Why the Concern?

“Wherefore, when we could no longer forbear, we thought it good to be left at Athens alone.
“And sent Timotheus…to establish you, and to comfort you concerning your faith.
“…when I could no longer forbear, I sent to know your faith, lest by some means the tempter have tempted you, and our labour be in vain” (1 Thes. 3:1,2,5).
According to the Acts record, the Apostle Paul had only recently spent three weeks in Thessalonica, establishing the church there. Why then was he so eager to check back with them? Twice we read that he “could no longer forbear,” and so sent Timothy to encourage and establish them, and to let him know how they were doing. Yet, as far as the record is concerned, no messenger had come to him with alarming news about the Thessalonian church. What had happened to make him so concerned about the state of their faith?
The answer is found in Acts 17:5-10. Paul had just been run out of town—their town! And he was concerned lest this humiliating treatment at the hands of the Thessalonian Jews might have shaken their faith. It is, after all, no small thing when your spiritual leader is thrown out of town!
Not that this had bothered Paul personally. He was accustomed to such violence and was not disturbed by it, as evidenced by the fact that he immediately focused his total attention on the ministry of the gospel at Berea (v. 10-12). Indeed, we have his own testimony in 1 Thessalonians 2:2 about the similar event which had brought him to Thessalonica:
“…even after that we had suffered before, and were shamefully entreated, as ye know, at Philippi, we were bold in our God to speak unto you the gospel of God with much contention.”
Yes, Paul fully realized “how great things he must suffer” for the Savior he represented (Acts 9:16),but his beloved Thessalonians could not fully realize this. His ignominious expulsion from their city had doubtless left them shaken, especially with “all the city on an uproar,” and the house of Jason assaulted merely on suspicion of harboring the fugitive apostle and his companions (Acts 17:5-9).
But there was yet another reason for his concern. These same Jews of Thessalonica, when they knew that “the Word of God was preached of Paul at Berea…came thither also, and stirred up the people” (v. 13). Paul was now safely out of their reach in Athens, but he knew they had returned to their own city, and would now doubtless redouble their persecution of the young Thessalonian church.
Little wonder the apostle lost no time in dispatching Timothy, his trusted co-worker, to their side, to assure them that
“…no man should be moved by these afflictions; for yourselves know that we are appointed thereunto.
“For verily, when we were with you, we told you before that we should suffer tribulation; even as it came to pass, and ye know” (1 Thes. 3:3,4).
How well, indeed, they had come to know this! And how they must have welcomed Timothy to their assembly, and rejoiced over the subsequent epistle from their father in the faith, who evidently cared for them so much!
Finally, Paul wanted them to understand that their afflictions came as a result of living in the dispensation of grace, and not as a result of persecution in the Tribulation, which some were affirming. It is true, says the apostle, that we are appointed to afflictions, but
“…God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ” (5:9).
It is evident from the context that the “wrath” they were not appointed to is the wrath of the Tribulation. Consider: God has not appointed us to wrath, but God has appointed us to “obtain salvation” by our Lord Jesus Christ. Since the Thessalonians were already saved, this can only refer to the completion, the fulfillment of their salvation, i.e., at the rapture of the church. Paul confirms this view by a similar statement in Romans 13:11:
“…for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.”
Furthermore, verse 8 of 1 Thessalonians 5 describes the finishing touch to our armour as “the hope of salvation.” What else could this phrase refer to but “that blessed hope” (Titus 2:13), the completion of our salvation? When we trusted Christ, we were immediately saved from the penalty of sin, and we are today being saved from the power of sin. But some day, at the rapture, we shall be saved from the very presence of sin—and it may be soon!

Strangely, Friday, July 2, my local Weiss Market and also Giant grocery stores ran out of chocolate ice cream? (I made vanilla into chocolate with choc syrup for fam) No big deal….except I realized as I continued shopping, most of the shelves were what we used to call ‘faced’ – the products were pulled up to shelf edge to give appearance of being fully stocked, but were only the front row deep or maybe second row and spread out across the front to disguise lack of stock.
we were celebrating a family member’s recent accomplishment so thought red, white, blue balloons were in order. The counter person said she had No stars, no flags, no ‘congratulations!’balloons: and it didn’t matter anyway bc they were out of helium!

Shortages of all kinds. The maoists here at home are fine tuning their oppression machine which is meant to increase the populations fear incrementally. Its more fun for them that way. Its seems the Oligarchs have any number of ways to let the average middle class American know he AIN’T wanted of needed around here any more. If you are indeed a hermit then please prepare your family to live life as our forfathers did in the 1880’s. It may not get to that point. But some lost skills will need to be revived and taught to future generations. One very important skill indeed essential in the future will be a ruthless self defense of hearth and home combined with hightened situational awareness. Tough times ahead.
I’ve been buying books from pre Google. Euell Gibbons, history, simple how-to build/fix/sew, Fox Fire, even dictionaries. I’ve been concentrating mostly on herbal lotions/medicines. Essential oils/herbs are surprisingly effective for many minor ailments. I go back to 1800s with a few books. Our kids are young adults who live at home so we have been teaching them gardening, canning, freezing as well as other skills ‘in case the lights go out.’ 10 years ago when we had to move to Eastern PA, we decided to move out of suburbs to rural area, ‘just in case.’ I never really expected my paranoia to come true. Our dogs are a great defense as are rodent killing cats. I just realized that with the current animal neutering climate, if something happens to them, it’s going to be difficult to replace them. We never have strays any more. So many old ways have been changed….
Eastern PA also. I have noticed an increase in shortages for over a month now. I often bounce between Weis and Giant, although I prefer giving my money to Weis. Last week, Claussen pickles, but lots of other items are in short supply. Not just groceries. Has a foreboding feel.
Foreboding is the word. The supply chain across just about all goods is a mess and getting worse by the day. Businesses can’t make their products (or at least not on time and/or quality) because they can’t get various components they need to do it. Quality control is out the window as workers stopped working, businesses couldn’t run efficiently and/or they were forced to hired unqualified people. As you said: foreboding. Indeed. Surreal as well.

Now my family is grown, they go more often than I do so it was shocking to see how much we don’t have on shelves. It’s almost time to hopefully buy from local farmers. We’ve been buying meats from local farms/farm markets last couple years. I prefer Weiss too! Giant lied when I called about where their products come from so I’ve been trying to stay away.
I can’t believe even peppermint tea is from China. Mint is a weed!

Fretting means getting out at elbows mentally or spiritually. It is one thing to say “Fret not,” but a very different thing to have such a disposition that you find yourself able not to fret. It sounds so easy to talk about “resting in the Lord” and “waiting patiently for Him” until the nest is upset – until we live, as so many are doing, in tumult and anguish, is it possible then to rest in the Lord? If this “don’t” does not work there, it will work nowhere. This “don’t” must work in days of perplexity as well as in days of peace, or it never will work. And if it will not work in your particular case, it will not work in anyone else’s case. Resting in the Lord does not depend on external circumstances at all, but on your relationship to God Himself.
Fussing always ends in sin. We imagine that a little anxiety and worry are an indication of how really wise we are; it is much more an indication of how really wicked we are. Fretting springs from a determination to get our own way. Our Lord never worried and He was never anxious, because He was not “out” to realize His own ideas; He was “out” to realize God’s ideas. Fretting is wicked if you are a child of God.
Have you been bolstering up that stupid soul of yours with the idea that your circumstances are too much for God? Put all “supposing” on one side and dwell in the shadow of the Almighty. Deliberately tell God that you will not fret about that thing. All our fret and worry is caused by calculating without God.

PRAYING ON THE ARMOR OF GOD
Father God, I now follow your command to put on the full armor of God, because my battle is not against flesh and blood but against rulers, authorities, the powers of this dark world and against spiritual forces of evil in the unseen world.
I first pray on the Belt of Truth that it may be buckled around my waist, may I be centered and encircled by your truth dear Lord. Hem me inside all that is true and right, and may I be protected and held up by the truth of your living word, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Breastplate of righteousness, please protect my vital organs and my inner man, cover my integrity, my spirit, and my soul. Guard my heart for it is the wellspring of life, please strengthen and guard the most vulnerable places in my life with that which is right, good, and noble that I might not receive a fatal blow from the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
I pray on the Gospel Shoes of Peace. I choose to stand in the shoes of your good news, and on the firm foundation of my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, the solid eternal rock. All other ground is sinking sand, I pray that I will not slip or fall, but that my feet would be firmly fitted on your lordship, my Lord Jesus. I pray on the Helmet of Salvation, that you might protect my mind from the thoughts that can lead me astray. I choose to take every thought captive, and arrest all intentioned ideas and motives that would harm others, or distract me from your holy will for me. I submit every captured thought to the Lordship of my Lord Jesus Christ, and ask that you would imprison those thoughts that are not of you my Lord. Transform my mind and renew my thinking that I may think God thoughts, and have a sober mind that is focused on your glory. Please protect me from being double minded that I may allow my mind, I reject to live an earthly life, because I choose to live a holy one, governed by you My Lord Jesus, the prince of peace, please have my mind to be saturated with the holy mind of Christ, in my Lord Jesus name.
Finally, I take up the Sword of the Spirit which is the holy word of God, I pray this powerful offensive weapon into my hand, and ask that your holy word would be fitting for every encounter I face. As the enemy gets close to me, please give me the insight, wisdom, and skill to wield the word of God to drive away the enemy, in my Lord Jesus name.
May the enemy and his team flee from me, upon hearing the word of God spoken by the power and direction of the Holy Spirit. Give me the sword of the spirit to cut through the wiles of the devil, so that I may discern the schemes of the enemy when he is near.
With all kinds of prayers, supplication, and intercession I pray to you my Lord God as the one who fights my battles. Now that I’m in your holy powerful armor, I walk away covered and ready to face my day as you go before me, and please protect me in the midst of the spiritual warfare in this unseen world, in my Lord Jesus name.
Thank you my Lord, for the spiritual weapons of armor and prayer that you have given me. It is written no weapon formed against me shall prosper, and you will refute every tongue that accuses me.
Thank you Father God, my Lord Jesus and the Holy Spirit, that I am more than a conqueror in my Lord Jesus. I pray all of this in the mighty name of my Lord God and Savior Jesus Christ, amen.
