My family is dealing with this internally. My niece has declared she’s a boy. She’s announced she’s no longer her name and needs to be called by this new name- a boy’s name. Now, how old is she? Well, this started when she was 9. She’s now 11.
It has caused so much turmoil in my family. My SIL and my BIL (I feel bad for him- I know his actual position) are in a challenging situation. But, I am continuously looked at as the bad guy. Why? Because I ask difficult questions. I love my niece. I love her to pieces, so I ask hard questions. She’s autistic. You can see this when you converse with her. But, she also has an IQ of over 125. How do I know- well, my SIL/BIL has had her seeing a psychiatrist for over a year now. She’s been diagnosed with autism, gender dysmorphia, and anxiety disorder. They had her take an IQ test- which is how I know. I share this to show she’s smart…but because she’s intelligent and autistic- she’s a very awkward girl.
That background sets the stage for why I think what I do and results in the questions I ask. My SIL/BIL are very wealthy. Very- he makes millions. Contrary to my wife’s and I child rearing tendencies- the SIL/BIL utilized the iPad and internet to “watch” their kids and “nannies.” My niece was constantly online at 9. She found a chat group. She shared how she was picked on. She shared many things. She started saying things like cis and other sexually identifying things no nine-year-old knows.
So, I asked my family- my wife, my SIL, my BIL, and my in-laws, “Does anyone other than me find it odd she (my niece) knows these terms? She learned them online, in a group of adults, not kids, and because of this group, she now thinks she’s a boy?” I followed with, “She’s autistic and smart. Very smart. But, she’s very awkward and was picked on in school. This group took her in, fed her their thoughts, took advantage of her age, and convinced her she was not being picked on because she’s autistic and that her quirkiness wasn’t because of her autism but rather- was cuz she’s a boy trapped in a girls body?”
I got scolded. I got reprimanded. I was called names- by my family. I don’t treat her differently. Not one iota; she talks to me more than anyone else when I visit (because IDC and treat her the same way I always have- I know she senses that), but they missed my whole point. This group groomed her, and I genuinely feel that if she had not had access to the internet as often as she did at 9 yrs old, she would never have gone down this road. She’s autistic and was awkward. She was just looking for people to accept her and this group took advantage of that- because it was adults.
My family hates that I think this- but I’m not changing my stance. And I still love my niece. And, I get this is a complicated thing- all mental disorders are complex situations for families to handle- just talk to anyone with a schizo or bipolar in their family. My sister is bipolar, so I can relate, but my wife’s family dismisses this- they don’t think it’s the same.
It’s the group that needs to be taken to task! Online grooming is just as real and dangerous as irl.

Generally speaking, from my experience, input processing is the overall problem.

With the parents, I don’t know what to say.
Ive worked with parents of children in the austistic spectrum for years.
Some are grounded and real, some are autistic themselves.

Her husband is normal.
I knew both kids as they grew up.

I worked in a school with 1,800 students and some of them decided to be ‘gay’ simply because their new status awarded them prizes they were too lazy to achieve the traditional way. Ironically, the genuinely gay students (approx 4-5%) disliked the pretenders who often claimed to be transgender, but were silenced by a mistaken loyalty toward fellow ‘others’ or increasingly the fear they would have the social media mob set on them.
