When Barack Obama and James Clyburn were organizing the pathway for Joe Biden in the 2020 election, they reached out in March to the remaining candidates and told each of them they were going to withdraw. Each candidate was given an offer they could not refuse along with a question of what terms it would take to get them out of the race and support the avatar that was/is Joe Biden.
Having watched the Buttigieg snap-n-pop candidacy, it was obvious his terms involved getting an innocuous job that would provide him and his husband enough graft to facilitate their lifestyle. Obama and Clyburn offered Alfred E. Newman the job of Secretary of Transportation. Pete Buttigieg’s curriculum vitae included that he held a drivers license, so he gleefully exclaimed his qualifications and accepted the job.
The guy is an absolute doofus; a soy version of Greta Thunberg, who is incapable of speaking about anything that makes any sense. He is a caricature of the person who thinks they know something, so they speak in weird sentences that amount to total gibberish. WATCH:

Actually Elizabeth, the average truck driver, when you figure in unpaid time in the truck, averages out to around… Here, let’s do some math… The average truck driver will gross roughly $900 a week, we can only legally work 70 hours, but many of us easily work 100 hours when you consider what we do out here, this is per week.
Now let’s break this down, I’ll use 70 hours, as that is all we are again, legally allowed to work… 900 / 70 = $12.85 an hour. Now take out taxes from that $900 gross, I will use say .27% as a rough figure. $900 x .27 = $243… More math… $900 – $243 = $657 NET take home. Now, let’s do some more math… $657 / 70 hours = $9.38 an hour.
Would you live and work every week, eat, sleep and whatever in an 8′ x 5′ box, getting up every day, climb out of bed and immediately dress, walk, sometimes run, up to 200 yards every morning to use the facilities? Or, arriving at a truck stop after working all day, only to discover the only food available is 6 hour old hot dogs on a roller grill because the restaurant is now closed, when it used to serve you 24/7? Or you want to take a shower, but cannot, because no one at the truck stop showed up for work to clean the showers, and the gal behind the counter refuses you to clean the shower yourself just to get cleaned up?
And those regulations, we can only work the hours that the government mandated clock installed in our trucks says when we can legally drive. In most cases, we cannot even move the truck in the truck stop until the clock says we can. Once we start work, log into our Electronic Logging Device, the 14 hour clock starts. There are no more sitting out traffic, or taking the long way around to avoid traffic, no, we have to go. We are now in a race against time. We get to the shipper to load, have an 8am appointment, only to find that they are 10 hours behind in loading. Now what do you do, you are wide awake! Well, you sit, try to sleep if possible, maybe pop some sleeping pills or slam some NyQuil and climb into the bunk. 12 hours later you are loaded, but you only have two hours left in your work day, so you drive back to the truck stop and go back to bed until you get your mandatory 10 hour break… Then you get up, if you even slept, race to the bathroom, and now have to be 400 miles down the road by noon… Would you put up with and or do this every day for $9.38 an hour?
I will not, I own my own truck, but this is what tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of drivers put up with every day out here, for less than what a kid would make at the local McDonalds.
Yes we need some relief.
And to add, we do not work under the same rules say a fry cook or attorney operates under, we are under a separate branch of government just like the Rail Roads, we are operated under a completely different authority. And those rules have been etched in stone since around 1938, not much has changed, other than these Electronic Logging Devices, that by law we are required to use. The first year I had one in my truck, I lost 30% of my NET pay, as now I sat more than I drove. I rarely go out anymore, as it is just no longer worth it.
Thank you for detailing that out. I had no idea that is what goes on for being a truck driver. I would imagine insurance and gas is very high also and maintenance for a truck. I can more easily understand where this is frustrating and maddening.

If you go over time or miss a pre determined break, the bomb blows up and you are getting flagged or in some cases fired for that one second.
Now picture being in a truck, where you have no control over traffic, construction, weather, accidents, detours, etc… Yes, frustrating beyond belief. I used to love this job, and have made fantastic money out here, up until the Bauer clock was installed in my truck… Been all downhill from there.

LOL! I quit going to CA around 2007 or so, they can starve to death for all I care… Not much left out there, most companies fled the state years ago. A real shame too, as I used to love going out there, but all of that is gone. Roads are terrible, the old truck stops are gone, the food in some places I used to go eat to die for… All gone.

So while he seems to be suggesting the problem is caused by foreign manufacturing delivery, we know there appears to be a huge backlog at the California ports. Both can’t be true. There can’t be a delay in manufacturing delivery because the ports are full. So it must be the ports aren’t operating at full capacity right?

Bit of context on the port backup, from prior life in west coast intermodal transportation.
The transpacific’s primary flow is inbound higher value manufactured items from Asia, which enter the U.S. through the ports of L.A./Long Beach and Seattle. Most of the containers then move overland throughout the U.S. When the containers are empty, many are filled with lower value export cargo – food crops, cotton, waste paper, etc. – and backhauled to the Port of Oakland where they are loaded onto ships returning Asia.
Containerships sail eastbound from Asia, dock in SoCal or Seattle and offload. Then they sail with a lot of empty slots to the SF Bay Area, load up the ag product containers, and sail westbound.
When containers become backlogged at an inbound port, more than one equipment logistics link gets broken. Empty containers are not available to load up ag exports, which can spoil. Asian manufacturers encounter container shortages; if they don’t slow production then they will run out of warehouse storage space for finished inventory.
Some import containers are loaded directly by portside crane onto railroad flatcars, but containers that need to be trucked also require a container chassis to move them on. There are far fewer container chassis than container boxes. If you slow the turnaround of container deliveries, then you tie up the chassis fleet, which in turn becomes a separate bottleneck.
