Note that Disney ($DIS) has posted-up multiple box-office flops in a row, with the latest, Wish, being pretty much indistinguishable from having a zero opening weekend. For Thanksgiving weekend, which is usually a good time to release a movie (especially when nothing else high-ticket is running opposite it) that’s a disaster.
Some of this is being blamed on “woke” elements, but the contribution of that is unclear.
What is clear, however, is that American business political leanings, expressed in their merchandising and public views, are wildly out of whack with the American mainstream.
How?
Part of the problem, I believe, can be traced to how we do stock ownership and voting in America. That is, if you own Disney stock outright (you bought DIS in your portfolio) you vote the shares. But if you own them in an ETF, say by buying the SPY or one of the many others in the marketplace you don’t vote the shares — the fund manager does.
This is wrong; it is akin to saying that if you rent an apartment the apartment owner gets to cast your vote in an election. We would never tolerate this. We used to tolerate the gating factor of voting being the ownership of property early in America’s history, and perhaps we should return to that or some other measure that you actually produce net-net from a tax perspective, but transferring someone’s vote to another person on an involuntary basis harkens back to the days of three-fifths apportionment even though slaves themselves had no vote at all and thus such was less of an outrage than what we do today in the corporate world.

I think the original poster was confusing current Disney flops with the Snow White remake. It’s not exactly fair to call a picture that isn’t even completed a failure. Nobody but that director knows what it will be like yet, and they often do reshoots. The film could be reshaped ten times by the time it comes out.
I realize people got bent out of shape because Zegler (probably unwisely) said the 1937 picture reflected stereotypes of its time and should be revised for current audiences. But what would you expect an actor in a remake to say, that it wasn’t necessary? How many versions of Tarzan, Sherlock Holmes, Dracula and Alice in Wonderland is too many? “A Star is Born” has four versions by that title, and many close variants of the same plot. Movies DO reflect the times in which they are produced.
I think the animus people held for her was due not to her being a “diversity hire” (though others were) but due to her astonishingly hateful comments, basically insulting the original movie and all of us boomers who once enjoyed it.

Having previously lived in LA for a couple decades, and known a number of Disney employees, I’m confident in saying the company wants to make money and doesn’t particularly care how. Whatever works. If they think “woke” policies and products sell better, they’ll do that. If they thought MAGA consumers would buy more, they would do that. All entertainment companies try to appeal to wide demographics, but the big target for movies are the under-30s, just as it is for pop music.

Out of those three people you mentioned, only Vivek is Hindu. Haley was raised Sikh and converted to Methodism when she got married. Varadkar was raised Catholic but is currently non-religious.

The government’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic pushed an astonishing number of businesses into bankruptcy. But there’s no denying that there have been some winners in the federal government’s $5 trillion federal spending spree. That figure included $745 billion in direct aid to state and local governments.
Just ask Amy Gentry, an executive assistant to Illinois Emergency Management Agency Director Alicia Tate-Nadeau, who billed the agency more than $1 million since 2020 before abruptly resigning last week. The Chicago Sun-Times reports that between February and August of this year alone, Gentry accounted for some $240,000 in billings, twice the amount earned by her boss. The revelation that an executive assistant had billed the agency as much as $60,000 in a single month appears to have been a source of embarrassment for Illinois officials.
In response to the Sun-Times report, Kevin Sur, spokesman for Tate-Nadeau’s agency, announced that Gentry was leaving and a state employee previously hired for the role would return to her $84,000-a-year post. Normally, a political assistant billing the state $156 an hour to tap relief funds would be quite a scandal. But this is Illinois, where the bar is set a bit higher. Four of Illinois’ last ten governors have landed in prison, and the former House Speaker is set to go on trial.
Perhaps because of this, Tate-Nadeau and Gentry have decided to clam up. Both refused to be interviewed by the Sun-Times, no doubt hoping the story blows over. The Sun-Times doesn’t appear interested in going away, however. “It sure sounds like a grift to us,” the paper’s editorial board commented Tuesday.

The story also demonstrates a gloomy reality: Congress’s $5 trillion spending spree has been riddled with fraud and abuse from the start. Precisely how much money the feds have lost due to fraud since the pandemic began is unknown. Cases of fraud are too numerous to enumerate. But just a year into the pandemic, it was estimated that $200 billion in unemployment benefits went to fraudsters — “more than triple the official government estimate of $63 billion based on the 10% pre-pandemic fraud rate.”

It’s a certainty that Donald Trump will be convicted in one or more of the kangaroo court show trials, probably in all of them.
The only question here is the timing of the inevitable convictions and the resolution of the appeals. Assuming at least one conviction occurs before the spring of 2024 is out, will the entire end-to-end process of conviction and appeal resolution be completed before the November 2024 election, or after?
The author of the linked article wants at least one of these convictions to happen before the election, not after, under the assumption that many people in the swing states will not vote for a convicted felon, even if the conviction is under appeal.
I also think it likely that more fabricated indictments will be forthcoming which will push Trump’s sentencing exposure beyond a thousand years of imprisonment.
What happens next if Trump is convicted in at least one of these show trials before the Republican national convention convenes?
If this happens, I think it likely that the GOPe and the RNC will quickly pass a party rule which states that no person who has been convicted of a crime is eligible to be the 2024 Republican nominee, even if the conviction is under appeal.
At which point the Nikki & Ron team (or the Ron & Nikki team) are put forward as the Republican Party Unity Slate for 2024.
If this is what happens, I’ll be writing in Donald Trump’s name on my ballot — even while suspecting that my ballot might either be tossed altogether or the write-in block for president ignored and/or disallowed inside the counting room.
A “preemptive strike” to the US Supreme Court – which is the court of primary jurisdiction in this case – would side-step a lot of noise. This Court has already ruled many times about the “plenary” powers of a sitting President as well as Former Presidents. These cases are discussed early in every law school. Trump simply needs to ask them to re-affirm what they have already ruled.
This is “election interference” and “malicious prosecution,” both of which are felony crimes. These prosecutors cannot claim ignorance of this long-settled law.
The entire “Article 2” of our Constitution is about this one person. And it is “The Supreme Law Of The Land.”
