If you have been following the story of a missing deep water tourist submarine run by a company called OceanGate®, perhaps this part of the untold story might provide some ironic context for the current crisis.
“The search for a missing Titanic tourist submersible continued Wednesday as experts fear the watercraft may have only a day’s supply of oxygen left” (more).
The CEO of OceanGate, the company that has created a tourism industry around underwater exploration, is a man named Stockton Rush. Two years ago, Mr. Rush was interviewed about his company and how they operate; his outlook on the personnel he hired might explain the crisis.
According to Mr. Rush, he intentionally did not want to hire a certain kind of submariner expert for his corporate endeavor, because that would only bring ex-military submariners into the company. In his own words he explains how he did not want to hire “50-year-old white guys“, and instead preferred a more diverse and younger workforce to represent the operational face of the company. I worked with the Lt. Commander in the attempted rescue operations for the Thresher. It has haunted him his entire life. There is not a submariner alive who doesn’t know about the Thresher.
With metal submarine hulls their collapse makes a crunch sound which can locate them by triangulation from fixed naval microphones on the oceanic shelves. My dad ran part that program in the 1960s and 1970s, very secret. He would have been part of the team locating the Thresher.
Program details leaked to the Washington Post and were published in the mid or late 80’s.

No. That was not her role. She was neither pilot or mission commander. She was a mission specialist. In addition, the space shuttle was a more complex machine by orders of magnitude that this submarine. Comparisons of the two are not well established
Christa McAuliffe was assessed and trained to perform her duties on the mission. The competency of the crew did not cause the Challenger to explode. Systems and materials can fail under extreme conditions. I think people need to realize that risk can involve death. The commenters on the heavily censored DailyMail articles on the Titan are asking why they didn’t have a contingency plan – as though one can exist for every variable under extreme conditions. I do not think the CEO of Oceangate was on a suicide mission, but his own words highlight that his priorities were misplaced. I have not read any articles that state how the Titan is evaluated and tested before and after each descent to 12,000 feet under the water to determine the integrity of the vessel. Maybe the CEO should have discussed those processes instead of making racist statements about his hiring practices. As it stands, Titan is just a diversion for bored millionaires and will not elicit the national pride of shuttle missions like when Discovery launched the Hubble.

Reminded of a Law in Az., where flashfloods are common: if people stupidly try to drive across a flooded road, and need rescueing, a law dubbed “the STUPID motorists law” says the fire dept can charge them for the rescue.
People are charged here in Colorado for life saving rescue attempts in the mountains by counties.
They usually don’t pay but they can be charged.
The rescue efforts can sometimes cost hundreds of thousands of dollars because some idiot got lost in the mountians during the winter and gobs of volunteer rescue workers must get out to find them before lost idiot freezes their rear ends off.

I worked in this undersea technology arena for decades in a support role. The “50 year old men” and some much older and younger were tops in their field.
