But most of them weren’t detectives, so no reason to have seen the laptop’s contents in the first place. Secondly, no trained cop kills themselves over pictures/video they see related to cases. Many of us have seen Nazi Holocaust, “killing fields” or torture slaying photos/footage, all of which has to be more disturbing than anything Weiner had. One might lose sleep, but you don’t kill yourself over it. That’s like a bad variation on Monty Python’s “deadly joke” skit (reading or saying it makes you laugh yourself to death).
Police suicides is an old, old problem. The pressures and demands of the job breaks up marriages and leads to dependences on alcohol and prescription drugs. In big cities, there’s pressure to take bribes and look away from internal corruption. If an officer seeks psychological help, they are viewed as weak by their own coworkers. Depression over dilemmas like losing your family is what leads to suicide, not “I saw this terrible thing on somebody else’s computer!”
