I was reviewing a Wall Street Journal article about the Sinai border between Egypt and Gaza and various Western opinion about Egypt’s unwillingness to allow Palestinian refugees to cross the heavily controlled border.
For those who do not know the deep background, the Western media context looks troublesome {GO DEEP}. However, I rise in defense of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, because we have tracked and discussed the issues for a long time. Egypt is in a very difficult position right now, and with Obama/Biden in the White House – the challenge is made even worse. First the WSJ framing of the issue:
TEL AVIV— A diplomatic effort to evacuate U.S. citizens from Gaza faltered after Egyptian officials said they would only allow foreigners to cross the border if aid could pass in the opposite direction.
Egypt’s refusal on Saturday, confirmed by three officials and in an announcement on state television, thwarted the latest U.S. push to evacuate any of the 500 or more Americans in Gaza wishing to leave through the enclave’s southern border with Egypt.
Israel—which has sealed off Gaza’s northern border with a ground invasion by Israeli forces believed imminent—said Saturday that it would give a few hours of safe passage for people in northern Gaza to move southward. A doctor in Gaza said corpses were piling up in the main hospital’s morgue and under rubble from Israeli airstrikes launched in response to Hamas militants’ lightning strike into Israel last Saturday.
[…] Egypt is apprehensive about the prospect of hundreds of thousands of Palestinian refugees being displaced into Egypt, or of getting drawn deeper into the conflict. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi, an ardent enemy of Hamas, has also warned that a mass displacement from the enclave could mean an end to the aspirations of a Palestinian state.
Egypt told the U.S. that it has too many evacuation requests to accommodate U.S. nationals and that it can’t grant passage to one country over others, according to two Egyptian officials, who also cited security concerns related to a lack of screening of individuals. On the Palestinian side, damage from an Israeli missile has hindered access to the Rafah crossing.
Yet, Sisi earlier this week ordered tents to be pitched in the Egyptian towns of Sheikh Zuweid and Rafah, in preparation for potentially having to accept refugees from Gaza. He also ordered the creation of a 8.5-mile wide, 500-meter deep buffer zone in Rafah.
Israel’s military said Gazans could safely travel along two major routes south for six hours before 4 p.m. local time, as its forces prepare for an expected ground invasion aimed at routing Hamas. (read more)
Western media never discuss the extreme lengths al-Sisi had to go through in 2014 through 2017 to clear out the radical Islamists from Egypt. After Sisi kicked out the Muslim Brotherhood (Hamas, al-Qaeda, al-Nusra, ISIS, enablers), he became the mortal enemy of tribal terrorism. The various terrorist elements put a fatwah on the head of Sisi and commanded all members of the Islamic Jihad to target Egypt.
It was President al-Sisi who destroyed all the Hamas tunnels from the Sinai into Gaza, and there were hundreds of them. It took years and was painfully difficult for the Egyptian military to remove the extremist elements, culminating in a heavily fortified border between Gaza and Egypt. For Sisi now to look at the potential of hundreds of thousands of Palestinian sympathizers to Hamas setting up camp in his country, he must have very serious concerns.
The Sinai region is a tenuous challenge already for Sisi, and that was highlighted by the horrific terrorist attack that took place in 2017 in retaliation against Egypt for the border security measures.
Against the backdrop of the first border opening between Egypt’s northern Sinai and Gaza, and against the ongoing efforts by the al-Sisi led coalition to move toward peace between Arabs and Israelis, the extremists strike back in 2017 with a horrific terrorist attack against the Al Rawdah mosque in Bir al-Abed, west of El Arish, the main city in North Sinai. 235 people were killed and hundreds more wounded {link}
It took President al-Sisi years to secure Egypt from the extremist elements and protect the Egyptian people. The fact that Sisi is a singular and respected figure, who came from the Egyptian army to stop the Islamic jihad and the implementation of Sharia Law represented by the Muslim Brotherhood, has always been a problem. With Sisi there is peace and strength; but like Donald Trump President Sisi is one man.
By an overwhelming majority, the nation of Egypt wants Sisi to remain as President, because quite frankly he is irreplaceable. The delicate balance of peace in Egypt rests on his shoulders. Think about it. On his Western border he has Libya in a state of crisis with extreme jihadist elements. On his Eastern border he has Hamas, and now everyone expects Sisi to import a faction of an entire population quite comfortable with Islamic extremism. This is not a good position to be in.
Egypt doesn’t want the refugees, not because Egypt is heartless to their plight, but factually because inside that population of refugees is a radical element that could reignite the Sinai region all over again…. And, if the worst does happen, no one will be there to help President al-Sisi except an already pressured Egyptian military.
Jordan is full of refugees already, and King Abdullah manages his own tinderbox. Syria is a hot mess of factional/tribal extremism, and if Egypt is not careful the Syrian model, or even the Libyan situation could easily be the fate for Egypt.
Hamas hates al-Sisi for disrupting their ability to smuggle weapons across the border. Topping this off, the Obama/Biden administration undermines Egypt at every opportunity. It has always been visible just below the surface that the U.S. supports the Muslim Brotherhood and Qatar; the Obama/Biden alignment against Egypt is just one part of this dynamic.
From the State Dept/CIA perspective, they would enjoy the Palestinian/Hamas sentiment triggering renewed jihadist chaos in Egypt. Again, President Sisi is in a tough place.
I’m not sure how this is going to end, but I find myself very sympathetic to the dynamic that President Sisi is facing. What right do Western leaders have to demand Egypt open their borders to known terrorists?

Jordan kicked the PLO out on Black September (1970). They went to Lebanon and that didn’t go well. I don’t know the fate of the people who elected Hamas to govern them, but it won’t be pretty. Tough.

If Israel actually sends in troops to clear Gaza of Hamas that will turn into the mother of all meat grinders. Col Macgregor reported that Egypt was readying a humanitarian aid convey to assist the displaced in Gaza. He said that Israel threatened to attack the convoy if it arrives at Gaza.
That is not a good look for Israel. As Sundance reports Al Sisi has always strived for good relations with Israel. What is desperately needed is a respected diplomat in a position to take the lead. That person will not come from the West at this point.

If the “civilians” would move south temporarily to safety, Israel could send gas through the tunnels and basements where active fighters hide with their supplies in order to then enter these places to clear them out and destroy them. Bombing the buildings doesn’t accomplish this, only destroys residences and businesses, and experience has shown that sending soldiers into lots of unknown narrow places is a recipe for getting them ambushed.

While I agree with your sentiments on Palestinians mostly, I am one who studies history, and the land was given to the 12 tribes of Israel (called Israelites), of which only 1 at the time was called Judah.
The House of Judah was the southern portion called Judea (not Israel) which split from the House of Israel in the northern portion and was called Samaria, after Solomon’s death and the “Kingdom of Israel” was shattered.
That kingdom (or “house”) is generally regarded as being made up of Judah, Levy & and the remnant of Benjamin.
If we’re gonna cite biblical historicity, then let’s at least get it correct, instead parroting propaganda that has been pushed down everyone’s throats for a century or more.
In addition, Rome didn’t name the area Palestine to insult Israel. Israel did not exist at that time. The area(s$ were known as Judea and Samaria as described above.
After the Romans had defeated the Jewish resistance and removed or forced out the majority of them, Rome re-named the area in reference after what they believed were the remaining population to be Philistines.

Black, God made his land covenant with the descendants of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob—a promise God will keep because God is faithful and cannot lie. The historical facts were recorded in the Bible and also by the historian Josephus.
The ‘blessing’ was for all descendants Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. That would include Ishmael, Abraham’s other 7-8 children mentioned in Genesis and the descendants of Esau, brother of Jacob and progenitor of the Edomites.
The ‘covenant’ of the promise of the land of Canaan is a separate matter. (“I will be your God and you (Israel(ites)) will be My people).
The land was promised to the descendants of Jacob (Israel) thru Moses (a land of milk and honey) for the Israelites (and no others promised) to inherit and hold after his death. Joshua led them after Moses’ death. They were not let in before because of their sins in Sinai while Moses was on the Mountain.
So God did not lie and kept his promise but punished them for 40 years before allowing them to enter the Promised (Holy) Land.
Lots were drawn for the division of the land after entering Cannan. Levy was not given a portion as they were to minister to all tribes. Joseph was split into Ephraim and Manneseh to facilitate the 12 divisions/lots.

I think if you do further research you will find the first reference to Palestine is by the Greek writer Herodotus. Whether he was mostly referring to Philistines or the descendants of the wrestler is lost to history. But it was not coined in Latin.

The population of Gaza is 2 million. How many of these people are HAMAS or HAMAS sympathizers? How can one gauge the sympathies of an individual…not to mention enforce peaceable behavior on the many that are radicalized? Many years ago we visited Jebel Musa (Mt. Sinai, amazing btw) and the incomparable St. Catherine’s Monastery in Sinai (established by Constantine’s mother). Its an odd thing about war in the last 100 years somehow the way it ends has been forgotten.
Flying a white flag and being subject to the victors terms seems to have morphed into the victor being responsible for subjection to the defeated and then apropos Europe and Japan after WW2 completely rebuilding to the victors financial and societal detriment.

In 2008, the IDF put into operation a system to provide automated defense along the Gaza Strip. Once a target is verified and authorized for destruction, operators at the remote command center push the buttons to fire the weapon. In effect, Israel automated its defense by networking three dozen or so remote-controlled weapons stations around the 35 mile Gaza border. As Ilana Mercer reported years ago, “Bluntly put, Israel has deployed gizmos to Gaza; “Robo-Snipers” instead of flesh-and-blood men and women.”
The Hamas attack demonstrated Israel miscalculated placing its security dependence on technology. Drones operated by Hamas specifically targeted the Sentry Tech System destroying the sensor arrays enabling Hamas bulldozers and attackers to safely cross the no-man’s land to approach and break through the fence. The See-Shoot remote command center was virtually deaf and blind — a colossal failure of high-tech security. Any post-mortem done by the IDF on this Hamas attack should look seriously at the military/political leadership’s C4I (command, control, communications, computers, and intelligence) decision-making regarding misplaced reliance on high-tech solutions to security problems.
Interestingly, another Israeli high-tech defense contractor — Elbit Systems — boasts that it is “the leading border protection activity in Israel.” Elbit’s USA branch is based in Ft Worth and operates a $145 million border surveillance program called Integrated Fixed Towers (IFT) along the US-Mexico border. Elbit USA boasts that like the systems along Israel’s borders, IFT provides US Border Patrol “long-range, 360-degree, all-weather, persistent surveillance capability…with a high degree of situational awareness.”

Hamas took out all of the observational and sensor nodes along the border fence and the resulting lack of information at IDF monitoring stations was interpreted by the IDF as a technical malfunction. IDF’s border guards were underprepared, under-trained, and in some case not armed.
Israel’s southern border had a different organization and command structure than found at the more heavily militarized northern border, which faces Hezbollah, a more heavily armed adversary than Hamas. It also really points up a larger problem for all of us: the fact that we have one, perhaps two generations, who have no experience in or understanding of a messy world. Sorry (not sorry), but those “supposed palestinian civilians” in gaza are NOT innocent. Are we to understand that hamas brought in thousands of missiles and tonnes of implements of war without a single civilian noticing? That hamas set up terrorist training facilities, dug hundreds and hundreds of miles of tunnels, and no civilian saw it? The amount of equipment needed and the dirt being moved HAD to be noticed. You would have had to work quite hard to NOT notice what was being done…and why. They civilians were in on it. Maybe not actively, but they helped a little, and at the very least, did and said nothing of what they saw. Hamas did not do what they did unnoticed. They talked, they worked, they moved weapons, they brought in equipment, all under the noses of supposed civilians and not a single one said a thing about it. The civilians fully deserve what they got.
And let’s mention the millions and billions of dollars in aid GIVEN to the palestinians in gaza. Money that was supposed to be for the betterment of all who lived there. Money for hospitals, schools, improvement projects and so on. But instead, spent building tunnels, training camps, and buying weapons. Hamas did not plan for peace, they planned for war…and now they have it. All they can choke on and more.
And of course Egypt doesn’t want the hoards of “civilians” coming over the border. A palestinian civilian is really just a hamas terrorist who threw his gun down. They no more want that cancer coming in, and would benefit from Israel scrubbing that scourge from the planet.
The time is up, radical muslims have pushed us too far. Like the neighborhood bully that has spent year terrorizing everyone, stealing our bikes, and beating us up, we have put up with enough, and it is time to end the bullying once and for good.
