Before getting to the remarks in the video below, about “living through the greatest Western population bust in human history,” let me first bring attention to something I recently noticed.
While visiting Russia, there are several social factors exclusive to this nation. Some of the distinctions are relatively new, (resurgence of religion and faith supported by the state), and some of the developments have been taking place over a longer arc of history, (expanded national population, and family incentives supported by the state).
It might seem like an odd thing to notice, but the number of Russian families with young children far exceeds that seen in any other EU metropolitan area and/or American city.
If you look at the issue from a review of children aged 4 to 10, the difference is stunning. The number of Russian people with children in Russian cities far exceeds the number of Americans seen with children in large urban areas of the USA.

Young men don’t want children either. We have two generations now that don’t view having children as a life goal (Millennials and Gen Z).
And decreasing birth rates have been a problem since the late 1960s in the US – earlier in Europe. I am Gen X and when I was young we were called the Baby Bust generation because there were so few of us. Our Boomer and Silent generation parents chose to have few or no kids in large numbers.
Because having children one can not afford to care for is criminal and uncivilized third world.
I think there are a lot of parents who desperately hope to adopt, who do not want anyone considering their children’s birth parents criminal or uncivilized.
For many, it was NOT a case of “having children they can not afford”, as in “poor people” who nevertheless as mostly single mothers (since the 60’s Welfare act) have lots if kids, because its “profitable” (more bennies) its middle class, that COULD/CAN “afford” to have/raise children, if their priorities weren’t so screwed up.
Your kid doesn’t NEED “stuff”; they need guidance, discipline and love.
Reject the value system of the Jonses, and you can do just fine.

For people actually working, childbirth is much more expensive than it used to be.
There are strong financial incentives for some people to have children and strong disincentives for others. (That’s just childbirth — before the cost of housing, feeding, clothing, and educating the kids.)

I don’t think the word “afford” really deserves scare quotes in this case.
During the Great Depression, who could afford the kids they kept having? Poverty has been the rule in the world. Never have people had enough to have children on a large scale, yet they did it and found ways to make ends meet.
IDT the government was in every area of life criminalizing everything one has to do to survive. Our government would rather have people homeless than living in the shacks I saw as a kid. Children would sell food and drink by the side of the road to support their families. The things people did to survive will get your kids in foster care these days. And yes we were taught not to have children. We were also taught that we would be the first generation to be unable to achieve more than our parents and in most cases not even as much as our parents. Children in the last few decades have been taught that the laws will change to make children pay any debts that the parents have. They come home from that lesson totally demoralized and feeling hopeless. It’s happening too. Even if the debt is old and no longer legal to collect the huge corporations force the children to pay it before they can do business. The behavior of many corporations actually harms the economy because most of us would do almost anything to not be indebted to them. I capitulated on the TV because I have a shut in that needs it but I don’t need or want them. Their time is limited in this house. IMO the telecommunications industry is the worst because they think that we have to have them. Unfortunately eventually that may be true but they need a leash on their behaviors.
When I was preschool age , my two closest in age brothers and I walked along the roads and picked up soda bottles…2 cents apiece turned in. We’d head back to the fishing boat we lived on, if it was indock, or else just hang out on the do is after we cashed in our gunny sad full of pop bottles.
Our oldest sisters would take the nickels and dimes from us and go buy a loaf of bread for us to put mustard on to make a yummy sandwich.
Then we’d take a piece of bread and put it on a hook, catch a needle fish to cut up for bait. Then we’d
cath dinner…a couple nice red snappers.
Yeah, we kids made ends meet, as in get something to put in our bellies.
Sometimes my two brothers and I would dive for FL lobster in the coral walls of the canal.
We also had to work building lobster traps….my brother and I, six and seven years old, had to drop the wooden traps into a fifty gallon barrel of creosote…we stood on bocks on each side of the barrel sos we could reach in. Our arms would burn from reaching into the creosote all day.
These days that’d be against the law for kids to work like that.
It easier to free dive under the fishing boat and scrape barnacles off the bottom.
But, yeah, having g more kids they could pay to take care of, some how us kids managed to feed ourselves. But I wouldn’t wish that on any kids.

Nobody “needed” $300 sneakers. And nobody spent $10 a day on Starbucks coffee or ate crappy fast foods. They cooked healthy meals and obesity wasn’t so prevalent.
Appliances lasted for a generation, not this cheap Chinese crap that breaks every 5 years. I could go on but you get the picture.
Having children is a blessing and caring for them is a choice just like anything else. Don’t let people talk you out of the most rewarding experience of a lifetime because of the “expense.” That’s baloney.

I was a boomer in grade school in the ‘50’s and high school in the ‘60’s and was not hammered with that sh!t.
I was on the NE coast and I definitely got it. Would be interested to know the location that you attended school. I know that other parts of the national culture was coast to coast but correlation of this part of the curriculum with national control of curriculum might be informative. We didn’t have terms like “Critical Race Theory” but it was definitely already happening in the NE in the ‘60’s. College students were being indoctrinated as were grade schoolers.

Actually, I think it’s the pervasive idea that everyone must go to college and then once out, start a rewarding career in your field. By the time women are settled in that career and ready to look for a husband, they’ve already given up 2 or 3 children and are running out of their most fertile years. They’ll be lucky to have just two by that point without extra medical assistance.
This is what is said, but many Mormon and Catholic families have 5 to 10 kids with the first born when the woman is in her 30s. I personally know 8 women who had children after 45 without any fertility assistance. Before 40, most women are able to have children.
I think it’s more common that a lot of women and men are not interested in having children or having more than one or two children these days.
Our parish is full of young children, many families having 4 or more little ones! In our homeschool group many mothers were having babies in their 40’s. In the not too distant future, those of us abiding in God’s care and following his command to be fertile and multiply will simply outnumber those who have turned away from God.

Most of the kids that I knew that came from large families ended up having only 1 or 2 or none (kids.). I look up people or they look me up and the women that did have children have no husbands. Also many people that I knew years ago have embraced homosexuality in their senior years. I never went to college, except Junior College at my expense, so that sure wasn’t an issue for me. I worked since I was a kid. My first job out of high school, my biological mother took all but ten dollars of my paycheck to pay for one rationed meal a day, then told me to buy a car so I didn’t have to hitch a ride the five miles to work and home again, I walked to work and home after twelve hours away.
That’s the way it is for some people. We don’t get life handed to us on a silver platter.

Not to me it isn’t. Reasons, not excuses…having kids should be a smart decision, not spontaneous like getting a puppy from a pet shot, so when you get tired of it, you dump it.
One of the biggest issues that needs addressing is, children don’t have to have everything. A baby needs breastfed, clothing, a clean environment, and love. That is all a baby needs. They don’t need throw away diapers, soy infused powder milk, expensive clothes, and a million toys.
Society has gone off the rails, and people need to be willing to go back to basics.
But they need a hospital to be born in ( which isn’t cheap), a roof over their head, someone to take care of them while their parent is at work, and the older they get, the more they need.
Right, it used to be the mom stayed home while dad worked, then the feminazi’s persuaded women they needed it all, being a mom wasn’t enough. Then the paying for childcare stuff happened, essentially women were working to cover the cost of childcare. All very sad. Vicious cycle.

Nationally, I remember firsthand that everyone was more worried about the Soviet threat of communism with their nuclear missiles. Hardly anyone publicly debated contraception and limiting population growth as much as they worried about surviving a nuclear missile attack.
Civil rights and segregation was also a VERY hot topic nationally during the ’50s.
But t he Cold War with the USSR captured the most attention, especially after the Soviet put-down of Hungary’s uprising in ’56, and Sputnik was launched in ’57. Then Kennedy had to deal with the Cuban missile crisis in ’62. Population growth was driving post-WWII economic growth in housing and consumer industries. All manufacturing was domestic. The U.S. was booming.

I went to school in the 50’s and 60’s in Florida and I heard No Such Things you talk about. In fact it was still expected for females to marry and start a family after graduation. I chose college instead.

Millenial here, with children…so not quite. I have brothers (blood and fellowship brothers) across the country, and we are all millennial with 1-4 children.
Maybe the government has a lot to do with young men not wanting to be fathers! I was a single father with sole custody of 2 small children who never received any child support from my ex spouse. I had my ex in-laws on my side, for God’s sake, and the court acted like I was a drunken hobo who found the kids . That was the best part. When your kids are adolescents and through their teen years, your kids have more rights than you do. The law will take the part of the kids over good parenting. Try, just try, to take anything away from your kids as a form of discipline if your ex is in any way, spiteful. How many states allow a custodial child to sue the parents for divorce? NY State has a program whereby the courts order the parents and children to attend counseling and the counseling is paid for by the parent and that counseling does not end until the counselor says it’s no longer needed or they’ve made their last car payment, whichever comes last. The counseling is done during the work week so you’ll miss at least a half day of work. I lucked out, comparatively speaking, and had to deal with Florida and North Carolina. At the time, the early 90s, Madison County, NC had a sheriff’s home that I utilized for leverage to get my oldest son to shape up or be dropped off there. I had called the Madison County Sheriff’s Department and they backed me 100%. Madison County is the county bordering Buncombe County (Asheville) to the north so it might be “woke” by now? I could see parenting as being near heaven on Earth for the nuclear family but if divorce enters the picture, “parenting” is done at the whim of the state and your children’s wishes.

Eons ago, at the LA Auto Show, my kids, boy 8 and girl 6, kept misbehaving.. nothing but a cattle prod….
Finally I spotted a couple of LAPD officers standing near by, so “I went to the bathroom”… Instead I went to have a little plea for help with children civility from them.
So, I came back, and that was the signal. The cops started walking by and then they stopped
“Young lady, young man, we’ve noticed you two misbehaving… if you don’t stop we’ll have to arrest you and take you in for the night… these cars are very expensive”..
Well, after that the kids were angels. Of course, once they were behaving, I bought them a soda and a hot dog… just to reinforce their good behavior.

My grandchildren are constantly told by me how having a family is one of the best parts of this world. Then I take them to our Catholic Church and sit behind the families that have 4! Our church is full….we are doing our part.
As my husband and I were sitting waiting for Mass to start yesterday, I leaned over and whispered to him how nice it is to see young families with all their children in tow and he commented “it’s a beautiful thing to see”. Thankful to see other like-minded devout families who recognize the sanctity of life.

As with many of these social changes, we accept innovations and within 1-2 generations (10-20 years) we LOSE traditions that were taught, deliberately or just by example, that evolved over 1000’s of years.
As an example, since we are talking about couples and “hooking up” in most cultures up to say,..1900 there was some variation of a recognised process we call “Courting”.
Then, with the introduction of the auto, 2 World Wars 20 years apart which caused generations to feel like they didn’t have the time to Court, we evolved to “dating” and then “hooking up” and nobody even knows HOW to Court, any more and the vitally important SOCIAL/CULTURAL support system that supported and encouraged Courtship, is GONE.
Similarly, if after 2-3 Generations, young girls are being “raised” by Mothers who themselves were brought into this world by mothers that lost the knowledge of HOW to be mothers,…its knowledge thats largely GONE.
An overwhelming amount of our behaviors, we learn from our parents, who learned from theirs, etc. going back 100’s of generations, and SLIGHTLY modified to slowly changing circumstances.
But, rapid innovation has led to LOSS of knowledge/skills, rather than just modification.

In the US, children age 4-10 are closely supervised, kept off the streets and placed in structured recreational and sports programs. The situation is very different from when most of us Treepers were kids. Back then, our neighborhoods, if not our entire home towns, were our playground.
In the 50s..the entire small town where we lived was my kingdom to roam at will. Well..until the streetlights came on at dark and then we all had to beat it back home before Dad started yelling.
It’s not just that we were permitted to roam over a large area, we were never told “don’t talk to strangers” nor were we told that we might be abducted for any reason. Only children of elite wealthy seemed to be targeted for kidnapping.
I rode my bicycle with friends for up to 10 or 12 miles from home, through a state park and into the next county west of where we lived. We did that multiple times. My mother would pack a lunch bag sometimes if i knew I was going to be out all day (in the summer of course). My two-year older sister rode with us at least once or twice that I recall. This was in a suburban area west of Baltimore City, and there just wasn’t much crime against kids back then.
My wife had similar experiences where she lived as a child, northwest of Baltimore. In her case, she and her friends actually walked for miles away from home and then returned the same day. It was mostly urban neighborhoods but again, no crimes involving kids. And her parents were stricter than mine but still allowed their kids a lot of freedom to play over a large area.
Spent many a day traveling two , three, sometimes four towns away by bicycle when we were kids east of Harrisburg, PA. As far as we could travel and back was our world and it was safe!

As odd as it might seem, one of the prerequisites for reversing these demographic trends in the West is to kill off the cities. If you are in religious circles, you still see lots of kids. In my children’s schools, 2 to 4 kids per family is the norm in the less traditional Catholic school and 7 to 9 kids is the norm in the more conservative Catholic school.
These schools play sports against secular and religious private schools.
And these schools follow a similar pattern – 1 or 2 kids per family in the secular schools, 1 to 2 per family kids in the liberal Protestant schools (e.g., Episcopalian), 2 to 3 kids each in the generic Evangelical schools, and 2 to 4 kids on average in the conservative Protestant schools.
But with over 50% of millennials reporting they are atheist or just non-religious, we are going to see massive population declines.

I had 7 kids – 1st one when I was 24 the last one when I was 49 – 4 girls 3 boys
When I had these kids over a 25 year period – My job was THEM and my wife
To this day, I have NEVER bought a new car.
I repaired everything by myself
I built things by myself
I had a roof antenna (no cable) to buy
I was not at the tattoo parlor getting inked ever month
I was not at the Bar with friends
I was not smoking or using drugs
I was not betting on sports teams, much less watching them.
We were not taking fancy Vacations.
I drank water from the faucet.
Bought everything with cash
Saved every nickel I could and worked after work doing repairs for others
I was buying and selling cars
I would always stop for a lawnmower by the trash and repair it to sell it.

Any child that was going to college – I paid for it ( I have 3 left to go and have the money saved for them) but i’m holding on to it now and making them take federal loans..in the event they are forgiven. Why not right?
I paid for weddings and even some down payments for homes.

The fire sales at these peoples houses would be incredable – the things I walked away with for pennies on the dollar and sold were incredible. – But that’s how I did it. I gave up what seems to be a lot…but it was not.

But this is the reason for the lack of Children… By the time these kids are done paying each month for a car and insurance/gas/ phone/cable/electric they are already 1200 to 1500 in the hole and need 20 hours of OT to get to the next paycheck.

We homeschooled our two girls. Wanted a bigger family, but that wasn’t God’s plan (my health issues).
We taught them the value of their time and money. Talked about the “latte” factor. $4 a day with interest over 10 years. We ran a business at the farmer’s market. Worked a lot of logic problems and made up hypothetical businesses (Elvis’ Mortuary and Pizza Parlor was my personal favorite) to learn.
We did it all on one income and made similar sacrifices. It was worth it.

Yup I remember anytime I visited my grandfather in brooklyn – he would say “when you get home..ring the phone twice and hang up” I remember my dad screaming about 30.00 a phone bill – i remember he bought a lock for the dial so we would not use it…Now families have 2-3 -4 phones they are spending 100.00 each on a month and never mind the apps or the price of the phone…. they buy and the storage they pay for from apple every month… it’s incredible

Our PCA church (with a congregation growing as young families join monthly) hosts a Classical Christian school. That curriculum has a fairly high tuition cost associated, in range of $8K/year.
So we also host a free group home school, run by the women whose children are the students. At least two of those women are refugee teachers from the government school system.
My cousins on Dad’s side have had quite a few kids, fwiw.
My children are in that age group, but about a decade ago my wife and I bailed from a suburban town to the country with real acreage. So you’d likely only rarely see us in any population centers, and for good reason.
I’m not old, maybe approaching middle age. However I long made the “I can’t move” excuse. Usually involving finances, but also just that I hated moving after having done so across the country 5 times in about 5 years. However, once I got my mind over it, it no longer get mattered. With God’s help it then happened.
I suggest the above for anyone with an “I can’t” attitude. There is no “I can’t”, only “I won’t”. I say that with much love to my fellow man. Sack up, and make it happen.
