According to News5 Cleveland, one person was killed, and more than a dozen injured when the I. Schumann & Co, brass and alloy manufacturer plant exploded. Video footage shows the aftermath {Direct Rumble Link}
News5 – Authorities responded to a manufacturing business near Bedford Monday afternoon after a massive explosion caused fires and blew debris over neighboring businesses, streets and cars. Multiple injuries have been reported.
It happened at I. Schumann & Co., located in the 22500 block of Alexander Road in Oakwood. The business is a brass and bronze alloy manufacturer.
The company released the following statement about the explosion:
“An explosion of unknown origin struck our Bedford, Ohio facility today resulting in injuries to employees and significant damage to the facility. Our efforts now are focused on supporting the first responders who came on scene quickly to help our employees. The safety and health of our employees is our top priority and we commit to ensuring they receive the medical care they need. We will work alongside investigators in their search for answers as part of our commitment to Northeast Ohio where we have been operating for more than 100 years. Our thoughts and prayers are with our team members and their families at this difficult time.”
It’s unclear what caused the explosion. Witnesses told News 5 there were two explosions. A small explosion happened first, and a second, stronger one happened around 2:30 p.m.
Authorities said there were multiple burn victims taken from inside the plant to a nearby hospital. One person was taken by LifeFlight helicopter and flown to a hospital for treatment. There were at least 14 people injured in the explosion. One person, a 46-year-old man, has died, according to the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Oakwood Fire Department officials said the cause of the explosion is under investigation but called the facility a “relatively safe plant.” (read more)

Foundrys are, by their very nature, a hot, dirty place. Not a glamorous place to work. This is the type of business that’s at the very core of an industrialized nation’s economy. Also, scrap with an air pocket or internal mositure will cause an explosion if put into the molten metal. Also, molten metal flows into places water won’t. A large spill in the right conditions could cause a problem.

As someone who has been in several steel foundries (mini-mills), let me say with some authority there is no such thing as a “relatively safe” foundry. They are about as scary and unsafe as it comes.
There is a reason that deserters during the Civil War were given the choice of being hanged (or shot) as a traitor, or working in a metal foundry. Either choice was a death sentence.

Miles of train cars full of flammable liquids just happen to be ‘poised’ inside the heartland of one of America’s biggest sources of nuts (almonds, walnuts) and there’s also lots of cattle and pristine ranch land there.

They are a recycling operation. They collect copper alloys from regional centers, sort and make ingots and raw brass and copper materials. They do not make finished products. The process involves lots of gas furnaces and heat. Machinery, especially older machinery, will have oil leaks. I have worked in industrial facilities for 40 years. Fires and explosions have always happened. Thankfully they are rare. My specific area of expertise is machinery failures and failure prevention. Most industrial facilities operate just a few combined mistakes away from tragedy. There is a reason much manufacturing has moved overseas and the inherent danger is one of them. There are some processes like electronic manufacturing that is almost impossible here because of safety and environmental rules.
I did a quick mental inventory, and in my 40 years, I can remember a dozen facilities with severe fires or explosions just in places where I have worked. Almost none make the news unless there are fatalities. For every single one, the cause was determined and corrected. None were sabotage. Maybe it is different now. Maybe there is just an awareness and it makes the news.
Like I said, I have been working in these facilities over 40 years. I do not feel in any more danger now that I did when I started. If anything, places are safer.
