at our office, it was announced last week that one person had tested positive (and shall remain anonymous). And that any office workers who had come into contact had been notified. The positive person is sick, at home (but not that sick). Process of elimination, we figured out who it is.
The announcement from HR was reassuring in this detail: “do not worry; all people who came into contact with the positive employee have been fully vaccinated/boosted (as is the positive employee).”
No one is freaking out over this. We had a full turnout one day later. People are just over it. I am the only remaining unvaxxed person in the office. I possibly have not caught COVID at all, other than recently possibly Omicron. Just saying…. for all the grave danger that COVID apparently is to unvaxxed people…. after two years, so far so good. And knock on wood.
I believe Omicron is the common cold. And even Rochelle Walensky said that people who have recovered from COVID can test positive for up to 12 weeks afterwards.

Older individuals are at higher risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection and severe outcome but the underlying mechanisms are incompletely understood. In addition, how age modulates SARS-CoV-2 re-infection and vaccine breakthrough infections remains largely unexplored.
Here, we investigated age-associated SARS-CoV-2 pathogenesis, immune responses, and the occurrence of re-infection and vaccine breakthrough infection utilizing a wild type C57BL/6N mouse model.
We demonstrated that interferon and adaptive antibody response upon SARS-CoV-2 challenge are significantly impaired in aged mice in comparison to young mice, which results in more effective virus replication and severe disease manifestations in the respiratory tract.
Aged mice also showed increased susceptibility to re-infection due to insufficient immune protection acquired during primary infection.
Importantly, two-dose COVID-19 mRNA vaccination conferred limited adaptive immune response among the aged mice which rendered them susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 infection.
Collectively, our findings call for tailored and optimized treatment and prevention strategies against SARS-CoV-2 among the older individuals.

Hoping people can point me in right direction. My mother has just been diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer. This has come very suddenly. On Tuesday she starts chemo. She has 2 Pfizer jabs. My sister is not allowing me to visit my parents due to my being unvaxxed. Therefore I cannot help. So we are at loggerheads. Did I read that the CDC has said transmission is the same if you are vaxxed/unvaxxed? My sister says she is protecting my mother but she is also angry I haven’t gotten vaxxed to be able to help her with her husband who is very sick.

I have taken some time to think on your situation and I have some guesses. Your sister has a “very sick” husband and now has a mother that is very ill as well. She is likely one step past fearful and may be terrified of what life around her has become. She is likely angry and may be taking it out on you. Your lack of vaccination may be seen by her as uncaring. She really does not see vaccination as a big deal. She cannot understand your problem. She really thinks you are willing to hurt your mom just because you have some unreasonable objection to the vaccine. Her perception is real to her even though it is irrational. You can not make her see otherwise. She may be blinded by fear.
This is what I would do if it were me. You need to do what your heart tells you, not some stranger on the internet. You know infinitely more about the specific variables than do I. Maybe my thoughts will inspire your thoughts.
Contact your sister and tell her that you are willing to help in whatever way that you can but it would be a minimum of six weeks before you could be considered “fully vaccinated” by the CDC and it would be unwise to take any chances at this point. Getting the vaccine now would not even matter and if you have a reaction as some have had you would not even be able to help at all. Tell her that you will buy a supply of the best masks available and you will always use them around mom. Keep a supply of hand sanitizer and use it. Wipe down everything you touch. I know those things probably do not help but she is likely convinced that they do and the exercise is to calm her fears not to prevent a disease. Buy a supply of rapid home tests and test every day that you may be in contact. Tell your sister that if you ever get a positive test you will self isolate exactly as the current CDC rules require. If you get the sniffles and test negative, tell her it might not be safe.

If she still insists that you cannot visit mom, then offer to help in other ways. Let her see that you are really willing to help. Be gracious even though it will be very difficult. Run errands. Facetime with mom. Do the best you can. Do the tests and tell her that you are testing every day to be safe.
See if you can get her to agree to one very difficult concession. If mom gets worse and the doctors say it is time to plan for the inevitable, tell the sister there is nothing left to protect and that you want to spend time with mom. Don’t let her make the decision. Have mom decide.
Be ready to accept that this may be one of those moments in life in which a price is paid for our convictions. In a life well lived, they will happen.

Plan B. Lie. Tell her you got the vaccine so you can see mom. Get a fake vax card. It is only a legal issue for official uses and getting past a sister to see a sick mom is not an official use. Tell absolutely no one. You do not have a friend that you can trust enough to tell this. Period. This decision is between you and God. If you get Covid you can say that there are breakthrough cases and it looks like you are one of them. It is not even rare.
Plan C. Get vaccinated. I understand your objection to the vaccine, but sometimes we have to decide whether to put ourselves into danger to protect and care for those we love. My mom spent ten years in critical care for Alzheimer’s. If it had been necessary for me to put my life or health at risk to make certain that she got proper care, I would have considered it. That is a decision I can only make for myself. I am not telling you to do it. I am not recommending it. I am not suggesting that you do it. I am only stating that it is one possibility and you will need to decide on your own.
I am leaning toward Plan B. But, that is just me. I will pray for wisdom for you and your family. Your mom needs strength and your sister needs courage in a difficult time.

I’m not sure on whether or not the CDC said transmission is the same, but the CDC did say the vaccinated can have the same or even greater viral load of an unvaccinated person.
