three zeros to roughly calculate annualized earnings; a forty hour workweek adds up to 2080 hours per year.
So $30/hr annualized is around $60k.
Even though I should have stopped being surprised by the Marxists long ago, it still boggles my mind that they just never stop. “Gimme! Gimme!”
It also boggles my mind that we live in a world that apparently features a median home price nationwide , of $425k. $60k isn’t sufficient for living in that world.
Seems to me we are in a world of hurt, being experienced “slowly at first then all at once”.

In 1962 in the City of St. Louis I worked at a religious publishing company, $250/month to type Sunday School lessons for publishing on a manual typewriter. Rent for furnished apartment was $15/week and you could fill grocery bag for around $15.00. We walked to the grocery store because we didn’t have a car.

When I started my trade in Tool and Die, the wage difference between an apprentice and a journeyman was about 6 fold. As an apprentice gained experience his wages increase as did his standard of living. Today the wage difference between an apprentice and a journeyman is less than 2 fold. The journeyman has been hurt the most by the increase in minimum wage.
The problem is people wanting to live beyond their means.

my first “real” job at 13 (babysat from 10 on) was detassling corn at 65 cents per hour
I only got 50 cents an hour, which I split with my sister because we babysat together:)
My first paying job at 12 was moving irrigation pipes across 10 acre potato fields in SE Idaho in 1991. 15 cents a pipe. I moved multiple lines in the morning and afternoon before football practice.
My first job was bringing my uncle squirrel tails. Ground squirrels. They wo eat our almonds. 10$ cents a tail. I had traps and a pellet gun. Before and after school. 40 tails average. RC Cola…..yes.
Pops used to be paid to kill armadillos on Florida ranch land in the 60s. They’d drink beer and shoot hoover hogs all day.
I tied grapes. 10 cents a vine.
I tied tobacco for my grandparents for free.
I bucked hay bales, mucked barn stalls and built fence with reclaimed 100+ year old barnwood because I didn’t want “to go pick a switch” and think about recent events whilst on “restriction”.
I didn’t like any of it at the time, however, I would not be here today without those lessons.

I’m beyond puzzled about congress’s investigation of the origins of Covid. The Worst of Two Worlds.
It looks like John McGuire has won the 5th Congressional District primary in VA over the incumbent Rep Bob Good. With 95+% of the vote in , McGuire has a 327 vote lead according to the NYT.
President Trump endorsed McGuire after Good had endorsed DeSantis. Then when DeSantis pulled out, Good tried to make like President Trump had endorsed him, resulting in a cease and desist letter from the Trump campaign to halt the use of Trump’s name or likeness.
“It has come to our attention that your campaign is producing yard signs purporting to indicate President Trump’s endorsement of your candidacy,” David Warrington, Trump’s attorney, wrote to Good’s campaign. “You know that is false. In fact, President Trump has endorsed your opponent, John McGuire.”
In a close election that may have been all that was needed to tip the election to McGuire.
But we’ll see if by hook or crook a recount gives it to Good. Right now McGuire won by 0.52%, and there is no automatic recount in VA. If the vote difference is greater than 0.50%, the losing party requesting the recount must pay for any recount.

However, you assured ICE the illegal would exit into the hallway where he could be taken into custody).
Then, after you’re caught as a crooked judge, have the denizens of MA pay for your lawyer fees until that ploy is uncovered. After $100k+ was spent, then your lawyer will work pro bono for you for the remainder of your case while you collect your pay pending the case outcome.
The outcome? The feds dropped the case in exchange for Judge Joseph agreeing to refer herself to a MA state agency ‘that investigates allegations of misconduct by members of the bench’.
Judge Joseph let an illegal escape from her courtroom in 2018 knowing an ICE agent was waiting with a warrant to take the illegal into custody. Judge Joseph was indicted in 2019, with the case dropped and her returning to the bench in 2022. As best I can tell, she never lost a day of pay from the bench.

In the Soviet Union, the great lies were that the Party and the state existed to serve the interests of the workers and peasants, and that the United States and its allies were imperialists little better than the Nazis had been in “the great Patriotic War.” The truth was that the nomenklatura (i.e., the elite members) of the Party had rapidly formed a new class with its own often hereditary privileges, consigning the workers and peasants to poverty and servitude, while Stalin, who had started World War II on the same side as Hitler, utterly failed to foresee the Nazi invasion of the Soviet Union, and then became the most brutal imperialist in his own right.
The equivalent falsehoods in late Soviet America are that the institutions controlled by the (Democratic) Party—the federal bureaucracy, the universities, the major foundations, and most of the big corporations—are devoted to advancing hitherto marginalized racial and sexual minorities, and that the principal goals of U.S. foreign policy are to combat climate change and (as Jake Sullivan puts it) to help other countries defend themselves “without sending U.S. troops to war.”
In reality, policies to promote “diversity, equity, and inclusion” do nothing to help poor minorities. Instead, the sole beneficiaries appear to be a horde of apparatchik DEI “officers.” In the meantime, these initiatives are clearly undermining educational standards, even at elite medical schools, and encouraging the mutilation of thousands of teenagers in the name of “gender-affirming surgery.”
As for the current direction of U.S. foreign policy, it is not so much to help other countries defend themselves as to egg on others to fight our adversaries as proxies without supplying them with sufficient weaponry to stand much chance of winning. This strategy—most visible in Ukraine—makes some sense for the United States, which discovered in the “global war on terror” that its much-vaunted military could not defeat even the ragtag Taliban after twenty years of effort. But believing American blandishments may ultimately doom Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan to follow South Vietnam and Afghanistan into oblivion.
As for climate change, the world is now awash in Chinese electric vehicles, batteries, and solar cells, all mass-produced with the help of state subsidies and coal-burning power stations. At least we tried to resist the Soviet strategy of unleashing Marxism-Leninism on the Third World, the human cost of which was almost incalculable. Our policy elite’s preoccupation with climate change has resulted in utter strategic incoherence by comparison. The fact is that China has been responsible for three-quarters of the 34% increase in carbon dioxide emissions since Greta Thunberg’s birth (2003), and two-thirds of the 48% increase in coal consumption.
