There was much said about the potential of “space weather” disruption prior to a series of solar flare outbursts or “Coronal Mass Ejection” (CME) events this weekend. However, despite some of the more alarming predictions, the geomagnetic issues appear to be minimal.
The aurora, essentially widespread ‘Northern Lights’ was visible last night over northern part of the Northern Hemisphere. Canadians, Americans and Europeans were able to see a rare event. Typically, the Northern Lights are centered closer to the geomagnetic poles; however, with the sun storm interacting with the atmosphere the light display is visible further south Friday and Saturday night.

Now, I suppose that these geo-magnetic storms (sounds scary, right?) have been occurring since the beginning of the solar system and I have never heard of someone dying because of them. Weinstein turned on to Davidson two years ago and the two of them completing each other’s sentences in a 2hr echo chamber. If people are really interested in understanding Sun activities and impact on Earths atmosphere and electromagnetic properties an excellent Astrophysicist offers up to day reporting on solar activities – she predicted the GEM storm on Monday, has reported updates and given constant assurance other than possible brief disruptions to GPS and short wave radio signals. In contrast Davidson was calling for FAA to reroute airline flights from the polar regions…FAA beat Davidson to the punch on Tuesday. Sorry for the long post but I’m really tired of a generation of people dumbed down and kept from learning about their world they live in, who thrive on the titillating entertainment of what seems an endless sea of grifters. Yet for all their interest, a real emergency will thrust them into panic making things far worse.

FWIW, we have additional CMEs hitting today, and the Sun hurled an X 5.8 solar flare last night (biggest yet), and it appears to have generated yet another CME. We have not even hit the top of the current solar cycle yet.
Yes, things have held up well so far, thank God.

That said, our energy grid is old, and we have failed to do very much to harden it. It is another complex system without adequate analog back ups, further weakened by moving to reliance on solar and wind, and likely further weakened by DEI and by the loss of a generation of men who understood how to build things.
A Carrington level event would cause harms that have been foreseen by many, including the War College, which wrote a whole white paper examining the possibilities of a Lights Out situation.

They would be right, but in the wrong way. Expect stormy weather in the next few weeks, but don’t fret too much about it for storms are good because they cool the earth. It’s not global warming, it’s global cooling, and it really disturbs the AGW alarmists because they deny that solar cycles have any significant impact on Earth’s climate.
The association of Geomagnetic Storms with turbulent weather has been observed a number of times, most recently in association with the Halloween Storms of 2003 and also after the Quebec Blackout of 1989. The theory is that the charged particles induce cloud formation leading to storms and increased lightning and other electrical phenomena.
I predict a wet and cooler late May and June and a high likelihood of media over-hyping the weather and any negative impacts they can dredge up.
Dr. Valentina Zharkova, a marvelous scientist from the U. of Northumbria, an expert on matters of the sun and its effect on the magnetic fields of Earth, has been absolutely crucified by the Left because she thinks we are going into a Minimum like the Maunder Minimum.

Unfortunately, Zharkova doesn’t address the cloud-inducing effect of ions from the solar wind here, and that is potentially a much bigger factor affecting our climate than the variations in total solar radiance with the solar cycles.

Hi Graham, Nothing was ‘supposed’ to happen. Its wide band of unknowns that could happen. Some fear-monger more, some less.
Watching this for many years, I see this as a data point for aligning my expectations to the magnitude of the event.
Keep an eye out for power outages/gps issues/computer issues/industrial control system failures at least through Monday.
Also, expectations are tricky as Earth’s magnetic field is weaking – adding to the uncertainty.

We are older and have never seen that before. We had to look it up and apparently it happens but is rare.

And, as a reminder, there are many people present in our country who would gladly use a geomagnetic storm as cover to take down the grid. It is a soft target, as demonstrated by the attack on San Diego just using rifle fire a number of years ago.

We had to relocate here from the desert southwest, and never appreciated cloudless skies before. This was the first cloudless night in months, and one of few nights we’ve had unobstructed views of smaller stars (even with our telescope).

At first I thought it was the race track that I can sometimes hear, but when I looked out one could see and hear it.
From what I understand from some of my South Dakota friends it could be seen and heard all the way pas the southern border of South Dakota.
What did it sound like? I am in southern CA and it was overcast last night, but I have had a bad headache the last 2 days (which is unusual for me) and I hear a kind of buzzing sound in my ears.
We had them here in NE Ohio, especially near Lake Erie. My local friends had some amazing Disney-color photos posted on facebook, so I drove Mom 15 minutes from here to the lake to try and see it. The sky and lake were dark, with a little dark gray haze or fog — but a woman standing next to me was getting a pinkish glow on her cell phone camera. It was weird to see color on her phone, but nothing when I just looked at it. (My cell phone does not take good night pictures, and I couldn’t find any night vision setting on it.)
There may have been some places where you could see the light show just with your eyes, but it seemed like a lot of it was visible to many only if you looked at it with your cell phone. It was disappointing for me — I was hoping it would really light up the sky and be visible without a cell phone.
I only saw mostly grey blotches and stripes, saw a red patch a couple of times, saw a green area a couple of times with the Mark I eyeball.
My cell phone showed amazing colors, showed the curtains moving fairly quickly, and I got some good pictures.
This was a lifetime bucket list item, major solar storm auroras. Check! (Got the total eclipse in 2017, waiting for the supernova and the major meteor storm.)

Was blessed with 3 years in Alaska and the light shows every late summer into winter (very random). One September night at work I stepped outside to take a break from a “major mission” and immediately called my teammate out. We were just in time to see the greatest show of northern lights anybody could ask for, 20-30 minutes of constant swirls, streaks, color changes and barrel-rolls that gave us goosebumps on our goosebumps. Colors. Put those two pics together and imagine every gradient between the two.

I’m in apple and cherry country in southern Washington and it was fantastic. The best I’ve ever seen in 50 years of watching for nighttime phenomena. Really nice watermelon colors of pink and green. Splashes of color across the sky and no drugs required. I bet people got a great show up in AK and Canada.

I lived outside of Birmingham, Al as a preteen and can remember seeing the Northern Lights once when spending the night with my childhood friend. Her mother knew, despite the absence of internet, that the light shows probably represented the Aurora Borealis and gave us a quick lesson. No one feared but enjoyed the beautiful skies. Our current political situation makes us interpret things differently. We now have the return of the Cicada. They make a significant amount of noise day and night. Seeing them piled in my dogs outside water bowl, my mind started calling them Locus. It fits our current personal/political scenarios.
