OK. Here is how I understand all this. Vaccination, while it reduces the probability of catching COVID-19, does not absolutely prevent catching the virus or testing positive for it. It does significantly reduce the probability of your becoming seriously ill or dying from the virus. Because it introduces antibodies into your body they attack the virus early and prevent its reproduction to the point that it become a serious infection. We know now that, like other vaccines for respiratory illness, the COVID-19 vaccine loses some of its effectiveness over time – thus the booster (the effectiveness of which will also diminish over time).

We do not know much of anything about the long term effects of the new mRNA vaccines. We know the elderly are the most vulnerable to contracting COVID-19 and are also the least likely to suffer long term effects – long term is pretty short for most of us. Therefore, risk assessment for old people would suggest getting vaccinated is warranted. Most old people have made that assessment and are vaccinated; however, advocating their vaccination should continue.

We also know that young children (pick an age group here) do not seem to contract the virus in large numbers and that the serious illness and death rates for them are statistically negligible. Probably natural immunity (probably superior to vaccine induced immunity) will spread in that population over time – herd immunity if you will – a highly desirable condition since it is posited by some that mass vaccination at the expense of developing natural immunity enables the evolution of variants, the virulence and transmissibility of which are unpredictable. As for long-term effects, whatever those effects are, the very young are the cohort that will experience them. Given all this, the case for vaccinating young children is weak – it may even be a negative; however, parents should have the opportunity to make their own risk assessment. Thus, the vaccine should be offered to them for their children, but mandating it makes no sense.

Then there is the majority that falls between the old and the young. Risk assessment for them is more complicated, but the same considerations apply. The data available suggests the risk of serious consequences from the virus increases with age and that the risk remains relatively low for most younger adults. This complicates the risk assessment for this majority.

All the data available for the United States is rather badly skewed by the refusal of national health authorities to even consider treatments that have shown themselves to have some efficacy in preventing COVID infection from advancing to a more serious state, especially when given early; in reducing the recovery time for patients; and possibly as prophylaxis.

Finally, a blinding flash of the obvious: Americans do not respond well to mandates. Never have and probably never will. Early in the availability of vaccines people were clamoring to get them. Once the suggestion that they might be mandated the vaccination rate began to decline (the flip-flopping of national health authorities and their refusal to authorize the readily available and reasonably safe treatments also contributed heavily to the rate decline). It seems clear that had the subject of mandates never arisen the vaccination rate would be significantly higher than it is. However, that train has left the station and cannot be reversed. The rational course of action is to cancel most of the existing mandates (a few mandates actually are rational) and to absolutely NOT mandate COVID-19 vaccinations for children. However, the vaccines should be offered and parents, despite the Terry McAuliffe types out there, should be allowed to make their own risk assessment, assuming, of course, that the full story of possible risks is told publicly as they become known. Dare I say it? Follow the science.

If the goal is to increase the number of people vaccinated for COVID-19 it seems the best approach, at this point, would be to cancel vaccine mandates. Americans do not respond well to mandates – never have and probably never will. The vaccine mandates have not been very effective; they have simply gotten peoples’ backs up. When you look at the overall picture, mandates have done more harm than good and that situation is getting worse.

I wish her a speedy recovery.
And some curiosity and humility. For if she can get it being fully vaccinated and surrounded by others who have and are constantly tested, then maybe she now understands vaccination does not stop transmission.
But I believe she will blame her illness on the unvaccinated with no proof.
