The softness on China began in the Clinton years. I did IPR enforcement for US Customs for about 20 years, with a topnotch team. China is about 99% of the problem.
But it was a constant political battle within our own agency, and from certain members of Congress. Over 20 years I participated in probably a thousand seizures of Chinese counterfeit or piratical goods that were significant enough to warrant Federal prosecution. How many were prosecuted? 2. Just 2. One guy fled the country. The other guy was sentenced to 5 years, but convinced the judge he was dying of lung cancer so he served no time. 10 years later he was still alive.
Another example: when Customs caught Chinese high officials smuggling military grade weapons into the Port of Oakland, the Whitehouse jumped into action to shut down down the investigation. (Try querying Operation Dragonfire, US Customs, Port of Oakland, weapons seizure. Still might be something left on the internet).
Don’t get me started on Chinese transhipment to evade textile quotas, false claims of GSP, fraudulent invoices, fake bills of lading, evasion of antidumping duty, dangerous toys, contaminated food products, quack medicines, and hundreds of other scams, many involving Chinese state-owned companies.
No interest whatsoever.

The Speaker of the House is the chief fundraiser for the majority party. This means long nights with lobbyists who want things done. If they don’t get results on their money, the money dries up. Kevin McCarthy is good at fundraising. It is how you rise to Speaker. Our system is broken. The idea that you can put an honest MAGA conservative in as Speaker would be a short-lived victory. That person would fail at fundraising, and the House would be lost. Sorry for the hard truth, but that is the way things are.
Having said that, I believe it is possible to put in an excellent fundraiser that is not beholden to the deep state. The best idea I’ve heard on that is Devin Nunes. I doubt he would take the job.
Or we could try something different. A strong Make America Great Again speaker, working hand in hand with President Trump raking in millions in small donations, and then giving the people who make those donations tangible results. Maybe you can’t imagine that, but I sure can. I’m not saying cut out business.
