Jesus took Peter, John, and James
and went up the mountain to pray.
While he was praying his face changed in appearance
and his clothing became dazzling white.
And behold, two men were conversing with him, Moses and Elijah,
who appeared in glory and spoke of his exodus
that he was going to accomplish in Jerusalem.
Peter and his companions had been overcome by sleep,
but becoming fully awake,
they saw his glory and the two men standing with him.
As they were about to part from him, Peter said to Jesus,
“Master, it is good that we are here;
let us make three tents,
one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”
But he did not know what he was saying.
While he was still speaking,
a cloud came and cast a shadow over them,
and they became frightened when they entered the cloud.
Then from the cloud came a voice that said,
“This is my chosen Son; listen to him.”
After the voice had spoken, Jesus was found alone.
They fell silent and did not at that time
tell anyone what they had seen.
Once again profound thanks Menagerie for putting the things that really matter up front.
BTW, being an old timer who is familiar with the traditional Jerseulem Bible, which “revised modern” version do you quote from?
I get the day’s readings for the Mass from the USCCB website. Since these are the readings for Mass, they come from the Lectionary. This is from the website.
The 1970 edition of the New American Bible is used in the Scripture readings and canticles of the Liturgy of the Hours (except the Benedictus, Magnificat, and Nunc dimittis.)
This is the same place/ap from which I pray my daily DivineOffice. The psalms are the same translation I have used for years. Having the availability on my iPhone means not having to carry one of my four volume prayer books
Therefore not missing one of 7 times for prayer.
It’s called the Catholic mega app. There are others but I most often use this one and can take it to Mass in order to follow the readings.
My Jesus, my Lord, my Savior.
To God be all Glory, Dominion, and Honor forevermore. Come, Lord Jesus, come. The voices calling out from under the altar… “When, Lord, when?” Your bride is waiting. With Jesus’s Holy and Saving Name, AMEN
Jesus, the Sovereign and Holy Saviour of the universe!
Loving God,
there is so much darkness in my life
and I hide from you.
Take my hand
and lead me out of the shadows of my fear.
Help me to change my heart.
Bring me to your truth
and help me to respond to your generous love.
Let me recognize the fullness of your love
which will fill my life.
Free me from the darkness in my heart.
Amen.
Of note, this event happened about a week after Jesus taught that we need to be willing to suffer even death rather than to deny him. He went to the cross, despising the shame, because of the eternal joy set before him. He calls us to follow and gives us a glimpse of what we shall be.
The pattern of history for followers of Yeshua is persecution and martyrdom, not escape and comfort, as much of the Western church seems to believe. Indeed, the Greek word almost always used in the New Testament for witness is martyr.
From Strong’s: 3144. martus mar’-toos of uncertain affinity; a witness (literally (judicially) or figuratively (genitive case)); by analogy, a “martyr”:– martyr, record, witness.
We can learn from the underground church, which has no illusions about what it means to follow Jesus.
The saints are God’s water: they go to the lowest and driest places. Do you live in a society, or a situation, that is full of evil? Don’t complain; practice nursing. That’s why He put you there.—Peter Kreeftfrom his book Practical Theology
I am having trouble finding much about Mr. Kreeft and/ or this book. Can you point me in a direction?
Here’s his website: https://www.peterkreeft.com/.
Five minutes of the greatest Music you will ever hear:
Os justi meditabitur sapientiam
Et lingua ejus loquetur judicium.
Lex Dei ejus in corde ipsius
Et non supplantabuntur gressus ejus.
The mouth of a just man will meditate upon Wisdom,
And his tongue will speak Justice.
The Law of God is in his heart
And his steps will not be hindered.
Here is the greatest version of these Psalm 36 verses: Anton Bruckner’s Os iusti for a capella choir.
Note that Bruckner restricts himself to the “white keys” of the piano, i.e. only 7 notes are used. (F-G-A-B-C-D-E)
Oh my heart thank you so much for this it is beyond glorious
You are quite welcome!
Bruckner’s 9 symphonies go to spiritual and emotional universes unknown and marvelous to explore!
Here is a recommended religious work (Te Deum) and one of my favorite symphonies by Bruckner:
Te Deum:
Symphony #6:
Bruckner remains one of my favorite composers from this era. He could weave human voices together like a marvelous tapestry … given a cast of well-trained singers. Like these.
Amen! I discovered Bruckner nearly 60 years ago when I was 13 or so: I saw the (brand new) score of the 7th Symphony at the Dayton Public Library along with a new recording and was immediately hooked…even though my little monaural record player was overtaxed by the stereo record!
That’s a magnificent painting …
Thank you, Menagerie.
I am always grateful that scripture is posted here and that those who trust in Christ can share. Only in Jesus is there redemption, and let us display God’s great love in all our thoughts and actions.
Beautiful painting. Who is the artist?
Agnus Dei / King of Kings (Lyric Video) – Hillsong Worship
Menagerie (@Menagerie), I want you to see this – please watch. The Rumble site is “RefugeOfSinners” – first time I’ve heard of it. It’s NOT the Malone interview, although that is excellent …. it is what is at the end of the video. A Friar (?) talking to the viewers ….. it was SO good, hit me right where it mattered …. I cried, but felt SO very comforted. His prayer – I’m not Catholic, but the prayer to Saint Michael the Archangel, great warrior, was simple and powerful and I will be including a prayer to the Archangel Michael in my prayers from now on.
I wish I knew how to prompt the video to when this part starts …. it’s around 1:03:05 so skip to that time.

Sorry for the fb part of the link – I had posted it to someone else on fb & forgot to delete that part – here it is without:

I say that prayer every morning. Many priests also lead the congregation in the St. Michael prayer at the end of Mass. it’s a favorite of mine, and there’s a very interesting story about the original longer version. You should Google it sometime.
Thanks – I’ll do that.
God bless you both, Menagerie and Sundance!
Menagerie,
I’ve been praying for you. By the end of the day, I didn’t want to go to Mass on Ash Wednesday, but because of your Lenten posts, I made myself go.
I haven’t missed a single daily Mass since. Thank you for giving me the strength. I hope in return you’ve found strength through my prayers for you.
God doesn’t let me forget about you, especially during the Consecration yesterday and today, I thought of what you said about the Real Presence (a simple phrase from your heart about where on Earth you can go). He’s truly with us until the end of time.
Two times God said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him,” – after the Baptism of Jesus and after the Transfiguration of Jesus before His crucifixion. Jesus did not have to get baptized nor did He have to be crucified. This was all done through free will.
While praying for you, it came to me that God must have said these very words to you when you became Catholic through receiving the Sacraments, “This is my beloved daughter, with whom I am well pleased; listen to her.” You did not have to become Catholic, but you did. You chose to by your own free will.
Continue to be guided and inspired by the Holy Spirit. Don’t be afraid to speak the insights deep within you. He has equipped you with wisdom and logic. That was how you came to find Him, His Real Presence. Continue to use your talents and gifts for God’s greater glory, He’s alongside with you like a proud Father.
Thank you!
Fabulous painting!
Thank You!
Oh my, I am so thankful you sent this! I really needed to hear this scripture, helps me remember why we are here! Big Love to you!!!!
To me, this is simply one of the most spectacularly human episodes in the Bible. Here are three men who quite literally come face-to-face with God, and with two of the most-esteemed Jewish patriarchs, and then a cloud-draped Father. But, look how delicately the scene is presented: “He did not know what he was saying.” “They became frightened when they entered the cloud.” And then – “Jesus was found alone.” And: “they fell silent.”
“Wow.”
These three men are people. Utterly terrified, of course. (How could they not be?) Yet they are handled by the writer with great dignity, so that they remain “people.” You could probably create an entire movie out of these two paragraphs. Oh, wait … some people already have.
I was clicking around looking for the St. Michael origin and found a Father Nolan I missed. It is a good one.
8 days before the transfiguration Jesus told his disciples “ I tell you the truth , some who are standing here will not taste death before they see the kingdom of God.
8 days later he took Peter, John , and James up the mountain to pray. There they saw Jesus in his true glory speaking with Moses ( the law) and Elijah (the prophets)x
Isn’t it interesting that The epistles of Peter, John , and James are just before the “Revelation “ of Jesus Christ. 🤔 hmmm.
Thank you for the beautiful music.
I once had an alley cat who loved gregorian chants but she would run helter skelter when I put on William Tells Overture.
Thank you. 🙏🏻
