Throughout the night and today U.S. personnel were evacuated from the embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan. The U.S. flag has been removed. The airport in Kabul is no longer safe and flights have been suspended. Afghanistan President Ghani has fled the country. The Taliban are on the streets of Kabul as fighting around the airport continues.
U.S. Secretary of State Tony Blinken is a stuttering and stammering mess as he appears on television attempting to obfuscate the complete FUBAR that is unfolding. Joe Biden is being kept hidden in his bunker. U.S. personnel who did not make it to the airport have been told to shelter in place and await rescue. Some reports of negotiations with Taliban leadership for safe passage for Americans. The embassy is being abandoned.
Why the rapid collapse? “In the wake of President Biden’s withdrawal decision, the U.S. pulled its air support, intelligence and contractors servicing Afghanistan’s planes and helicopters. That meant the Afghan military simply couldn’t operate anymore. The same happened with another failed American effort, the South Vietnamese army in the 1970s, said retired Lt. Gen. Now it is a mad scramble to protect the remaining Americans and evacuate everything. The U.S. diplomatic presence in Afghanistan has been withdrawn. Remaining U.S. personnel are receiving the following instructions from the State Dept.:

The ARVN during Vietnam while weak, were able to hold off the VC and NVA, after the US military smashed them in 72. It was the fool Tony Lake, and, Sandy Berger (who also supposedly failed to tell Clinton the Chinese had stolen our top nuclear weapons designs) who convinced Congress to cut funding to the ARVN after Nixon had essentially gotten us out.
At the time the ARVN was holding steady in all of Vietnam except Quang Tree Province in the North which was always nip and tuck.

And heaven help them if any American citizens or military are harmed. As an aside, I would wager that the utter collapse of the Afghan military is of no surprise to the lowest ranks of US troops. Our foreign policy is conceived and our troops led by incompetent fools. And if fools they not be, then traitors they are.
