Throughout the night and today U.S. personnel were evacuated from the embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan. The U.S. flag has been removed. The airport in Kabul is no longer safe and flights have been suspended. Afghanistan President Ghani has fled the country. The Taliban are on the streets of Kabul as fighting around the airport continues.
U.S. Secretary of State Tony Blinken is a stuttering and stammering mess as he appears on television attempting to obfuscate the complete FUBAR that is unfolding. Joe Biden is being kept hidden in his bunker. U.S. personnel who did not make it to the airport have been told to shelter in place and await rescue. Some reports of negotiations with Taliban leadership for safe passage for Americans. The embassy is being abandoned.
Why the rapid collapse? “In the wake of President Biden’s withdrawal decision, the U.S. pulled its air support, intelligence and contractors servicing Afghanistan’s planes and helicopters. That meant the Afghan military simply couldn’t operate anymore. The same happened with another failed American effort, the South Vietnamese army in the 1970s, said retired Lt. Gen. I spent 8 years on numerous deployments to AFG. Initially we (my unit and larger command) felt like we were accomplishing the stated goal of removing terrorist cells and viable threats to the homeland from Afghanistan. In the end, I believe the single greatest military objective of killing UBL was accomplished with professionalism and a tremendous coordination of effort. At that point I believe our stated goal was complete and there was no further purpose for leaving troops in that country.
If there was a silver lining for 20 years of US presence, it should be that an entire generation of young Afghani children received education and healthcare, where none previously existed.
There is no successful history of a centralized government in Afghanistan that wasn’t propped up by Western allies. These are tribal people with no love of anyone outside their own familial tribe.
The lesson…imposing western democratic governance and freedom is impossible in Afghanistan.

MY BIL was a contractor in Afghanistan before going over to Iraq (air traffic controller) he said that
the Aghan hates us the kids used to spit at the soliders and they were told once the left the compound by vehicle they were not to stop for any reason till they got to the airport.. He said once the road was blocked and the driver drove off the road took out some ladies wash hanging on a line and kept on driving.. My BIL couldn;t wait to get out of Afghanistan…

We hear all kinds of stories about the educations that the Afghan kids received and how the lives of little girls were improved while our soldiers were there but the Afgan civilians were not as grateful as one might think.
Our soldiers were on the receiving end of lots of nasty little things and being spit on was the mildest.
Does one rationally expect anti-taliban fighters in the region to continue to fight en masse if the US has presumed them to be conquered in mere days? That telegraphs defeat like no other. Ergo, one would reasonably expect the remaining fighters to collapse into anonymity or expire in a last ditch resistance.
