Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and the lying liar who lies, Charlie Crist, held their one and only debate last night. Of all the gubernatorial debates so far, this one was probably the best. Thankfully, DeSantis won the debate on substance because Crist just sucks. However, DeSantis flubbed the most predictable question that was asked.
Every Floridian should vote for DeSantis, because Crist is just an unbearable alternative. That said, the insufferable Charlie Crist asked Governor DeSantis to commit to a four-year term in office and promise the Florida voters he would not abandon his state to run for the GOP nomination in 2024; effectively making DeSantis only a six-month reelected governor because national campaigning will start in June 2023.
It is true, the question should have come from the moderator, because it’s a transparently obvious and predictable question. However, regardless of who actually asked it, the non-response from Governor DeSantis was telling. WATCH (just first minute):

A few things about that non-response are remarkable.
First, even a middle school debate coach would have known that question was likely in the debate. The fact that DeSantis did not have a well-rehearsed and prepared canned answer to the question is a reflection of stunningly poor debate prep.
Second, the evasive and non-truthful answer he did give, totally avoiding the question, shows the incredible weakness within a candidate that is a specific outcome of a lack of honesty. That response is also reflective of why Donald Trump wins every debate. Trump wields truth as an effective weapon.
HONESTY – Ron DeSantis could have said, “Charlie, because of my successful leadership in the state of Florida, there are a lot of people who want me to run for the GOP nomination in 2024. There are also a lot of people offering money as an incentive for me to make that decision because the current state of our nation under Joe Biden is in such a mess. Whether I will or not is an open question that voters should consider; but I can assure everyone my work on behalf of Florida -a state I love- will never change.”
That type of an answer would be honest and respected. Florida voters deserve to know where Governor DeSantis stands on a 2024 presidential campaign. After all, it will consume most of the focus and time of the governor for 18 months before November 2024.
That type of an answer should also have been canned in a response awaiting the question. The absence of that type of an honest answer tells us something about the campaign authenticity aspect to Ron DeSantis.
The truth has no agenda, while the absence of truth always does.
This authenticity aspect is why Donald Trump won every one of the dozen debates in 2015 and 2016. He just speaks the truth regardless of comfort, expectation or disposition.
Q: “You have called women fat pigs etc.?” – A: “Only Rosie O’Donnell”…
Q: “You called Mexicans rapists etc.?” – A: “Well, someone’s doing the raping”…
Q: “You only support people who like you?” – A: “It’s true. I only like the people who like me”…
Q: “You have been talking to Kim Jong-un?” – A: “True. Shouldn’t we talk to everyone and try to avoid conflict? We also got along great”…
There’s no pretense in Trump’s responses. There is an authenticity in the humanness of the honesty. Trump wins debates because he answers the questions honestly as he sees them. He’s not uncomfortable being honest about his intent, reasons or even his own self-image.
Ron DeSantis on the other hand avoids his own discomfort in answering a question that should have been easily predicted. There is something very unnerving about it.
Every Floridian should vote for Ron DeSantis, granting him the benefit of the doubt that he will be around as governor for the next four years. However, if/when DeSantis wins reelection, he would destroy his own career by announcing a 2024 run six months later.

Yes, if Ron is a hard core politician, and has learned how to shed and grow scales to fit the moment, he will slowly but deliberately back off when Trump announces. I don’t think DeSantis would blow up the GOP by running against Trump, should Trump decide to finalize his intent to run. If Trump chooses not to run, I can guarantee DeSantis will step into the fray (as a front runner, might I add). If Trump runs, I don’t expect DeSantis to compete against him for the nomination, as there is little to no upside for his political career should he do so. DeSantis is queueing up for 2028 while leaving himself an out if for some reason Trump is not in the running. I do agree with Sundance that DeSantis should’ve had a canned answer ready for it. I suspect he has one now.

DeSantis choose to not answer the question because both candidates agreed before the debate to not ask the other candidate questions. Crist went back on his word so DeSantis choose to not stoop to that level. He DID provide an answer later with a really biting and snappy comeback.

He perhaps could have been a bit more direct, but I am taking him at his word that his interest does not extend – right now – to running for president in 2024. Desantis did not fumble the question Sundance. He strategically refused to answer it as originally posed by Crist, because the debate rules did not allow for questions between contestants. The simple truth is that after watching so many establishment republicans betray us over and over the last few decades, many of us are not going to take it well if DeSantis aligns himself with those very people because we can’t trust them. Unfortunately, DeSantis appears to doing just that. If he’d be patient and announce that he will NOT run against Trump in 2024 he might get the VP nod and even if not, he’d have a better chance four years later of becoming President.
But if he continues doing what he’s doing, he’s not going to get enough support from us to make it happen, no matter how good a governor he was. Many of us have learned our lesson. DeSantis was involved in getting Sasse into UOF, supported O’Dea and has a Never Trumper running mate…sure seems to draw on the Never Trumpers. And the new Press Secretary..hmmm.

I support Trump and the Constitution. I also subscribe to Ronald Wilson Reagan’s ” Do not speak ill of other Republicans.” DeSantis could be President in 2028. He has done a fine job as Governor of Florida.
The Reagan rule is lost on this crowd.
What they fail to understand is that if MAGA is to succeed it must be bigger than one man. MAGA needs a broad base of leaders at every level.
To achieve that it would be far more productive to apply Reagan’s rule rather than ridiculous purity tests, but that kind of logic is a lost cause with some here.
Please consider the following “logic” to avoid getting “lost”:
Ron =/= MAGA.
Ron == Traditional pre MAGA Republican.
This is fine for governor/ state politicians. Its definitely NOT fine for POTUS and not ideal for any position in DC.

I think Sundance is right. DeSantis is probably dumping in his own sandbox right now. He is being petted and praised, idolized and cajoled by the RINOs like the Bushs. They NEED someone that owes them in the POTUS seat. It ain’t Trump. DeSantis is popular and he is their next bet to get rid of Trump. DeSantis would certainly be better than a Democrat but he IS probably controllable and not sure he could or would even attempt to gut the FBI, Big Pharma, etc. That is what has to happen to get the country back. Along with completely stripping Federal Aide the Universities and Institutions taken over by the Chinese. Stop the sale of US lands to foreigners for any reason. All these things must be accomplished and soon to preserve the union. Trump needs eight years to clear out this mess and even HE does not have that much time physically.
