The multinational Disney corporation decided to target conservative lawmakers in Florida after the legislature passed a bill to stop the sexualization of children K-3 in public schools.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis called for the legislature to consider the removal of Disney World’s special district status in a previously scheduled special session.
Today, the Florida Senate approved a bill to revoke Disney’s ‘special district’ status in the Orlando area.
(Via Wall Street Journal) – The Republican-led Florida Senate passed a bill Wednesday that would eliminate a special tax district that allows Walt Disney Co. to govern the land where its theme parks sit, as lawmakers target the company for opposing legislation restricting classroom instruction on gender and sexuality.
The GOP-led House will likely vote to approve the measure Thursday. Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis, who called for lawmakers to consider such a bill in a special session he convened this week, has made clear he would sign it.
Losing the nearly 40-square-mile district near Orlando could be a major blow to Disney’s Florida operations.
[The special district] allows Disney to construct new buildings and expand its parks without having to adhere to state or county regulations related to construction, wastewater management and drainage. My youngest is now 14, so thankfully our Disney World days have been over for 5+ years. I’ve never been a big fan of Disney (since I was a kid, was much bigger fan of Looney Tunes) and as far as theme parks, we’re all much bigger fans of Universal/Islands of Adventure.
I just wish Disney didn’t own the rights to Marvel! I can’t get my son and wife to agree to ditch Disney+ because of Marvel! But we will never step foot ever again in Disney World.

At least half of Disney (which includes Epcot, and any of the other parks) employees are foreigners. They have multiple apartment complexes for them. Every foreigner working at Epcot in the “lands” are actually from those places. If you work in Italy, your Italian, etc…
No layoffs! Less workers at the Florida parks would turn off guests. No maintenance on rides, means closed rides, hotel staff would mean less rooms available, and so on.

So not only is Gov DeSantis teaching a lesson to Disney, but alsothe correction of vote counting in Orange & Osceola counties to be Red.

When a corporation decides to way in on policy, that is totally outside of their business interests, they open themselves up for consequences.

If those parks are in violation of any zoning, drainage, wetlands preservation, species protection, noise, congestion, or other regulations such as those governing where buildings can be built, DeSantis should bring in the wrecking crew and start tearing things down in those parks. If they don’t like it, they can apply for a permit like everyone else.
It will be interesting to see how many regulations and rules the woke Mouse has broken or violated, won’t it?
Whole sections, if not all of their cash cow could be shut down until the violations are remedied, and the fines should be epic.
I doubt that. They made their own rules as permitted by law.
Usually existing structures are grandfathered in when laws are changed. They will have to comply with all local and state requirements going forward. I would be surprised if the new law would allow the state to enforce current requirements that didn’t exist for the last 55 years.

1. Will existing structures be grandfathered, & it’s sand in the gears on new construction.
2. How many gov’t employees in local/state regulatory agencies agree with the left leanings of the the mouse & will choose to selectively enforce? Of all gov’t agencies, these tend to favor under the table payments.

If we want any part of what used to be our country to remain in existence, much less to prosper, enemy institutions must be destroyed or driven out. Disney has become a weapon manufacturing operation in a culture war to erase us. Once a war has started, one doesn’t allow enemy weapon manufacturing facilities to go on making weapons unopposed. Read the WSJ article, special district Reedy Creek pays all county property taxes and pay for their own fire dept, etc. The special district can build without zoning laws and permits and the fees generated by permits.

The dissolution of the Reedy Creek Improvement District SOUNDS like a total win for FL, but other sites have remarked that such a move would leave local (Orange and Osceola County) residents on the hook for nearly $2B in outstanding bond debt.

Did they issue the bonds or did the district? If the district issued the bonds, the district should have to pay their own debt. If the agreement was if the district was ever dissolved, the local counties would pick up the debt, sue over an adhesion contract–let the CIA involvement with the district’s creation, the sneaky, underhanded goings on that got the Mouse House built come out in court. Then hand the bill to the CIA.

If the GOP takes Congress, one of its priorities should be to bar voting of shares of stock by outfits like Blackrock and Vanguard that hold those shares for mutual fund owners. The mutual fund owners should be the only ones allowed to vote those shares. It’s absurd that Blackrock and Vanguard can vote shares they don’t equitably own but instead are holding for others. Doing this would give the share owning public a lot more say in what happens at big companies. They could publicize it as a populist measure and get widespread support and tie it to legislation that Biden has to sign. Let’s put people like Liz Warren on the spot and make them squeal that the little guy shouldn’t be allowed to vote shares he owns.

No one ever talks about the vegetable plants engineered to not produce seeds in favor of higher yield. This can have far reaching effects in the case of widespread crop failures.
