Johnny Van Zant, lead vocalist of Lynyrd Skynyrd, and his brother Donnie Van Zant created a song to celebrate freedom and Florida, thanking Governor Ron DeSantis for his leadership over the past few years. {Direct Rumble Link}
As Governor DeSantis heads into a reelection campaign, he mentioned to Van Zant it would be great if they created a song for Florida in the same genre as their famous hit Sweet Home Alabama. The two brothers took the challenge and wrote and recorded “Sweet Florida.” It’s a catchy tune. WATCH:

It really says something that a single band from a music category that is supposedly all about rejecting authority stands out for celebrating a single politician from a party that is supposedly all about protecting individual liberty for being the solitary example of doing just that.

I understand and know exactly what you are saying. It clearly was slapped together quickly, and it drags a little slow for my taste. For a rally, political event, or whatever upbeat is always better. It isn’t a great dance/bop song, and the lyrics are cheesy, but it is a NICE song and will serve the purpose.
W/agreement of your analysis, it is an honor for DeSantis they did it, and bandwagon folks will love it. It will generate him attention and that is the goal. Lots of money will be made from the branding and that is good.

In the (Freebird) tribute to Ronnie, the band incorporates past footage of the beloved singer. It is AWESOME!! (And emotional) Everyone on the crew basically stops what they are doing to watch.

Nice to see a man so hard working relaxed and smiling. “Cheesy” as some say or not, the Van Zant brothers honored him with something they wrote in just a couple of hours. They sure did let the Gov know that they were grateful and appreciative. Not enough of that these days, and I’m glad to see it.

It’s a State Park, rustic, hiking trails, picnicking areas, although there is a small restaurant.
You have only a few hours then you have to catch your taxi back to Dunedin.
Gov. DeSantis played baseball in Little League, and is a Dunedin HS grad, I believe.

It’s called Tarpon Springs. Famous for the Greek settlement, their food, seafood and most of all the sea sponge docks.

Classic! Years ago, while in Reno on vacation, I was playing blackjack late at night at the old Airport Hilton. There was only 2 or 3 of us at the table. I struck up a conversation with a guy sitting beside me who seemed like a nice guy. Didn’t have a clue who he was at the time. Played next to the guy for a couple hours until someone came and got him. It wasn’t until then I found out it was Johnnie Van Zant. Lynyrd Skynyd had played a concert there earlier which I didn’t attend..

I had a chance to “chat” with Mr. Johnny Van Zant (while rigging a recent tour for them).
I said that it was/is my “Distinct honor and pleasure to be but a mere pixel in an asterisk, in the legendary, epic, and iconic legacy of their beloved band”..
He said “Skip, if it weren’t for folks like you (crew and fans) we wouldn’t be who we are”, and thanked me profusely for my efforts.
Their Stage Manager has been with them for over 40 years!! (says a LOT!)
What a fantastic group of musicians, and a truly influential entity in the lives of so many.
Their tribute to Ronnie brought a tear to this old geezer’s eye.
If you can, please attend one (or more) of their shows? You WON’T regret it!

Another Skynyrd song I’ve always enjoyed is “gimme 3 Steps.” The song is about a guy (probably a band member) who flees from a jealous boyfriend with a gun in a bar. And no, the fleeing band member doesn’t return to the bar to shoot the place up in order to seek “revenge” or “respect” in any way. Today’s city criminals would live a lot longer and avoid much trouble if they followed in those Skynyrd footsteps.

The Van Zandt family are extraordinary Americans. Could have gone hollywood .. and died, like so many other rock stars. Instead, they return to the farm near Jacksonville when off the tour and live real lives. They were very gracious to my son as he was recovering from an ied event in Afghanistan, and hosted him at a performance in Orlando once he was well on in recovery. Really, really good folks.
