Consider this indictment against the backdrop of a totally politicized Department of Defense.
(VIA DOJ – May 31, 2024) – […] As alleged in an indictment unsealed today, from 2020 to 2022, Robert Burke, 62, of Coconut Creek, Florida, was a four-star Admiral who oversaw Naval operations in Europe, Russia, and most of Africa, and commanded thousands of civilian and military personnel.
Yongchul “Charlie” Kim and Meghan Messenger, both of New York, are the co-CEOs of a company (Company A) that provided a workforce training pilot program to a small component of the Navy from August 2018 through July 2019. The Navy terminated a contract with Company A in late 2019 and directed Company A not to contact Burke.
Despite the Navy’s instructions, Kim and Messenger then allegedly met with Burke in Washington, D.C., in July 2021 in an effort to reestablish Company A’s business relationship with the Navy. At the meeting, the charged defendants allegedly agreed that Burke would use his position as a Navy Admiral to steer a sole-source contract to Company A in exchange for future employment at the company. They allegedly further agreed that Burke would use his official position to influence other Navy officers to award another contract to Company A to train a large portion of the Navy with a value Kim allegedly estimated to be “triple digit millions.”
In furtherance of the conspiracy, in December 2021, Burke allegedly ordered his staff to award a $355,000 contract to Company A to train personnel under Burke’s command in Italy and Spain. Company A performed the training in January 2022. Thereafter, Burke allegedly promoted Company A in a failed effort to convince a senior Navy Admiral to award another contract to Company A.
To conceal the scheme, Burke allegedly made several false and misleading statements to the Navy, including by creating the false appearance that Burke played no role in issuing the contract and falsely implying that Company A’s employment discussions with Burke only began months after the contract was awarded.
In October 2022, Burke began working at Company A at a yearly starting salary of $500,000 and a grant of 100,000 stock options. (read more)

From my perspective as a retired Navy officer, I’m glad they’re charging this turd and his co-conspirators instead of letting them off as usually happens to senior officers. I’m guessing Burke is a Republican? Either way, he must be quite stupid, because four-star admirals don’t need to use such obvious schemes to cash in after they retire. Just go work for the MIC.

Retired AF officer with two tours in the D.C. swamp and saw or learned that many four-stars went to work with the MIC at a considerably higher salary than they were collecting while on active duty. I’m retired USAF, and for years I questioned the 50k toilets, the 2k wrenches. Until I understood what was going on with the numbers. Kickbacks, money laundering. That 50k toilet was really only $500, the rext of the money going…somewhere else. It’s been going on a very long time.

I just finished reading Masters of Corruption by Mark Moyer. He details all the ways career public servants in Agency for International Development worked assiduously to prevent political appointees of Donald Trump from achieving the objectives of the Trump Administration. Not only did they find ways to oppose all his efforts, but they decided to weaponize the security clearance system against him, which led to his difficulty finding employment in his field after they got him fired. Their treatment of him reminded me of Kafka: No matter what he did to assert his rights, they refused to give him any adequate explanation of his losing his security clearance and losing his job.
There are many people inside the federal agencies who are determined to work against Trump, and also they have a very anti-American attitude. They tend to want more power and money, and find ways of benefitting themselves and the people in their network. As a result there is tremendous corruption going on, while these people delete the records that would prove that what they are doing is corrupt.
It is mind boggling how much money these people spend on their favorite contractors, consultants, conventions, meetings, overseas travel….All in the service of damaging and destroying America. Some of them give jobs in their departments to many family members!
These people have no allegiance to the citizens of this country. They actually are proud that they have achieved power and lifelong job security, and they intend to use their power against any honest person who might want to function with any kind of moral values. They are proud that they can damage and destroy the Trump Administration.
It is as if our federal agencies are being run by networks of psychopaths. They will ruin you if you try to do right by the American people.
I do not know how this degree of corruption in our federal agencies can be fixed without getting rid of all these agencies and giving the functions to a new much smaller set of agencies and have laws in place that make firing a consequence of any kind of corruption. As it stands now, these people never get fired no matter how corrupt they are. The corruption is definitely present in Department of Defense. But it seems to be there in every federal department and agency!
