According to Jones, he later said that he had decided that these people were not credible and that the shooting did in fact happen … and he said that on his show multiple times.

The father on the cbs video is David Wheeler, a literal former actor. I’m not saying crisis actor, real actor.

Not on that basis, since his First Amendment-based defense was already rejected by the jury. His appeal will have to be that it’s an inappropriately high penalty. That defense will probably fly, and the penalty will be reduced.
We have to face the fact that, culturally speaking, the worst thing you can lie about is the murder of defenseless children. Doing it to gain audience makes that even worse.

Robert Barnes has addressed this process very clearly on Viva Frei. The judge rendered a summary judgment in the initial proceeding, and Jones was not allowed to bring any evidence in his own defence then or in the subsequent proceeding (the awards portion), when a jury was finally allowed to do anything, and that was very corcumscribed.
In addition to that, he later said that he had looked into the people that he had on his show and decided they were pretty kooky so he had changed his mind and now believes that the shootings did in fact happen although there were some questionable things about it. But none of that matters of course.

The Connecticut court issued a political-speech-squelching judgment. The $965 million award speaks for itself in this regard. Jones arguably has a decent First Amendment violation case.
If the higher courts do uphold the jury’s verdict as a matter of law, I agree with your assessment that the award will be reduced substantially, probably < $1 million per plaintiff. Jones had absolutely no responsibility for the deaths of the children. Often medical malpractice suits for wrongful death in children generate $1-2 million awards.

Now that the few SH families who decided to participate in this clearly frivolous lawsuit got their numbers; their lawyers are looking for a huge payday. They have asked the judge to award them nearly half a billion dollars.
Where is Gene Rosen?
Rosen was at the vortex of the Newtown conspiracy theories. I would argue he was the poster child of them. You can still find articles about Rosen being harassed and how he was “Victim Zero” of the “Truther Movement.” If anyone is entitled to damages, it would be Gene Rosen.
Yet neither Gene Rosen nor his estate (if he is deceased) are litigants in any of these suits, and neither appear to have ever been involved in litigation regarding the shooting.
In fact, search results for Rosen end in 2013. Gene Rosen appears to have vanished and never reappeared. Perhaps he changed his identity, but that doesn’t explain why he has avoided pursuing defamation compensation.
While none of this means Rosen was a CA or involved in a hoax, it does suggest he disappeared from the public eye and that the reasons for doing so were more compelling than tens of millions of dollars. Very curious.

This ruling from such an insane judge is so ridicuolous that I feel that it actually stands a great chance of attracting the Supreme Court’s attention.
This trial was in a state court, not federal.
I hope the case does find its way to SCOTUS.

Robert Barnes does a lot of very good commentary about how corrupt this court procedure and judge actually is. Jones was NOT allowed to provide a defense. It was a kangaroo court.

So I’m not sure how a jury decided that saying the shooting was a hoax was an awardable offense.
In many ways it was a hoax, but Jones went too far with the questioning of the deaths without proof. But many things don’t add up with that incident. It didn’t happen the way we were told. That kid Lanza could not have done the shooting, according to firearms experts.
Did anyone ever discover the death certificates? “Victim’s” home sold on Christmas day? Police road signs put up BEFORE the shooting?
