Shadow Banning is the term given to social media backroom activity that uses computer algorithms to shrink user account engagement without informing the user. The process involves putting friction upon the account to block amplification and control engagement. The user doesn’t see the process, they just notice a severe drop in the engagement by other users on the platform.
Last year, Elon Musk promised to start letting the account holders see what level of friction they were assigned to by letting the users see their shadow ban status. However, that promise was never fulfilled. Musk was questioned about why the X platform, formerly known as Twitter, has not followed through on the transparency pledge.
Continuing the process of pretending not to know things, Musk says transparency is hard.
(Washington) – The long-hated process of shadow-banning on X, formerly Twitter, soon will change, according to owner Elon Musk.
At the Viva Tech conference this week, the billionaire said he plans to address the issue soon. He said the company is working on a plan that will let people see if their account was affected by the Twitter system.
“Sorry it’s taking so long,” Mr. Musk posted. “There are so many layers of ‘trust & safety’ software that it often takes us hours to figure out who, how and why an account was suspended or shadow-banned. A ground up rewrite is underway that simplifies the X codebase dramatically.”
Shadow-banning is a practice where users have their accounts partially silenced without their knowledge. If users are shadow-banned, they can still post but they will notice engagement drops significantly. Since there is no way to officially know that a user is shadow-banned, the issue has been politicized. Conservative accounts consistently claimed they were shadow-banned for speaking out against vaccines or the 2020 election. (read more)
This statement from Musk follows on the heels of X-Corp CEO Linda Yaccarino saying, “If you are going to post something that is illegal or against the law, you’re gone. Zero tolerance. But more importantly, if you are going to post something that is lawful, but it’s awful, you get labeled. You get labeled, you get deamplified, which means it cannot be shared, and it is certainly demonetized. … So, they [advertisers] are protected from the risk of being next to that content.”…
It doesn’t take a deep thinker to understand why X-Corp (Twitter) would not want users to know the reason for their shadow banning or deamplification. Once people become aware of the content they generate that assigns them a label, the control units within X-corp then need to justify their labeling. Transparency runs counter to the intentions of those who control information; that’s why Musk has never followed through.
In the bigger picture, there are legal ramifications when this shadow banning, labeling and definition system is rolled out for the entire North American internet. This is the conversation taking place now in the closed-door meetings of DHS and the various organizations conscripted to develop the process.
Elon Musk is not John Galt. Remember that!
Elon Musk has one prism that is at the forefront of his decision making, money. From my calculations, there are less than eight weeks remaining before Musk and Yaccarino need to go back into the capital markets looking for additional funding. Watch what happens over the next two months.
I’ve said from the beginning: Musk is not your friend and is not to be trusted. He’s had nothing but excuses for why he can’t do, what he said he would do.
magicJack Musk still hasn’t removed my dormant account from a decade ago.

I sure wish Musk would spin off the environmentally devastating electric car boondoggle, leave government censorship to the government, and stick to building rockets. He’s pretty darn brilliant in that niche.
I have no idea from whence Elon appeared.

Over complicating the code is intentional, it makes it difficult to haul in the systems workings. It doesn’t prevent reworking, but it is one big disincentive. What he will or probably is running into is redundant code where the redundancies are linked to critical structural code. This was done to protect the systems mission. Information gathering.
Information gathering is the goal for all businesses on the internet. If they don’t have the financial capacity to gather all of the information for themselves, buy the information most valuable to their own business from the big data collectors. This has actually been going on since long before the internet, when grocery stores discovered who bought their products and when by recording sales data on paper records and building personal files on the purchasers. They learned about the buying habits of all of their customers and used that data to pander to large groups of customers through direct advertising. The personal touch, if you will.
To provide individual purchasers with bargains on their purchases, they required the customer to fill out personal data forms for memberships in order to qualify for discounts. A win for everyone, eh? The consumer gets lower prices and the seller gets to sell that consumer’s personal data to every other seller who might want purchasing information supplied by that customer. I was almost alone in my opposition to this practice. Then the Internet came in and the norm for every transaction a consumer makes in any store and all of the data is shared by all of the participating online companies. For a large fee, of course.
Facebook turned social media into a huge worldwide marketplace for new personal data about all of the participants in that scam called a social club. Never mind that people could build personal profiles that were completely different from their real personalities, sort of like high school kids will try to do through gossip in the hallways between classes. Kids were the first to buy in to Facebook because it was fun and they had no clue what could be wrong with it.
Now, the corrupt Bureaucratic State uses most of this data to root out opponents of Big Government as almost half of the GDP is generated by people who either get their paychecks from the Government or are contractors working for the Government. The future is bleak with Big Government in control of the pocketbooks of most of the population. This means there will be no more elections that matter as more people realize that they are already servants of Big Government and must do whatever they are told, including line up for untested vaccines that don’t work during a plandemic. The worm has turned and our Feudal Masters are back in charge.
Sorry I went on too long on, but this is what happens when old guys get to tell you some of what they have seen.
Thank you! Quite excellent.
As you point out, the American economy is at that 50% level, a fact that I have often referenced by calling it “the fifty percent world” in which the government originates half of all purchases, either merchandise, labor or services. And all investments, private or governmental, have only a 50% chance of succeeding, and wherein political campaigns, and umpteen other undertakings, have only a fifty percent chance of succeeding etc. etc.
Needless to say, a 50% world creates enormous doubt and uncertainty, and it clearly doesn’t represent the natural order of things. Many activities and choices in life must be considerably above the 50% level for people to act. It’s hard not to implicate the woke culture that pursues its idiotic notions of equity and equality given that wokeness throttles the achievement of excellence, either personally or in others.
Recognition of excellence reduces risk in all human activity. However, if excellence is discouraged or outright squelched, then mediocrity reigns and risk rises.
It’s time to shed these infantile notions that highly talented people take more from society than they give. Life is really like a relay race. When the baton (money, employment) is passed to a faster runner, the collective team profits and wins the race. So it is in life. If more money passes through the hands of the highly talented, money and opportunity grow by leaps and bounds, and working men and women at all levels enjoy higher standards of living.
But wokeness breeds mediocrity, and ultimately societal failure. And that’s precisely what a fifty percent world brings.
“Come forward, then, and give us the aid of your talents and the weight of your character towards the new establishment of republicanism.”
–Thomas Jefferson to Robert Livingston, 1800
Thanks. A more concise discussion of my main point. Old guys are just too slow and make too many typo errors, but once I was one of those highly talented people. I have watched how the Oil & Gas industry has been slandered and lied about since I was helping produce better geophysical data to use in exploration.
The oil & gas industry was the greatest and possibly the most ethical work environment I could have landed in after getting my degree in philosophy at a third rate University. Now, the 50% government is focused on a plan to steal this industry from the private sector on the basis that the Government owns the resources of the Country of We the People, and most of the Country believes greedy oil companies deserve it.
I can’t fix stupid, by I can say “I have told you so” to almost everyone I have ever known. The private sector economy, where it has not been hampered by Government control, built this entire damned Country. This while the Government has given us nothing that has ever turned out to be worth a tinkers damn to us. And yet people trust them. Again, I can’t fix stupid.
Big Government Bureaucrats, spending our tax dollars like drunken sailors, have even made it legal for themselves to have labor unions and the people paying their salaries have had no say in how that will come out. Government Labor Unions are like the proverbial two wolves and a sheep discussing what is for dinner, and the taxpayers are the sheep.
Most of what has to be done will never get done because we just can’t fix stupid.
Complexity is increasing everywhere, and is being used to hide and effect growing evil machinations in many places.
One example:
https://theconservativetreehouse.com/blog/2023/08/16/the-shadowbanning-of-the-united-states-internet/
And don’t forget the 100% surveillance state: The US bloc (+Five Eyes), China, pretty much all “developed” nations.
Another example:
Bio-pharma, and the plandemic and coerced genetic manipulation shots: This is only getting started, with many more human (and meat animal > human food) genetic manipulations coming.
https://brownstone.org/articles/the-vax-gene-files-have-the-regulators-approved-a-trojan-horse/
The climate change canard:

And of course, government bureaucracy itself, and law(fare).
And now, tied to all of it like a developing node connected to peripheral nerves: AI.
The complexities are geometrically multiplying, and with this the evil. It’s like a global cyborg. The Second Beast of Revelation?

I can never see myself drive gas-engine ever again.
It’s not for the environment. It for the pleasure of driving it and the savings it brings. Had it since 2020 and never had any issues.
I have a radical vehicle that I want to build, in my dreams it seems, but it would be ideal to be electric simply for the performance and powertrain size aspects.
Being meant for playing on the street and in the curves, the limitations of electric would be of little concern.
It’d still need a fireproof garage with self extinguishing features though, that’s a problem we will see reflected in insurance rates in time.
Jack Smith received from Twitter detailed information on millions of Americans who interacted with the Trump account since October 2020. Interactions include Likes, Retweets, Mentions, Follow’ing .
This is unspeakable. It is as if the IV Amendment does not exist.
Yet, hardly anybody talks about it.
The warrant (https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/23910919-warrant-for-twitter-in-trump-case) was signed by Judge Beryl Howell, and survived the appeal by Twitter.
The Judge knew nothing about Twitter. She asked Twitter’s lawyer how it makes money without having credit cards of its users.
Apparently, they also wanted Trump’s credit card number.
This is Hitler Germany with armed citizens.
Among the demands in the warrant: “all lists of Twitter users who have favorited or retweeted tweets posted by the account, as well as all tweets that include the username associated with the account (i.e., ‘mentions’ or

All contacts and related sync information, and
All associated logs and metadata“

What is he currently seeking regulatory approval for?
leverage with Twitter to get it approved. Dont approve it, he does this with Twitter.. Does approve it, he does that with Twitter.
I wish Elon would realize that what the market is starved for, and hence would provide the most value added, and the most opportunity for profit, is free speech, with no partisan censorship or suppression whatsoever.
Civility, okay, but none of the lying “disinformation” garbage. The only side that ever wants to censor is the side that does NOT have truth on its side: truth tellers always want to have the debate and expose the ignorance/stupidity/lies of the other side.
And no DIE anti-values.
D = judging people by their skin color instead of their individual character/merit.
I = no freedom offending anyone, which means no freedom of speech, because everything offends someone, and it also means tyranny of the minority, because when everything offends someone allowing any speech at all means giving one side’s offense priority, and under DIE that automatically goes to the tiniest minority, on the grounds that it is “most vulnerable. Good on Ramaswamy for noting yesterday that trans ideology is trying to impose a very obvious tyranny of the tiniest minority.
E = No judging of anyone on merit (since, like protection for individual liberty, judging people as individuals is a white invention, and hence constitutes “white supremacy”), requiring instead that everyone be judged first and foremost by skin color. (D with a CRT justification.)
Posting that on Twitter would get me shadow-banned, and I presume it already has, that and many other simple, honest, and correct statements about leftist evil and stupidity.
As a paying customer, this annoys me. I signed up for a blue check to help support Elon’s efforts, and I urge all conservatives to do the same. That would be worth more to him than advertising, and he would be putting it at risk if he lets commie hags like his new CEO shadow-ban us to appeal to garbage leftist advertisers.
He is about to lose me, for example, if he allows Twitter to continue much further in the censorship direction.
Elon has to look at the bottom line. I have no problem with that. But I don’t believe he is looking at it correctly.
One other piece of advice for Elon: drop the absurd “artist who used to be known as Prince” non-renaming of Twitter.
“X” already has many other meanings, including as a generic placeholder for variables to be filled in later. It can’t serve as a stand-alone reference for short posts on a particular social media website. Nobody is ever going to refer to a Tweet as an X. Not going to happen.
So he now has a product, Tweets, that no longer has a noun by which people can refer to it, when the whole point of the product is ease of communication! It’s company suicide, for what seems to be no purpose beyond Elon’s comedic belief that everything is better with an X in it.
I propose a competition. Who can come up with the best substitute name for Twitter, Tweets, Tweeted and Tweeting that has an X in it, so that the X can be capitalized to represent Elon’s company name, along with his belief that everything is better with an X in it?
Elon needs this. Otherwise X is sunk.
This is for you Elon:
I propose FraXtal, FraXt, FraXted, and FraXting.
Fractal is good, but everything is better with an X, right Elon?
I’m considering going with Face-X.
If he doesn’t like the association with Zuckerfreak, perhaps he will reconsider emulating him.

Again, the richest man on the planet is doing a “whore dance”.
I’m not as intelligent as some but this is the most small minded thing I’ve read in a while and why I don’t comment often
he is allowing a government that is destroying our way of life daily, to hide its dirt, to maintain the twitter company, so he can leverage it over his regulatory approvals coming up.
small minded or simple minded.
Your way of life? Interesting.
I’m not on twitter, my way of life hasn’t changed. In fact, when I look at my life experience it’s pretty good.
The only time I even remotely feel “bad” is when I start worrying about something I don’t even actually perceive in my life experience but hear or view something going on outside of my physical awareness. And that is the real psyop.
You don’t actually KNOW what is going on outside of your physical awareness. Everything you are reading is the projection of someone else’s experience.
And the truth is, your life experience is directly tied to your emotions, which you have control over. Bad life experience = poor connection to God, lack of disciplined mind.
This blog is an example of the psyop. Everyone in these comments reads a doom and gloom article then starts feeling bad and seeing “others” instead of brothers, start fretting and worrying about things you have ZERO control over and then you find confirmation of the doom and gloom in your reality.
Know ye not you are temples of the one living God? And you think Twitter can destroy the country? Lol. Well if you believe it, it’s true.
God commanded you to be fearless and joyful. It’s all there in the Bible. A man sows day and night and he doesn’t even know it.
Simple or small minded?

Nah pretty sure all search engines can be accessed.

I mean I get that govts regulate what people can access but when Tucker Carlson can stream his show on X (and couldn’t in twitter) that contradicts this whole Musk is a censoring
Musk doesnt want tool like a censorer…..

I don’t understand why people think it was so good working a thankless job for peanuts for 30 years so they could spend the rest of their withered broken lives doing mundane things.
Why do people accept that we HAVE to use the fiat money system?
Why do people think their roth IRA is the most important thing when this already tryannical govt can destroy those peanuts you saved whenever it wants?
All of this has happened because the so called patriots allowed it to happen.

I’m projecting that billionaires might be motivated by greed? I thought this was fairly obvious.
Or that musk has an ongoing business relationship with gov/intel? Also obvious. But maybe I’m wrong.

I am not shadow banned from Twitter. I have been permanently banned.
I have no idea what I have done to deserve this, since I have never posted anything on Twitter. I have applied for reinstatement, but each time the ban is upheld. Now all I get is bot reply.
I have asked why I am banned, and get no answer other than that I have broken one of their policies. They don’t say which one. I have read that you can review your posts and maybe see the policy you have broken, but I don’t have any posts, so that is out. I cannot contact anybody at Twitter since I can’t post anything.
I would like to know what other steps I can take, but nobody knows what else I can do. If anybody has any suggestions, I’m open to them.
Same!

Applied to be reinstated days before Musk took over just to see what happens.

If the other option is going bankrupt and losing $40B then what surprises anyone that these are his decisions?
Of course Musk’s prism is money. It’s $40B of money. I mean, is anyone here going to lie to themselves that they would let lose of $40B if they had it?
It’s a tight rope he has to walk or lose $40B on principle. Which also means he’ll have to sell billions of his positions in Tesla to payout loans.
Musk isn’t John Galt, but John Galt wasn’t on the brink of losing his company and possibly others; within 8 weeks.
I don’t put my trust into Musk, but I can understand the position he’s in. If anything, it gives a reasonable explanation for his decisions that otherwise I’d abhor.
We here are knowledgeable beyond most people because of Sundance. Do you think Musk has the time we have, or Sundance has, to delve into the weeds to understand the intricacies of politics and corruption? I mean, he’s only running Space X and Tesla and engineered the technology that seemed science fiction only 10 years ago.
Twitter (X) is far from perfect, but there is a noticeable difference than what it was before he took over. Perhaps if he manages to solve his $ issue, things will be starkly different. But as an entrepreneur, he’ll have do with the hand he’s discovered he got. I’d give him some leeway until the $ issues go away.
Pretty sure Musk took out a loan homie. If it doesn’t work out it doesn’t effect him at all. Again, you think his life would really change if he went from 240B to 200 or even 1 billion?

Oh, and that is not an oxymoron.
How about The Wild West, Elon?
Or are you just too limp?
I think your take on Musk is incorrect.
He’s fighting a complex battle on enemy turf. Yes he bought Twitter but that’s like buying Belarus; it has systems and personnel in place that were installed by natural enemies to his cause. The grand purge was a good start but that mostly affected the rank and file. The comrades of James Baker are many and hidden, elusive targets. Musk can only spend so much time on this one company of his portfolio. Jaccrino is a strategic hire who A) said the right things during interview and B) satisfied the WEF to keep them at bay for a time.
I applaud him buying time, and playing the long game to win.
All I can do is compare Musk’s statements and actions from before he owned Twitter, to his statements and actions regarding Twitter. You keep reading intent into statements that his history doesn’t bare out. His “sorry this is taking so long” statement is literally what he’s known for in the industry. He always sets and misses aggressive deadlines, to the point of saying “we make the ‘impossible’ merely ‘late’.”
1. Musk loathes the corrupt US government for personal reasons. Don’t underestimate that real sentiment.
2. Musk has an obsession with finding and exposing the truth about the universe.
Btw, I called out the “can’t share ‘lawful but awful’ content” statement by Yaccarino, and then Musk did less-than a day later, clarifying that it can be shared.
I’ve been on Twitter (X now) for 14 years. There was a time when my impressions per month ran 400,000 t0 500,000 per month. My followers have ranged between 7,000 and 8,000 for the past 10 years.
At times they externally (outside of twitter) filtered me, blocked me from posting almost anything.
When Trump took over the company that eased up a lot and the #ComDem_Troll packs vanished. Now they come back when they (people outside of Twitter) turn them lose. Flooding well known officials with garbage tweets, covering real comments with noise.
Now my monthly impressions are running around 12,000 per month. But for past month my number of tweets flatlined, my profile visits flatlined. I watched the monthly stats for a month of this and suddenly the only data in my analytics are the Tweet Impressions and Followers. All other data vanished from the screen.
Now I see:
