Students from the University of Florida (Gators) showed up to protest against the installation of Nebraska Senator Ben Sasse as their university president.
According to the Tampa Bay Times, “the protesters made five demands. They wanted Sasse to decline the president’s job and the UF board of trustees to release the names — thus far withheld — of all 12 people they had interviewed for the post. They also demanded more transparency during the selection process and the repeal of a new Florida law that makes presidential searches at state colleges and universities largely secret.” (more)
Everyone in Florida knows Governor Ron DeSantis cleared the field for his friend Senator Ben Sasse. As noted by Politico: “Sasse’s sherpa through the university search process was Gov. Ron DeSantis’ chief of staff James Uthmeier, who was put in contact with Sasse several months ago after he quietly expressed interest in becoming UF president.“ (link)
Senator Sasse is a never Trumper reelected in 2020 and his term doesn’t expire until 2026. Sasse is expected to depart this year and the Nebraska governor will make an appointment to fill his senate seat.
…”Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts would then appoint a replacement for Sasse under state law, with the seat then up for a special election in 2024. One of the people familiar with Sasse’s plans said Ricketts himself is viewed as a potential appointee for the seat.”
I was just looking at political contributions to Sasse and I was a little surprised by how many were made after then 2020 election when he was re-elected to his Senate seat. I wonder if any of those people are irked that the money they gave to him isn’t going toward a 2026 campaign. Like Carolyn and Marc Rowan who gave Sasse a combined $11,600 in March. And they don’t even live in Nebraska, they live in Connecticut. Almost none of the contributions to Sasse, at least in 2022 and 2021, came from people who live in Nebraska
Having been prompted by the 2 year late q and a in the video,
maybe this sage advice from another long lived human will resonate with some readers. Maybe not, but maybe yes.
Approximately 40 years ago,
a wise christian, hard / smart working, grandfather said to a grandson who was about to depart home and go to work in the real world at a distant place (hours of travel time away ):
He said, during hand shake, succinctly, clearly, wisely, with eye contact – because of sincere love:
” Don’t take any wooden nickels.”
Some years later, I did a little research on that saying.
He is far from the first to say it.
However, many have never heard it – let alone understood.
The origination looks to be around the time that later to be known
Roman soldier Saul whom killed many believers
> > whom became Paul on the road to damascus
> > whom became imprisoned,
> > but wrote letters, via a courier later to be known as St. Luke:
“Prove all things,
hold fast to that which is good.”
part of a letter to the Thessalonians 5:21
As such, some heeded such advice, with thanks, love, and no regret. (the video shows a sample that were ‘wooden-nickels’, empty words, and some people believed in the value. Those that wanted proof, did not take the unproven words at face value. )
so, simply the advice is given so as to be …paying it forward… to readers ( as have many predecessors for a long, long time…)
Love thy neighbors…
This was meant to be posted in the EU parliament, c-virus article / video.
Another way to perhaps view this situation is that as President of UF, Sasse would control all messaging on his campus….a lot of young voters….he could perhaps continue his anti Trump messaging…while simultaneously showcasing DeSantis….governor visits etc…
Sasse would also be connected to a large number of donors..in state and out..again he could use his political influence…to benefit DeSantis run….
All of this may be far fetched…
Regardless, I consider this to be reward to Sasse from the Club…long term job security if he doesn’t screw it up…and he has a soapbox in Florida to continue his anti Trump rhetoric….the latter of which the Club whole heartedly embraces…
Liz Cheney will be popping up somewhere soon as well….
As for DeSantis…I am reminded of Trumps story of The Snake….with DeSantis playing the Snake…and the ill informed Voters being the old woman….
This is the most high profile, and unforced error, of DeSantis. Personally picking a Rino who is probably unqualified to run a Jr College to be president of University because you are pals… problem
I am hearing that the protestors are from left wing groups.
