My American friends,
Today is a very sad day for Israel. We had a surprise attack with terrorists from gliders from the sky, boats and ground. The situation is not fully understood yet and there is a lot of media confusion.
Not all is published but there are over 40 dead (probably a lot more), over 750 injured and citizens are donating blood as there is scarcity. And there are hostages. I don’t know how many, Hamas is claiming 35.
They managed to occupy about 7 towns and army bases or a base and at this time about 3 towns are still in heavy combat. I saw footage of terrorists shooting at Israeli vehicles and killing families with children. There are thousands of rockets fired at Israel. I saw a footage of Israeli national counter terror unit negotiating and preparing and assault at a hostage situation in a town.
During the years Israel had rounds of operations on the Gaza area. This one was declared as a war, not an operation.
Israel has called its reserve forces and tens of thousands of soldiers are now on the way to the areas.
We are also preparing at the north border with Hezzbolla to prevent them from joining the situation and there are soldiers moving to the West Bank as Hamas is calling a wide attack. In the past Israel attacked the near areas to the border at Gaza.
I think this time we will have to go all the way in.
And they prepared it so there will be many explosives in the houses and under the roads. It could take a heavy toll from Israel but there must be a response that will be remembered for decades or Israelis will replace this government. Yes we need prayers for the hostages the dead, injured and those who lost family.

Jerusalem Post – The Hamas terrorist organization has taken Israelis captive in Gaza, the IDF has confirmed hours after a barrage of rockets slammed into southern and central Israel Saturday.
Hamas terrorists infiltrated the country and took over Southern Israeli towns, as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that Israel is at war.

At least 100 people were announced dead by early evening and more than 900 wounded by Magen David Adom and the Health Ministry. The number of people captured has not yet been confirmed.

Certainly you, Old Joe and others are correct to some degree. You say remove passions and hatred. Many of us have lived a lifetime watching the on again, off again conflicts between Israel and their neighbors. And I did not say “conflicts” to minimize the death, destruction, maiming and lives ruined. However, I’ll admit that I am predisposed to direct most of my hatred at their neighbors. I cast more blame at the neighbors than I do at Israel. Nothing I can do to change that but I respect that you also have valid points.
When you mention passions and hatred, it brings to mind the fact that these tribes have been killing one another for thousands of years. Needless to say, the complexities of that passion and hatred have proven, time and again, mostly impossible for even our modern world to resolve.
It’s quite doubtful that any of us have the answers either. Appreciate your perspective, Old Joe’s too. May God have mercy on the innocent. What’s coming will be a lot more death, destruction, maiming and lives ruined.

Quick Thoughts on the Hamas Surprise Attack:
– Hamas was too successful. And as a result it has likely authored its own destruction. By blitzing Israel as hard as it did, by doing its worst, Hamas has deeply embarrassed Israel and expended its deterrent. Having done its worst, what does Israel have left to fear?
– Hamas has likely united Israeli public opinion in favor of an uncompromising response, greatly increasing Israel’s social energy for a sustained conflict aimed at the total destruction of Hamas and all other militant groups in Gaza.
– Prime Minister Netanyahu’s initial rhetoric has been suggestive of total victory, but he has yet to spell out Israel’s war aims in detail. Stay tuned . . .
– Israel will not show the restraint it did during previous rounds of fighting (2008/09, 2012, 2014, and 2021), when the objective was to “mow the lawn,” that is, to buy a lengthy period of calm before the next round of fighting.
– The West Bank and Arab areas of Israel proper are wild cards. If they go all in with Hamas, Israeli military and security forces could be stretched to the breaking point. Don’t expect Israeli settlers to show much restraint.
– Hezbollah is not overtly involved in the conflict. It knows that southern Lebanon will be destroyed if it does. This of course assumes that both Iran and Nasrallah care about the preservation of Lebanon’s Shiite community.
– There are no indications that Iran-backed Palestinian Islamic Jihad participated in the Hamas attack. (PIJ is Iran’s most reliable Palestinian proxy.) This was likely due to Iranian restraint so as to minimize the possibility of direct Israeli retaliation against the Iranian mainland.
– Iran is watching the situation, deciding how far it can go in messing with Israel. While Israel is distracted by Gaza, expect Iran to run as many precision-guided munitions into Syria and Lebanon as fast as possible, including the industrial technology to manufacture them in situ.
– Does Israel have the capacity to run a full-court press against Gaza while continuing to Iranian forces in Syria under close watch? Will it continue to use the IRGC for target practice as it seeks to interdict the delivery of Iranian munitions? Stay tuned.
– Once Israel really starts beating the hell of out Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad, Iran and Hezbollah stand to lose credibility if they stand by and do little more than issue anti-Israel diatribes.
– The only country that can make Israel stop – other than the possible exception of the United States – is Israel itself. Biden is boned because of the recent $6 billion payoff to Iran, so expect little effort from Washington to restrain Israel.
– Washington will of course back Israel. The bigger question is how far it is willing to go to intimidate Iran from escalating the conflict.
– The Arab capitals that have normal relations with Israel – Cairo, Amman, Abu Dhabi, and Manama – will make a big fuss, but will do little more than possibly downgrade relations with Israel.
– The normalization of Israeli relations with Saudi Arabia is off the table for the foreseeable future.
– Overall, I expect a protracted conflict that will stress Israel’s military capability and society, but Israel is the stronger opponent in this fight. And Hamas did what it did in a desperate shot to turn its fortunes around.
– If the good people of Gaza have suffered under Hamas rule since the Israeli withdrawal in 2005, they ain’t seen nothing yet.
And of course, the NeoCons in the State and Defense Departments in DC are happy about all of this. I’m sure MIC stocks will jump on Monday as well.
I don’t expect that Israel will require the immediate supply of U.S. equipment and munitions. What Israel needs is sustained U.S. diplomatic support and U.S. deterrence against Iran – which Israel is likely to receive.
After the botched withdrawal from Afghanistan and the failure of Ukraine’s summer counteroffensive, the maintenance of frayed U.S. prestige demands that Washington draw the line somewhere – and that line appears to be Israel.
