[National Hurricane Center Data] As of 11:00pm ET Monday, Hurricane Ian has maximum sustained winds of 105 mph [Category 2]. Ian is anticipated to strengthen rapidly in the next 24 hours as it enters the Gulf of Mexico as a major hurricane [Cat 3+]. All west coast Florida residents from Bonita Springs to Tampa should use Tuesday to finalize their hurricane preparations.
Tuesday is the last good weather day to finish your preparations and secure your property. Do not be alarmed but do take this hurricane seriously. This is not a ‘wait and see’ type storm. All reasonable precautions should be completed today, and all coastal residents are urged to pay close attention to local officials for any evacuation orders. Each locality is different, each coastal locality has a zone of potential flooding and storm surge. As a general rule, hunker down from wind – but evacuate from water.
Official projections put the storm just off the Florida west coast on Wednesday night, with the potential for a 24-hour duration cycle. That is an alarming amount of time for a major hurricane to be centered near or on the coast. That is a minimum of two tidal cycles, which will make a big difference from prior hurricanes in terms of flooding and the potential for a historic storm surge into inland waterways.
Hurricanes can be frightening; downright scary. There’s nothing quite like going through a few to reset your outlook on just how Mother Nature can deliver a cleansing cycle to an entire geographic region. If this storm rests on/near the coast for the projected duration (24 hrs), things could be much more sketchy than other hurricanes. This possibility is not something to dismiss. No one in Florida has a reference.
The geography on the south side of the storm faces the possibility of inbound wind and water for two tides, very uncommon. Additionally, with outbound water limited by the pressure of inbound tides, the Peace River will flood, potentially at a historic level. Let us hope the official forecasts are wrong, but we need to plan for this. Projected rainfall is up to ten inches.
The deepest water will occur along the immediate coast near and to the right of the center, where the surge will be accompanied by large waves. Surge-related flooding depends on the relative timing of the surge and the tidal cycle, and can vary greatly over short distances. For information specific to your area, please see products issued by your local National Weather Service forecast office. [HERE’S LINK] Pay attention to local officials.
Do not panic, but work your plan.
Dangerous coastal area storm surges are now predicted from Fort Myers north into Tampa Bay (south side of storm). Please outline your communication plan with your family. Select a specific person outside the area to be your immediate contact. That person then relays information to the rest of your family. Please do this [Example Why].
Right now, you are in control. Do not be alarmed – but take every preventative measure your individual situation needs. Work your hurricane plan and stay focused on what you do control. Work the plan, step by step and focus on what is in front of you. Ignore the dark imaginings and turn off the national media. Pay attention to your local officials and local media.
Finish your laundry. Sanitize and stage your water storage. Inventory your supplies. Organize your tools. Fill your freezer with water jugs to take up room and freeze. Test your generator. Stage your extension cords. Stage your battery powered devices. Test your weather radio. Take small steps to prepare. Secure your home. You are in full control. Today is the day to finish all preparation tasks.
The #1 priority is to keep calm. Keep stable. If other people around you are panicked, do not let it impact your plan. Stay focused. Stay organized. Stay in control. I cannot emphasize enough how important it is for everyone around you and your family. Everything is replaceable, except you and your family. We have a lot of Treepers in the path of this storm. If you need assistance, use the comments section of any ‘Update thread’ to reach out, or use the email address in the upper right of the site.
DAY THREE (Tue/Wed)
- Get Storm Update
- Re-Evaluate your Supplies based on storm update
- Finish last minute preparation
- Plan for a minimum of THREE DAYS without power
- Assist Your Neighbors
- If Needed – Evacuate Your Family
.
Communication is important. Update your friends and family contact list. Stay in touch with family and friends, let them know your plans. Select a single point of contact for communication from you that all others can then contact for updates if needed.
Telephone and power poles, yes, even the concrete ones, can, and likely will, snap like toothpicks. There’s a sound when you are inside a hurricane that you can never forget.
It ain’t a howling wind, it’s a roar. A damn scary raging roar that just won’t quit….
It will quit… eventually… but at the time you are hearing it, it doesn’t seem like it will ever end.
A constant and pure rage of scary wind that doesn’t ebb and flow like normal wind and storms… hurricane wind just starts and stays, sometimes for hours.
This type of wind is relentless and damn scary. It takes you to that state where you begin to doubt things, it just won’t let up.
And then, depending on her irrelevant opinion toward your insignificant presence, she stops.
Then silence.
No birds. No frogs. No crickets. No sound.
Nature goes mute. It’s weird.
We have no idea how much ambient noise is around us, until it stops.
Oh, if she wants, she’ll keep dumping buckets on you as she wanders away. Buckets. Not pails, garbage can size buckets. After the scour, yup, nature too has a rinse cycle.
Prayers for all those in Ian’s path.
Pray together and be strong together. It might sound goofy to some, but don’t be bashful about prayer – it works.
It will be ok.
Last point, housekeeping. Most of the long-term Treepers know I will likely be unavailable as Civilian Emergency Response Teams (CERT) are activated. The daily threads are auto scheduled to post, and the site admins will update on events if/when I am unavailable. My apologies to those who have written complaining that CTH is not providing the comprehensive coverage of political news.
Unfortunately, home base for all current research will consist of three duffel bags, a laptop, generator and a well-suited 4×4; loaded with power tools, emergency kits and assorted roughneck supplies. I will make every effort to return to political research and analysis – as soon as current logistics, community safety and overall concerns are abated. As part of FL CERT, we reposition outside of the storm surge area. As a consequence, during the logistical move I will be out of the loop for most of the morning and early afternoon Tuesday.
To ensure continuance of communication, CTH has auto-scheduled posts set up throughout the week which will run automatically without any need for human data entry. [ie. the website is secure and will function as normal – and site admins are disbursed throughout unaffected time zones] Other than my absence (hopefully sporadic), you should not see any disruption.
What can YOU DO?
Please pray for the people of Florida. This is an extremely stressful time for many people, including a significant amount of elderly. Unfortunately, due to modern disconnection a considerable number of people do not have frequent contact with family, COVID made this issue worse.
If you know people in Florida, please just reach out to them via social media, email, text, etc and let them know they are in your thoughts and prayers. You don’t have to call them, you don’t need to look for a response, but a short note -just touching base- via social media (Facebook etc.), with kind words, can mean the world to people who might be feeling isolated.
Trust me, I’ve seen those faces all day. It matters.
My prayers are lifted for all in this storm’s path and all those preparing to assist. Although I cannot comprehend this type of onslaught, my heart feels heavy with concern.
Amen. I ask Our Almighty Father to protect and lead all of them, especially
the elderly, the sick and disabled, the children, and those without the money to properly prepare. Lord help them to evacuate if they need to.

#BREAKING the 5am updated
@NHC_Atlantic
track has Ian making landfall directly over Tampa Bay as a Cat 3 hurricane on Thursday. This is a worse case scenario for the city.
@cbs46
If Ian makes landfall South of Sarasota, just above Venice, as some models (GFS, ECMWF) now indicate then her winds will be out of the East and North East in Tampa which should help drive some of the tidal storm surge waves West and knocking down the wave heights which should help the Tampa Bay area.
Prayers for all FL residents in Ian’s path. Stay safe, Sundance.
Yes, the more southerly position of landfall the better. Storm surge can produce far worse damage than winds, especially with up to a ten foot surge predicted. Even, if it made landfall at Sarasota the storm surge there would be less than if it was still just offshore and heading toward landfall at Tampa.
The development on that long strip of key islands along Florida’s west coast is extensive and expensive, and most of it is less than ten feet above sea level.
The absolute worst case would be for the eye to pass along the north shore of the bay. Say the eye passing over St. Pete beach and following just inland of the coast up from there. That would cause maximum surge while the highest winds of the eye wall tear into the developed areas along that coast. Truly a nightmare of a perfect storm. God help them if that happens and if it does it may surpass the 1926 Miami hurricane as the most costly in history.
And it will be followed by the liars and their brain dead minions emitting howls of “climate change” across the globe. Humans are responsible for everything in the opinion of those Godless masses unless of course, it is a mass shooting, and then it is the fault of the machine.
I will never forget some bimbo “reporter” sitting in a canoe while people in front of her walked through the ankle deep water. One of the brain dead minions.
The Media, the people that get paid to lie.
Prayers sent up for all in Ian’s path. I’m praying that it will sit off the coast like the one in 2016, then turn and go out to the gulf. Prayers for safety, health and I’m sure I will think of more.
Dear Lord, please watch over Our fellow citizens in Florida. Please keep Sundance and all responders safe.
Amen

“Official projections put the storm just off the Florida west coast on Wednesday night, with the potential for a 24-hour duration cycle. That is an alarming amount of time for a major hurricane to be centered near or on the coast. That is a minimum of two tidal cycles, …”
So many powerful things coming together to hover over one spot– praying for everyone in Florida, including all Florida CERT and the out-of-state linemen who are already moving toward the storm, pre-positioning to help.
God bless you, Sundance, and all of your associates as you move through the days ahead. May you have the wisdom and insight needed, strength for each hour, and every needed resource.
You know we’ll be waiting to hear from you on the other side.
We just got back driving from Anna Maria Island to Minnesota. I wished we would have counted how many linemen trucks we saw heading south.
God Bless all of the electricians and tree trimmers who leave their families to help! Sometimes it takes an army for restoration and clean up.
Lord, Please keep them all safe.
We live in rural southwest MO, and our local lineman are on their way.
SOP! They will stage just out of the danger zone to move in after the worst of the storm passes. The size of the individual convoys are limited for the practical reasons of traffic, and bathroom, food, rest breaks enroute.
Praying.
God be with you, Sundance. I’m without the right words.
Those ARE the right words!
I experienced at Cat 5 Typhoon when I lived in the Philippines. Not fun.
I really like the Bible verses that you can find at http://www.openbible.info/topics/ .
Click on the letter “P” at the top, and on the resulting page, click on “Peace”. You’ll get lots of good Bible verses on the subject of peace.
Or click on “S” at the top, and on the resulting page, click on “Safe” or “Safety”. You’ll get a lot of good Bible verses on the subject of safety.
The verses in http://www.openbible.info/topics/safe (the subject of “Safe”) are wonderful. For example:
Proverbs 18:10 ESV The name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous man runs into it and is safe.
Psalm 4:8 ESV In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.
Dang, SD even has auto-posts set up. You are THE MAN.
Prayers for all concerned. We will be thinking of you and keeping the faith.
Thank you, Sundance and Team for all you do. God bless Treepers / Floridians in the path. I’m praying for you.
Praying for the Cubans too, who won’t have anywhere near the provision here in the US.
Praying that the Treehouse stays up according its best design during the coming 5 days.
God be with you and all those who are in the path of Hurricane Ian, as well as all who are positioning to help others immediately post storm. You’ll have a busy night and next few days.
Sundance don’t take any ridiculous risks, people the world over depend heavily on you for real news, it’s already rare enough.
Prayers.
Prayers for SD, family, friends in FL and all others who care.
🙏 🙏 🙏 !!!!!
Sundance, your updates are greatly appreciated.
Please stay safe.
Prayers for you and all of those in the path of Ian.
We shall prepare in earnest
We shall help the neighbors
We shall be ready for the clean-up
We shall get back to work asap
Go bags shall be readied in case the roof blows off
The 4WD vehicle is in fine running shape – but we ain’t runnnin
Be careful with the cleaning up – especially with twisted or stretched out tree limbs
I’ll be selling Real Estate, as usual, on Friday. We have a strong community and Florida is a great place to live. Best time to move here is now
This fever pitch housing market is reminding me more every day of the leadup to the ’07 crash. The current growth pattern is unsustainable. What happens when all these new people need water when we have a drought? Have you lived here long enough to remember what happens when it doesn’t rain after years of above average precipitation?
Not going to make a typical “”Keln” comment on this since I’m not really watching storms anymore, but I’ll pray for y’all in Florida. If you got family up north aways, go there. They’ll sure be happy to see you. I would be.
My step son lives just a bit west of Tampa.. We called him yesterday and “invited” him to come here to North Georgia. SMH He said the people he knows are staying. He is relatively new to the area,, he does not know.. SMH
I discovered the hard way after you sit through one hurricane (Charley in 8/04), you won’t sit through another one. Charley was supposed to be a Cat. 1, ended up being a Cat. 4 with winds breaking the wind machine at the hospital in Punta Gorda at 175 mph.
To anyone in Ian’s path,
Take “before” photos inside your home. Set your camera to show the date and time if you are not using your phone camera. Take photos of your contents. Photograph your furniture in place. Photograph your flooring and baseboards. Take photos inside your garage. Photograph your fence. Take photos of recent improvements and the receipts. Most insurance companies are supposed to make estimates so that items replaced are of like kind and quality.
Try to boost up your furniture onto blocks or bricks if you are located in an area that might experience water intrusion. That would be almost anywhere in Florida. Use sand bags. Check with your municipality’s website to find out if they are issuing sand bags. If you have a neighbor with orthopedic problems, that person may need help with sand bags.
Get everything off the floor that you can. Pick up the bed skirts and tuck them or otherwise arrange them so that they don’t hang down at all. If you are leaving, you can pile belongings on top of your beds.
Before you leave, turn off the water supply to your toilets then flush twice. The purpose is to try to lower the water level in the toilet bowl. Homeowners have told me about having sewage back up and overflow from their toilets.
If you have damage, photograph it. If you have flooding, mark the flood line and show a measuring tape from the floor up to the line. Mark and measure the exterior flood line. Back up and take another pic of the exterior marking so that there are more clues in the picture.
After major events, the insurance adjusters start working claims as quickly as possible. Homeowners insurance does not cover flood damage. A separate flood policy is needed for flood damage. It has been that way since the 1970’s.
If you have flood damage and are going to apply to FEMA, be aware that there are limits on what FEMA allows for sheetrock replacement based on the height of the flood line. I can’t remember the guidelines. The allowance wouldn’t cover replacement of full 8′ sheets for a 6″ flood line.
Stay safe. Most things are replaceable. You are not.
Snakes, be mindful before reaching or picking up debris.
Gators too……shivers.
Thanks for the great reminders! We are in Ian’s path on the coast just south of the Tampa Bay area. We rode out Irma a few years back. Much of the city lost power for up to 2 weeks although damage was minimal. Prior to that we were supposed to be in the eye for Charley which turned at the last minute and devastated Port Charlotte. So far in 27 years we’ve been very lucky. I’m praying for the best for ourselves and everyone else in the path of this storm and sincerely appreciate the crews that are standing by to help with rescue and clean up in the aftermath.
I might add, get pictures of any and all pets and family members in case you have to look for them later. Keep a list of what people are wearing.
I have heard about this.. just an idea… flex sealing a doorway at the bottom…. it might just help keep out a minor flood,,, a couple inches over the door bottom.. I bought like 4 cans when we had 11 inches of rain, in Myrtle Beach…
Good luck everyone.
I am in Manatee county, leaving later today for Sun City. I hadn’t thought of turning off the water supply and flushing toilets twice, and I’ve lived here for 20+ years. That is sage advice, and I thank you.
You are welcome. There is so much to think about when faced with a hurricane. I wanted to help with the reminders and a couple of oddball items.
Take care.
Prayers for my Florida peeps, especially the Tampa Bay area, and specifically the Brandon and Riverview area. My Channel 8 app shows some spaghetti models going through that area.
My SIL’s parents live on Davis Island. Hope and pray all are okay! 🙏
Praying for a miracle on behalf of all of our Floridian brothers and sisters and emergency responders. Praying this will not become the Cat 4 they are now predicting. It’s not fun to be trapped in the path of a monster storm. Get out while you still can if this seems appropriate for you. People forget that even pockets not flooded are also cut off in the aftermath because surrounding roads could be closed due to flooding. Anticipate about a week before you will get power back.
911 could likely be a busy signal, so plan accordingly. Look up additional access numbers for assistance while you can still get internet. Grab some yellow “hazard” tape from Home Depot to block off areas where there are downed wires or other hazards, as it will take awhile for authorities to arrive to deal with this. Identify locations in your community that will be set up with emergency back up power to help people charge their devices. Consider creating a neighborhood Facebook page where local resources can be posted for all to access. Good luck everyone! May God be with you and yours and keep you safe.
Dude if you end up at my crib for a rescue, that would be hilarious.
The further south this hurricane comes ashore the more powerful it is likely to be at landfall. Hurricane shutters and modern construction up to code are no defense for storm surge or flooding. The current NHC track is the exact nightmare I wrote about earlier for the Tampa region.
Storm eye passing just along the edge of the north side of the bay with the windward side driving the storm surge up the bay into the natural flood plains that have been developed. Remember that tide state at the time of such a thing happening will be an important factor.
Though the sea bottom off the west coast slopes very gradually the tide is still an important player. High tide at the time of the storms arrival bad! The reason why “Super Storm Sandy” was so bad was channelized surge coming in during a King Tide (extra high tide).
God bless you and yours, Sundance, and all in Ian’s path. I used to live in the Tampa area when all sorts of hurricanes were coming through (even the day our moving truck arrived to pack us up to move, there was a hurricane in the process of baring down on us.) I believe that was in October of 2005.
Praying and will continue to pray. Please, stay safe, and thanks for all you and your staff do.
Marion Cty here…looks like this will be coming here. We are ready. Food, water, house stabilized. Going out in a minute to check stores. Will check back. Thx for the update.
If Crystal River goes offline, we will be in the dark together.
Ur just a hop skip and a jump from me to the west. Hopefully, the tidal surge will be manageable for you. Rain and wind is our biggest concern. After the tornado this year, we have a lot of jumpy folks around here. Prayers to you and yours.
On SE coast we look to be OK, been through many last few years, don’t wish this on anyone.
Been in touch with friends in st pete told them to get in touch when over will help as needed.

Its more the wind in some areas…the link shows 3 inches of rain in the red, is intimidating in the eastern state. The storm surge and wind, are the problems I think (and I don’t know much)…the problem.
OMG the panic and breathlessness on TWC…remember they want you tuned in for ratings.
In the purple? Two to Three feet of rain……….Wowzers!

Sundance is a gem. I love you, brother. Stay safe and God Speed. 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Praying for a miracle that Ian changes direction & loses strength. Praying for Sundance, Admin of CTH & everyone in Florida. Stay Safe!!
My daughter is in Clearwater. She’s in a good strong building on high ground, with a group of highly competent people. She’s staying put. I think about her constantly.
This storm has had me worried for Sundance and all Floridians, especially those on the targeted west side areas. I fear this will be a record-breaking storm, and not in a good way. Watched spaghetti Model Mike’s update yesterday evening. He lives in the Oldmar area of Tampa and is really worried about the forecasted storm surge. Take care of yourselves people.
I dug this out of my way way back
Shades of “Paladin” – “Have Chain Saw, Will Travel!
Stay safe, SD.
Godspeed Sundance.
Thank you Sundance from all of us on this site who live in Florida. We need this info.!
I watched the DART satellite home in and strike the football stadium sized asteroid Dimorphos. A first great step forward in developing the technology and techniques for the possible diversion of a killer asteroid from a trajectory to strike earth and possibly eventually preventing us from going the way the dinosaurs did 65 million years ago.
But it sure seems that we’re a much longer way off from being able to prevent these storms from taking their toll or even being able to precisely project their paths.
If you live in Florida, particularly on the coast, this should be routine. Hang your shutters and enjoy your vacation. Don’t rush back let them restore some services first. If your neck of the woods gets flattened you may want to buy an RV to tote back with you.

Godspeed to all.
Sundance, thank you for what you do for your fellow brethren in FL.
My sixty year old brother lives in Odessa, Florida, outside of Tampa. This is is on the ground report this morning: ‘Category 3 making landfall here. Saying it’s going to slow down to 5mph when it gets here. So 48 hours under the above conditions.
Nothing like this has ever happened here. They are saying this could be catastrophic proportions.’ He and his family have lived there all his adult life, and they have been through storms before. He is prepared as much as possible. We need to pray for everyone in this area.
Ventusky show Ian crossing the state and hitting almost Orlando square before exiting the west coast and running up the east coast. I guess we will know Friday. Hope my son and his GF and travel trailer are in N Georgia by now.
Than you Sundance for all you do and be safe!

I know nothing about generators, but I saw this elsewhere — and wanted to pass it along.
In case you didn’t already know…. If you lose power and you run a generator be sure to shut your main breaker off, that way you’re not feeding power back down the line. You could save a Lineman!
I lived in Charlotte County for 20 years and have many friends there. Many are elderly. I will be in fervent prayer for them and for all in the path of the storm, also for Sundance and all the workers. I was in Hurricane Charley in August 2004 and I remember seeing the line men and their buckets working in the August heat and humidity, trying to get power restored. I was without power for 3 weeks. OT but I remember reading something about 7 million EV’s, don’t remember if that many were in FL or in the US. Am thinking I hope they aren’t on Hwy. 75 heading north to Georgia.
Joe Bastardi on Twitter: “Forecast from the weekend calling for 9 pm Wed landfall and position. New Euro forecast right on top of it. 3rd graphic is post landfall track. Joe Bastardi on Twitter: “Track means Tampa surge not the biggest issue but prolonged siege of hurricane conditions will be. Many non thunderstorm gust reords Tampa to Orlando may be broken” / Twitter
Hurricanes are bad but the ones that run on through the night start having bad effects on peoples psyche, they have been inundated non stop for days by media, then the lights go out and the wind and rain don’t quit.
It’s quite the situation trying to keep everyone calm and assessing any and amount of fixable damage outside.
The second, third and fourth storms were a little easier, still dealing with folks in mid 70’s.
During 2004 season we were outside during the eye of 2 storms with flashlights and chainsaws.
The Jet Stream can help steer hurricanes and impact the paths they take. The current JS Map shows it moving up away from the SE USA and East and NE away from Ian and this may allow Ian to continue to take a more Northerly heading over the next two days.
If so, Ian may make landfall on the West Coast of Fl further North of Tampa and not take a jog to the East and hit below Sarasota.
Key an eye on this development, cuz if Ian stalls off the coast before making landfall, it may move to the North again before going inland. This can have a big impact on Tampa Bay with storm surge and high rainfalls.
Current Jet Stream Map on 9/27, 8 AM:
BTW update: Gov DeSantis just announced that FL residents who have been mandated to evacuate that need accommodations can to go to www(dot)Expedia(dot)com/Florida,… to seek them.
FL State Govt is partnering with Expedia now to help provide accommodations for evacuees. (don’t know about costs???)
DeSantis appears to really be on top of managing this weather emergency.
Keeping all in Ian’s path in my prayers. I think I am far enough away to only have minimum impact, but I’ve certainly lived through my share of hurricanes of varying degrees to not wish them on anybody. As Jim Cantore said, let’s hope Ian ‘underachieves’. I will continue to pray for just that as well as safety for all.
Florida Director of Emergency Management Director Kevin Guthrie says NHC is now predicting #HurricaneIan to landfall in Venice, Florida, in about 35 hours with ~125mph winds. Landfall now predicted to be about 70 miles south of the Tampa Bay area.

For those of you unfamiliar with CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) it’s a fantastic organization that teaches real-life scenarios to volunteers (who are always the first-responders…before professionals arrive). CERT members see and deal with things that untrained folks cannot/will not.
I highly recommend you looking into CERT training in your area, they are very professionally run (in our area affiliated with the local law enforcement). Successful completion will bring you a measure of confidence in various important skill sets to help family and neighbors during emergency situations. Go here for more info: https://community.fema.gov/PreparednessCommunity/s/cert-trainings?language=en_US
I did it when we live in SC it was about a few night of classes (like first aid and some book studies)
then on Saturday hands on training day. We went to a training site the FD uses we got trained to actully
use the big fire extingushers..and we actually did a pretend search and rescue in the building the
FD uses for training they had smoke and crisis actors and we had to go room to room in the building
looking for people tending to help where needed.. It actually was kinda fun (knowing it wasn;t real)
You worked in teams..it is useful..especially now )it not just for storms) but for any crisis or
emeregency where it could take hours to day before help can arrive you have people with basic
training on the spot. of course you only do what you are comfortable doing with your particular
skill set..
Praying for our Treepers and those Floridians in the storm’s path. May our Good and Sovereign Lord deal mercifully with His people and protect our brave first responders. We’ll be praying until Ian is through. Take heart and be safe!
At 10AM the Weather Channel is saying the hurricane may veer to the right even more and may have landfall around Ft Pierce. The last hurricane that was supposed to hit Tampa actually went to the right and hit Naples first.
#Ian is constantly changing, and it’s imperative to stay updated.

I have a home on Anna Maria. Higher point on the island is 3 feet. Storm surge of 10 feet will be catastrophic.
Are there windmills in Florida? Even if the blades are locked down, I’d think hurricane force winds could get under them and cause havoc?
