I learned fairly recently that while many of the manufactured goods shipped to the United State are of low quality, not everything made in China is crap. The higher quality products (particularly electronics) are just not sold in the United States.
China can, and does, build outstanding and complex products. BUT China builds precisely to the buyers’ specifications. The “Chinese quality problem” is a direct result of cheap-ass American buyers giving the Chinese low-end specifications to save money. Can you say “Walmart”?
I use state-of-the-art audio electronics, and digital camera lenses, all made in China to top specs. They are priced on par with their Japanese equivalents, and they work every bit as well.
The only problem with converting to domestic production is the 2-3 years to build and tool a new facility.
If the Big Industrials had actually started doing that in 2018 like Trump asked, they’d be done by now and be in a position to hedge foreign intervention with goods made in the USA.
But they didn’t, Big Industrials doubled down on the Democrats, which means any change now equals 2 years of intense financial pain for consumers. You think inflation is bad now? Just wait until these costs are passed on.
Treepers need to understand most items made in China are actually designed by US corporations, then manufactured in China for low labor cost and without complying with US environmental regulations.
Why would domestic manufacture bother with building a production facility, making a product that cost 25-30% more than competitors using China labor.
It’s why the election was stolen.
China’s machinations aimed at damaging Biden might well have the unintended consequence of electing even more Republicans including electing Trump in ’24. Reality bites.

is that once a US company has outsourced to a Chinese manufacturer, the same manufacturer will manufacture and sell the same products , including affixing the trademark, and then undersell the US company. Sometimes shipping to customers in the US.
Also, if the manufacturer has cut corners in the “knockoff” the US company gets the blame for a substandard product.
The one BIG problem converting to domestic production is where to get the venture capital. Who is willing to invest in the US with riots and social unrest/uncertainty going on?

I don’t get it, why is everyone sending their offshore mfg. exclusively to China ? Why haven’t they diversified their supply chains by doing more sourcing with more honest countries like Singapore, South Korea, Mexico, India, Poland, Romania, Hungary. Ok, their unit costs go up a few percent because European labor is more expensive than Chinese labor, but your new tennis shoes won’t be made with slave labor. And I suspect these countries won’t rip off our intellectual property the way the Chinese do.
There’s virtually nothing made in China that can’t be made in India. Ditto for Eastern Europe: Poland, Romania, Hungary are major industrial producers, especially in aerospace and electronics fabrication. Did you know there are over 200 aerospace companies in Poland alone? Poland’s consumer electronics base supplies much of the EU, who needs China? I think Pres. Trump made a number of overtures to these countries re. taking on more China-based outsourcing.
Cargo ships sailing from European ports have easy access to dozens of major ports along the East Coast & Gulf of Mexico, so the shipping costs can’t be significantly higher than ships coming out of China. Jacksonville, Savanah, Charleston, Virginia, New Jersey, New York.
I’ve thought the same thing. Probably the Chinese are better at “leveraging” our “public servants” with enticing situations they later decide they don’t want anyone to know about, etc..
